So for those that are unaware, I am fairly confident the recent Halo Infinite flight used skill based matchmaking (sbmm) to determine your teammates Vs the bots. I am making an assumption this must have been fairly strict as all weekend I found myself seeing a number of players again and again. Looking at a few of their service records I have determined they were Onyx or Champion level players. The pro players were matched with other pro players during PVP as well, amongst other H5 onyx/champion players.
I can tell this was the case as I was generally the bottom of the table most games in kills, or they were split fairly equally. However, when I played with my friend who is a Gold player, I was routinely top of the table with 25-30 kills so it is clear our teammates here were not Onyx-Champion level and it meant I was clearing up most of the kills instead.
Hopefully this was done as part of the bot tests, and so PVP could be worked out on a fairer level. I really hope this was the ranked system being used and tested and not a snapshot of what the future of social looks like. Playing Halo 5, I end up seeing the same players in ranked competitive and in social quickplay, we can’t get away from each other! In the last two days I’ve played one guy in three different playlists, social and ranked.
Sometimes it is good to switch it up and have games where you get brutally stomped in order to have games where you can feel like a pro and go huge yourself. The tighter the matchmaking, the less likely that is to happen. I’m slightly worried now that Halo Infinite will be a great game, but I’ll be boxed into competitive because social is just competitive without the reward. On the other side of the coin, I have a great time playing MCC social because the games feel far more relaxed and I don’t have to put my game face on to not totally screw over my teammates! I think it is harder to create a fun casual experience with Trueskill2 at work, but maybe there is data to suggest I’m wrong. Close games are great, but I think that’s reserved for Ranked. In social games anything should be possible, maybe you will go 2-20 or maybe you’ll be the one going 20-2, please don’t take that away from people to aim for a 1.0k/d, 50/50 win loss system.
Hopefully the game uses MCC system for social and Halo 5 system for competitive.
Its a new game everyone and my assumption is that most of the players in the flights are better than average players overall… This game is going to be ftp so on launch Im guessing the players that feel like they can’t compete will steamroll other players at launch.
I’m pretty sure the matchmaking in the flight was made less strict on purpose for the sake of faster matchmaking. It sucks to say, but 343 is understandably looking for raw data more than fair matchmaking right now. Remember: Heatmaps were a thing all the way back in Halo 3 in 2007, and 343 can likely track even more stats now. Probably even down to how often and quickly the average player burst fires the AR on each map, and where they do it on each map.

This was a topic I made following the first flight. Not sure why or how it was bumped as is months old.
In the original flight bot arena I was constantly playing with the same players against the bots.
During this flight I didn’t play too many games but in PvP I did have to play the same Team Arena Champion 1 player and his friend twice. I have no clear opinion on how tight the sbmm is in this flight as I didn’t play enough.

PvP matchmaking felt basically the same as the time it was up for a couple hours in the first flight. It’s interesting how someone found such an old thread. I only posted because it was on the top page when I saw it.
