One thing I really hope Halo 4 does better than Reach is smart friendly AI, assuming it has AI friendlies. The AI in Reach is dumb as a box of rocks. Kat, in particular, seems to be a bigger threat to me if she drives vehicle than the enemy.
The friendly AI in all Halo games are mentally limited. Even a small improvement will be a welcome change.
The A.I is actually quite good, it just can’t understand the full dangers of the overall area, plus the vehicles they drive aren’t designed for their movement.
Agreed, I hope the friendly AI gets stepped up quite a bit this time around.
Since alot of things are being copied/pasted from Reach… Maybe they can Copy Halo 2’s AI coding. Best AI in all Halo games.
This is something Bungie struggled with since post-Halo CE. 343 can’t overlook this
I heard Bungie deliberately dumbed down friendly AI so that players couldn’t sit back and wait for teammates to clean up. Just comparing the firing rate of enemy AI to friendly AI in Reach is good evidence to support the theory.
Perhaps instead of dumbing down friendly AI, enemies should keep spawning until the player kills a certain number or deal a certain amount of damage by themselves. That way immersion won’t be broken with dumb AI antics and gameplay overall will be more fun since there will be a basic semblance of teamwork with the AI.
Yeah I want to have NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! moments when soldier dies. In Reach/3 I just killed them because they were more harm than good.
I hope so as well.
Im not too concerned about the friendly AI, I want enemy AIs…as in I WANT BOTS for use in custom games. Ive been waiting for a Halo game to employ some type of bots for awhile now. They’re kind of in Reach if you set up a custom Firefight correctly but it just doesn’t work to well…
As long as they are not as bad as Kat in Reach or Sgt. Buck in ODST, I’m good.
Halo reach may aswell drive yourself of cliff edge if you let kat in the drivers seat.
Spartans in Reach ultimate warriors worst drivers
I hope that AI is really Smart and Hard …
I like a challenge when the game is on , HARD---- IT SHOULD BE HARD !!!
> The friendly AI in all Halo games are mentally limited. Even a small improvement will be a welcome change.
No way. The AI in Halo 3 was much better than in Halo: Reach. For some reason they took a step backwards in Reach.
In Reach Bungie clearly tried to tone down Marine/Trooper AI so they werent as effective with weaponry. Giving a rocket launcher or sniper (or something heavy) to a Trooper in Reach doesn’t really do a great deal, as they fire very very slowly and the damage seems to have been reduced a lot. Troopers die a lot because they just don’t fight very well.
H2 and H3 Marines were beastly as they fired fast and their weapons hit with full damage… so a Marine with a Laser or Rocket Launcher was a genuine asset. The Troopers in Reach just aren’t very effective at all.
Hoping for some better Marine AI in H4.
I think if they made certain ranks smarter than others would be cool like a odst would be better than a marine. The enemies in Reach sort of had this like the zealots could judge combat really well and retreat when neccesary and team up and engage the player when there shields were down.
It’s because they wanted it to feel like you didn’t have much hope of winning in Reach, because it’s a sad event in the Halo history. If you had friendly AI’s like in Halo 2 then the campaign of Halo Reach would’ve been to easy. I do want smarter AI in Halo 4 though, in Halo Reach I didn’t care much about them. While in Halo 2 and 3 I would revert to checkpoint if one of them had died.
Now I have to think about the awesome moments I had on Uprising with those epic friendly Elites, they just destroyed the Brutes. I always just followed Goldie (The Zealot with the Energy Sword) just to see him blasting his way through all the Brutes and Jackhals. ^^
> It’s because they wanted it to feel like you didn’t have much hope of winning in Reach, because it’s a sad event in the Halo history.
It’s because Bungie changed for the worst.
For example, their formula for enemy AI since H3 has been:
> more health = tougher = they last longer to show more of their capability = smarter
This is simply untrue. Players will eventually notice that the AI are nothing but bullet sponges. Giving them more health does not at all make them any smarter.
> Enemies get more aggressive the longer player is in view = improvement
I disagree. Enemies should also be showing frustration and perhaps fear. The more aggression will result in a more robot enemy a.k.a I don’t care about my life or my buddies as long as I kill that son of a -Yoink- right in front of me.
In H2, to compensate for the recharging shield, they upped the damage. This renders realistic numbers moot because it’s nearly impossible to survive them. Hence, we get room to room encounters, waves, kill-stealing friendly AI, and other factors that take away the fun and challenge.
> AI should focus on the player to keep the player feeling like he’s really there.
This is quite noticeable in 3 way battles and it even exists in CE to a certain extent. The problem is, the other enemy is clearly a greater threat. In other words, AI lack prioritization, other than on the player. So how is this bad? When you have an entire team distracting the enemy and you stick your head out for a moment and immediately get the enemy’s attention, that’s just ridiculous. When there’s an army of Flood and you’re charging after the wrong guy while letting them beat you to death, that’s just sad.
Also, ever since H2, there’s really no leadership role for the player. The AI charge and drive off on their own in most cases. They don’t wait for me to take out the gunners or snipers.
Nowadays, I really do regard Halo AI as mere robots. There’s nothing living and breathing inside of them. When I play CE however, I don’t kill the AI as soon as I spot them. I let them carry out their patrol, sleeping, panicking, etc. I also strive to secure marines.
Bungie really screwed up with Reach, intentionally making the friendly AI sluggish, have poor rof, accuracy, range, and health, and making them not worth saving at all. While they took the “soul” out of the enemy AI, making them brutal, angry, often independent, and ridiculously unresponsive (I thought reducing my melee damage in Firefight would make it so when I melee a Grunt, I’d get him flinching. It turns out it just makes them get pushed back with no reaction at all). Both AI are worthless imho.
Friendly AIs have always been dumb. But I do hope they make them smarter.
