If you play the campaign in co op, everyone can pick who they want to play as except the host, who has to play as Locke or chief. I can understand this in single player but why in co op? Is there any specific reason?
343 always wants someone to be Chief or Locke because they are the main characters and experiencing the game through them is vital to how they believe Halo 5 is meant to be played.
so that the host is the center of the story experience. simple as that.

Pretty much this.

I guess, but it still kinda sucks
Why someone will don’t like to play as the Chief / Locke? they are like the most badass characters of the game and the center of the teams.

I believe Buck might have something to say about that…

Lol
I know it is a bit offtopic but… do we know the order the characters will be playable in?
I mean, something like:
HOST — Master Chief/Locke
2nd player — Fred?/Buck?
3rd and 4th players?
But yeah, I do think it makes sense to have the first player be the leader of each team, in fact, I do think it makes it more immersive.

Players 2-4 get a choice at the beginning of the mission, or from any remaining characters if they drop in. It’s only Player 1 that doesn’t get a choice.
I think it has something to do with the drop in and drop out, because if everyone drops out then there has to be someone playing as the chief, and since the host is the only person that can’t drop out, unless they want to stop the coop session, he has to play as Chief/Locke.
One additional reason I can think of is also so they didn’t have to program the AI to do the button pressing (and similar things) that the player usually does. It might seem like a small thing, but it would actually add a lot of work for them. Not to mention you then have to figure out when the AI should press the button to trigger a cut scene, or advance the level and so on.
Also, Chief/Locke are the leaders (yes I know all about Fred), which give out squad commands in the game. So it wouldn’t really make sense for Tanaka, for example, to give out orders to the Chief AI.
