One of the things that disappointed me in Reach was the way the story was handled. The groundwork was there for an emotional and epic story of the demise of a planet, yet it failed to do that. I think the characters in the game had a lot to do with that, they lacked depth, emotion and likeability, you just didn’t care when each one of them died. Halo 4 has the best characters in Halo back, so let’s hope the story is better this time.
To be fair, characters like the Master Chief have had far more “screen time” in which to be developed (even if they haven’t been); there is simply no way that Bungie could have manufactured attachments to the characters in Reach within the span of a single game.
I dunno. I felt sad when Jorge sacrificed himself, and same for Carter. Kat’s death was a genuine surprise, and I personally mourned for Noble 6 when he/she fought to until his/her last breathe.
The only death I didn’t actually have an emotional attachment to was Emile, but this was due to the nature of his character. We were never supposed to be emotionally attached to Emile, and he went out like a Badass.

Therefore, Bungie created too many Spartans for us to follow for an 8-hour campaign. Still Bungie’s fault.

I felt more emotionally attached to Emile than I ever did to Kat or Carter. Jorge’s sacrifice was really what touched me the most though, it’s a shame that it wasn’t like that for every character in the game.
I actually felt more connected with the character in Reach than I did with any of the other characters in Halo, well if you only look at the other Halo games standing solo anyway. I think the only reason why people claim that they’re more connected with characters from the trilogy and such is because those characters have been around far longer than any of Noble Team. However looking at each game individually, the characters in Reach are just as, if not more, deep than the characters in any of the other games. ODST and Reach are the two games with the deepest characters for a single game in the Halo series if you ask me.

ODST I’ll agree with, but Reach’s characters were not as fleshed out as the trilogy’s–this is a quantifiable fact, not an opinion. The amount of time spent on character development in Reach was far, far too little, if at all. This is, of course, likely because the trilogy naturally had more time to talk about the characters then 1 game where the campaign wasn’t the focus anyway.
That said, I hardly think you can say that you find Reach’s characters to be more in depth then the trilogy’s. I just fail to see how that’s possible.
Well, I think with MC you had THREE campaigns to get to know him and watch him grow…Noble 6 had Reach. And for a one game shot, I’d say they did a pretty good job at giving Noble Team character development and personalities.
It all comes down to opinion, and that’s it. Halo CE to 3 I felt more of a connection with the supporting cast for a reason, Master Chief was a faceless, lived through everything, super soldier. While a badass with luck on his side, he wasn’t the deepest character ever created. You worried about Cortana, you felt bad for Johnson, hell the terminal in CEA of Keyes was just SAD. Then you have ODST and you actually care about these characters that you’re playing as. When Dutch drives the Hog (or Ghost whichever you were in) off the edge and lands it, I couldn’t help but laugh, when Romeo gets hit with that Hammer I had an “OH -Yoink-” moment. I’m not saying I didn’t have these moments with Chief, it’s just I knew I was going to make it through because I was playing as indestructible soldier with no worries except to save my virtual girlfriend.
Reach is released and I understand there is hate, your opinion fine, but the fact they made the Covenant “scary” again played a big role for me, it seemed like in the trilogy they had started to make the Covenant more of a joke than a threat. I love to hate the Covies. They should be hated, when you kill them you should feel a sense of accomplishment that you just put down one or a dozen of a species trying to wipe you from the Universe. With Reach I think almost everyone felt some kind of connection with Jorge, he was like your big buddy, if you go back and play through the first couple of levels he’s almost by your side every mission. When he practically throws you from the Covenant cruiser I was like “Daaaaaaamn you, you big ol’ badass” then the game picks up after that and you’re like well he did that for no damn reason. I honestly didn’t see Kat dying like that, it was a TOTAL surprise to me, I mean I assumed everyone was going to die, but that is one death I just didn’t see coming. Carter’s death, like Jorge’s was heroic and while I didn’t like him too much (just me personally I didn’t like him) I felt like saying “Thanks” when he crashed that Pelican into the Scarab to help. Emile’s death was the only one I was actually waiting for. I hated that guy. I don’t know why I hated him, maybe it was because everyone was talking about how badass he was because he scratched a skull into his visor, if he was a real bad -Yoink- he would have carved a Bullseye into his visor and told the covies to “SHOOT HERE” but whatever. The way he went out was cool, I’ll admit it, the fact he takes an energy sword to the gut and still turns around and takes the Elite with him was awesome. Then you have Noble 6, those last few seconds while he/she is fighting off the swarms of Covenant by him/herself is just NOBLE you could have left with Keyes but no you stay behind and protect the PoA just so they can get off planet.
I love the Halo games, I love the expanded universe, I love Halo, but I’m not a big Master Chief fan. Is that wrong? No, just means I didn’t care about him, I like the other characters and the story more. Hopefully Halo 4 can change that. But it is MY HUMBLE OPINION that Reach and ODST had some of the best characters, and stories in the Halo games. I still think Combat Evolved is the BEST Halo story but I’m a bit biased as that’s the game that started it all for me.
Although I didn’t think much of Reach campaign, it served it’s purpose and did what it was supposed to do. That was to explain the fall of Reach, and it did that well. Not as spontaneous as the previous trilogy imo, but it wasn’t supposed to be similar.

Play the game, have common sense. Its possible. Quantifiable fact? Lol… No.

interesting wall of text there bro.
No really, I agree with you.

Yeah, maybe I get a bit out of hand, but I love Halo. Call me a fanboy, but I fell in love with this game almost 11 years ago, and as much as I like the original trilogy, and I can understand some people’s complaints about Reach, I still love the story, I love the characters in this Universe, and I like the WHOLE UNIVERSE as a whole. It’s so rich with story and characters. TO ME it’s like the Star Wars of this generation. I’m a fan of Star Wars, but for kids now-a-days who never got to go out and camp out the theaters they now have the chance to go camp out game stores for the most recent Halo. Whatever magic Star Wars has with people, I believe Halo has that same magic.
