I’ve recently noticed that the reason to why I’m doing so extraordinary good with the Carbine is host advantage.
I’ve noticed that I usually pull host 10 out of 11 games. When I don’t pull host, my Carbine suddenly needs 2+ shots to kill with, the players that use the AR have 2x the range, slight delay in grenade throws and my boltshot hardly registers.
Have you had any experience with Halo 4’s host advantage?
Please be sure to not discuss dedicated servers in this thread, since there is already a thread that is dedicated to them.
I must say I have not noticed it to the degree that I do in the cod games. In those games its rare for someone who isnt host to win. Except of course blops II with its crazy lag compensation. Perhaps with halo because there is a skill gap aswell as a connection gap it isnt as noticeable…for example a good player with a bad connection can still beat a bad player.with host…?
My experience with host advantage is that everyone else can survive a headshot or 2 without shields, but I can’t. Maybe my Lightrifle is just incapable of headshots, I don’t know.
Edit: Oh and also that Plasma grenades are sentient, and are capable of jumping off their former masters dead body to avenge them.
Host and strong connections ever had advantage in Halo, now in H4 with fast killtimes isnt advantage, is a shame.
The advantage isnt only with carbine, is with all weapons, nades, shields, Autoaim/Magnetism… In H4 connection>skill
I’m not fussy, earlier today I managed to find a lobby with an Irish host, and the game played fine. I live In England, so there is still a fair distance between me and the host’s xbox. However, in true Halo fashion that doesn’t last long before we get put in with an American host. This happens so often, and it isn’t even worth my time or effort to try and play this game when it sets the ultimatum of ‘America, or -Yoink-’.
I’m not an amazing player, but I know I am better than most casuals. But I never ever get host, and some players who have no right in beating me are beating me just because I need to fire an extra 2-3 shots to ensure a kill.
I’ve been playing a lot of Halo 3 recently, and because the game has such a small population I’m being paired against Americans all the time. The lag in Halo 3 is similar to the lag in Halo 4. But I can enjoy playing Halo 3, regardless of lag. I can’t say the same for Halo 4.
Edit: I’m English, and at-least 90% of my games are hosted by overseas players. Usually Americans.
Host selection in this game is a joke - I’m in England with a good connection but I and my mates never pull host. More often then not matchmaking will try and put us into a game hosted in germany, france of the USA and it normally ends badly for us.
An even bigger joke is paying for the privilege of P2P matchmaking and I swear to God that it s getting worse - the game was alright when the servers worked for the first week or so - most of the time I can’t be bothered to put the disk in the xbox.
I’ve got host in matchmaking maybe once or twice in Halo 4 and that’s not because I have bad internet. I have one of the highest non-corporate uplinks you can get - ADSL2+ and I live in Australia. Because I have such a low local player base I am linked up with people more than half the worlds distance away and I’m delayed by 2-5 seconds at a time. I’m a good player and I compete in ACL (that’s the equivalent of AGL or more or less MLG in Australia/New Zealand), yet I stand hardly any of a chance against casuals that can’t even aim at a rapid target but can kill me within a second even after missing shots extensively.
Being handicapped like this is ridiculous and unfair. Host advantage like you have is more than likely because you are in a location with renown fiber optic uplink whereas my country is still using copper wiring that is expected to be replaced by 2014. Until then with low population like this Australians like me and many others are experiencing lob sided matches where the connection is so bad that we can’t even play the game properly so we just quit.
Another Brit here - I find host will also usually be gotten by Americans, but it doesn’t often bother me all too much. The major differences I can find are that bullet magnetism becomes less prominent (if I am not aiming at the target’s head, but magnetism would give me a headshot on a LAN connection, an American host will deny me the headshot), and if I start shooting the same time as someone else, I will likely lose. Just means I’ve got to up my game with both shot and awareness.
I do see those games with .5 to 2 second delays, but those are thankfully reasonably rare. Also, when I do pull host, that magnetism becomes silly.
Actually, that might explain why even on non-laggy games, I sometimes get killed by two BR shots, or whatever, when I have full shields and start firing at the same time they do.
I think what may be happening is that the player shooting is host, and that the game is ‘behind’ a shot on my XBOX, so I think it is only two, but it is three to the host machine.
I know your pain. I live in rural NSW and we don’t even have adsl-2 here yet. The low population in the playlists due to our time zone only worsens it too.
Why I can say I’m quite used to the lag now, its certainly a pain when someone outside of the Aus/NZ area joins and gets host because it becomes near impossible to even see them without instantly dropping.
Not much I can do with complaining though, just keep wishing I didn’t live in the middle of the bush.
I pulled host every single game with a new xbox for 2 weeks, now I pull host 1 of every 100 games. It’s so lame. I have great internet too… I honestly think host is 100% based on who has the xbox with the least games on it and 0% on internet connection.

Just played first game of the day, host was so horrific that nobody could even spawn. I was black screen for about 2 mins then by the time it gets to the screen its 4-0 the other team with the host running around killing people that aren;t moving on his dial up connection. Such a joke.
I feel like there are many small but significant items/ideas/things that 343i just ignored/forgot that the other halo games had. One of those things is localization… that’s just one, since we are talking about hosting. Hosts from another country are never an enjoyable experience in my opinion. Being able to localize and pick “good connection” was always a bonus in my eyes. I don’t want to spend 5 minutes in a black screen waiting for a new host or for it to migrate hosts. Does anyone know why we still run on a P2P system???

Yeah mate, I know what you mean. I live in the bush too. The lag probs have got to the stage where I am just about ready to give up on halo 4. I enjoy the game, but the lag disadvantage makes the game almost unplayable.
