Honestly surprised how many people are mixed on Infinite's open world

I beat that mining Brute the first time by spamming Grapple EMP slam and stun locking him, and used an Energy Sword to kill him. I skipped his boss fight in LASO by jumping into the laser and going through it.

The first mission was BY FAR the most miserable part of Legendary and LASO. At least in LASO I could spam infinite shock grenades because wow that is how hard LASO typically is. Once you get the shield and ability upgrades, and infinite rockets and the duelist sword, you’re set for the rest of the game

I don’t think this counts as replayability. That took me like 4 hours to collect all the stuff since I used a Wasp. Replayability would be like how I enjoy playing 3 and Reach campaigns over and over and over and over, and don’t get tired of it. I would never want to play Infinite’s campaign a 5th time after Normal, Hard, Legendary, and LASO. I would never want to recollect all those items again. I would never want to hike across the mountains again and recollect the FOBs. So glad 343 let almost everything you unlocked transfer between difficulty saves.

I’m concerned how DLC will work, if we have to start over collecting FOBs in a new region, or will I just have my Wasp and fly everywhere, making the whole open world pointless?

I find the replayability discussion interesting - I’m on my third play through - first Normal, for the story and audio logs, took like 40ish hrs to get every single thing minus one skull, second play through was on Easy to get the last skull that I missed in the Normal run (stupid Bandana, in the Silent Auditorium), and now my Legendary run, doing all FOBs, comms towers, and outposts.

I think Infinite is really the first Halo game where you get exactly as much playability out of it as you’re willing to find. I enjoy the raw gameplay, so the encounters with the Marine squads, the FOBs, outposts, etc are all worthwhile, and so it keeps me playing as I increase difficulty. But, if you’re looking to keep playing for “set piece” moments, I can understand why one could find Infinite lacking.

I don’t think you need to spoiler the skull location, since the map details all the collectables per area and in each mission. It shows how many items and what items are in the mission when you highlight it, and when you’re in the mission, the bottom left of the screen will show a 0/1 data pad or skull if it is in that load zone room.

I don’t get the set piece argument. Lots of people say the game lacks them and it’s not like the previous games but I feel this game has a lot of epic moments.

it just depends on what kind of gamer you are.

If you want a game Infinite is more of that.

If you want a movie older Halo’s are more your style.

Agreed, probably not necessary, but it’s an easy thing to do to prevent someone from getting upset with me lol

I kind of do - we didn’t really see a lot of big things like the warthog runs from Halos 1 and 3, Scarab battles from Halo 3, the immensity of High Charity from Halo 2, etc. That being said, I’m not part of the group that is upset that Infinite has a smaller scale.

I thought the open world was fun to traverse at first but ultimately thought it got SUPER repetitive and, in the end, just called in vehicles to go anywhere.

This would be a HUGE ask, but it would have been awesome to play a full campaign like was found in previous Halo installments, and have it drop you in the big open world to explore after beating the game, and then build DLC off of it.

Back in the concept art, there were no FOBs, and it showed concepts of Pelicans just bringing a vehicle like a Warthog to you, wherever you were, just like Pelicans do in CE, 3 and Reach. They come TO YOU. Open world works in Destiny because you can summon a Sparrow to drive almost everywhere. FOBs were one of the crippling points of Infinite’s Campaign. At least let us summon a Mongoose anywhere.

Also we can clone enemy weapons for FOBs, but not enemy vehicles and boss vehicles? Come on 343. That one time Spartan Killer custom Chopper was a waste.

Good point. They should’ve done that.

They should skip the FOBs in future content and just add it to the menu. Let’s be honest, Chief’s comms work just fine, he can call BroHammer from anywhere.

They talk to the Pilot all the time. Why can’t they request a weapon or vehicle anywhere?

This would be a nice QoL change. Vehicles and/or ordnance pods would be nice.

Edit: Marines too. Getting ready to assault a stronghold? Drop in some buddies, weapons, and a vehicle.

You know who added the Grunt propaganda Towers ?

Joseph Staten. They weren’t even in the game aside from being an object with a mechanical noise. He is the one who got that feature with dialogue Added.

It took OG Joseph Staten from Bungie to get that feature in the game

People don’t have mixed feelings about the Open World.

They have mixed feelings about HOW the Open World was implemented in Infinite.

Most of the outdoor sections were broadly speaking, copy and paste of Rocks, Grass, Pine Trees and Hexagons bleeding into the lansldwcape like Minecraft blocks.

I want an Open World Halo, but something with a little bit of Variety in the landscape that doesn’t have Islands that are floating chunks of Hexagon Pillars that look bad from 800+ feet away.

The FOB’s are boring because they are mostly just simple Platforms than actual “Bases”.

The UNSC has been on Zeta Halo for awhile so it would be nice to have had actual UNSC base units like the ones from Halo Wars, Albeit with the Art Style needed for Infinite.

They couldn’t had a UNSC Base “Factory” or bay that deploys APC’s The Double Barrel Tanks and other vehicles from Halo Wars instead of just the SAME vehicles from previous games.

Agreed. I think they could be done away with completely in new content

Infinite’s open world was a good idea, but 343 just doesn’t have the writers who can bring it to life properly.

On the environments, I expect if they’re treating the campaign as part of the live service aspect of the game, that there will be further environments. My assumption would be that they would try and keep the terrain/biomes/environments cohesive for where you are in the story, and the base story area just didn’t allow for that variation. That being remedied does hinge on the campaign being part of the “update/add content over time” thing though.

But on the hex pillars, I really don’t find them that bad looking. Ultra settings are stupid heavy, but I find that the extra touches of shading make them less monotonous than they otherwise could be. Though I do wish we had DLSS so we could get away from the blurriness induced by the TAA solution.

You weren’t bothered by the lack of Biomes because you probably don’t have an eye for detail.

Creatives and designers with high standards for Art/Media/Games/novels know what I’m Talking about.

Hopefully this game gets the No Man’s Sky fix up and adds in some good DLC and environment variety.

The Look, look, lighting and geometry of the Forerunner levels was near perfection, and the Brute Architecture and bases were good, although the level design and pathing in the Brute ships could be more like Quake/Doom or the Ships from Warframe to encourage exploration.

The Outdoor sections need foliage affected by Wind, it needs rain, full mountains with snow ( at least for the skybox ), the Ring textures need a SERIOUS upgrade as they look worse than the Ring from Reach, and the floating Islands need more in the middle and bottom of the structure than just Hexagon Pillars top to bottom.

And the Rocks/rock mountains need color variety. They all look like a similar Gray Rock color like Concrete rather than natural rocks which are Dark Brown, Light Brown, Gray, With White streaks and rain Marks etcccc

The Color Palette also needs to have better color balance. The Key Art of the Biome from the concept art shows deep green grass, less obnoxious use of Hexagon Pillars, properly spaced environ assets, proper thick/puffy Clouds obscuring the Ring in the Distance, a Deep Blue glow of the atmosphere to provide contrast and Vaper/Fog that would help add depth and texture to the atmosphere and illustrate the atmospheric leakage from the ring Damage
