Horrible matchmaking spread

I am a consistent Diamond player. I usually hover around Diamond 3 to Diamond 6. My K/D is pretty average; I have good games and bad games. I find myself being matched with Onyx and Champion very frequently and it’s frustrating because I cannot keep up and I believe my K/D is not reflective of my true skill level. Usually I am on the lower ranked team with Diamonds and Platinums (and maybe an Onyx if I’m lucky) and I get wrecked by the opposing team, which is usually 1-2 Onyx players and occasionally a Champion. I was matched with the following team today:

Champion
Champion
Onyx
Diamond 4 (me)

vs.

Onyx
Diamond 3
Platinum 4
Platinum 5

Fortunately I was on the winning team, but even a game like this is not fun as the other players are basically taking every kill and I get very little increase in CSR since my team was so high and the other team was so low. My question is, why is the matchmaking so uneven? I understand that you would need to be matched with higher ranked players to increase your ranking. But why is it so hard (or why is not set up this way) to match games with players within the same rank? There’s 6 tiers in each rank, so wouldn’t it be more competitive to play against players within the same rank?

Edit: my matchmaking preference is set fo Focused, but changing to Balanced or Expanded does not offer much difference.

KD doesn’t mean much for some of the reasons you mentioned…it depends on who you play and who’s on your team.

As for uneven matches…it’s a population issue. You’re probably more likely to get more even matches if you play at peak times (evenings US time zones).

If I’m not mistaken, you don’t necessarily need to play against better players to rank up…you just need to keep improving your expected KPM (changes based on level of opponents).

In the game that you described: while your teammates took most of the kills, the system probably expected them to do so therefore predicting your contribution to be fairly low. I’m not certain, but I don’t think your MMR would be penalized for that.
