HLG and trick jumping?

It’s pretty commonly known that in Halo 3 there was a lot of different spots you could jump from/places you could hide such as the doorway above S2 on Guardian and the G1 to G2 jumps. In Halo Reach these aspects of the game were removed and the soft kill/kill barriers were put in place to prevent any such spots being manipulated. Of course people still found a few ways around this and even found glitches like being under Powerhouse but to be honest I would actually like to see the return of the Halo 3 styled HLG spots but predominantly trick jumps which were used on less experienced players to gain even more advantages and arguably increase the skill gap which many would argue had diminished mildly in Reach.

Though it’s unlikely, I think the return of such spots would appeal to a whole range of players for kids who find videos of these trick jumps on youtube and show their friends potentially impressing them, to the hardcore try-hard who wants to exploit any advantage to win.
I’m also sure that it’s too far through the game’s development for these to be implemented if they haven’t already been, but it would also bring back some of the silliness that Halo has had since Halo 2 with all of the super jumps and the out of map glitches which were (though unfairly) exploited for hours of fun.

I’d like to know if everybody agrees with me on this as it’s something I missed a lot in my time playing Reach and enjoyed immensely in my time playing the earlier Halo titles.

TL:DR Your thoughts on trick jumping and HLG spots.

I agree and have done much of these myself, but people would abuse them. They would spawn and go there and stay there the whole game, it got quite annoying… imo.

Indeed, the HLG spots were quite annoying but I honestly would like the trick jumps to come back.

I love them, although as mentioned before people will abuse these places.

fun, but hardly a concern at this point.

there are more important things at hand…

there will always be glitches, hiding spots and whatnot for curious players to discover…

…and this is a GOOD thing, and it is a good reason to have an open BETA, but forget that…

as long as they fix the jump height, which it seems they have, the trick jumping community will return.

i agree though that we have bigger issues that affect balance of gameplay.

Trick jumping? Sure! It must come back.
HLG? No thanks.

> What’s the point in having trick jumps when JP is in the game?

Because forcing players to use JP to play efficiently is a terrible idea.

Trick jumps are something that was seriously lacking in Reach. It was the lack of good geometry and map design. Trick jumps make maps more interesting when you get to know the maps, they add depth to the gameplay and make maps behave differently in high level play versus low level play. A well designed map with lots of shortcuts and jumps can make the map super fun to play even if it otherwise wasn’t very special. The gameplay should also support trick jumping. Reach made lots of stuff such as slide jumps harder, the geometry less optimal for jumping and lots of other things that were pretty much the death of high level trick jumping (the impractical type seen in montages).

What comes to HLG. Well, I must admit that looking for those spots and learning to get to them is fun. And, technically, using them in matchmaking is pretty fun too if you can live with the fact that you’re a total jerk. Unfortunately, a lot of people could live with said fact. So, as much as I like searching hiding spots or trying to get into ones I know, hiding should be discouraged. However, this should not be done through kill boundaries like Reach did, but through invisible walls. Soft kill boundaries are just irritating and they produce lazy map design where you are sometimes walking in the open and suddenly, without a notice, get a ten second countdown. I’d rather collide into an invisible wall than being told to get out. Anyhow, that’s whole another subject, but I say “Yes for trick jumping, no for hiding”.

Just dont want kill barriers in forge/custom games. I think 343i needs to add them just to matchmaking that way it’s actually possible to get out of levels. In the trilogy and ODST getting out of the map was something cool and showing your friends and in Reach it was “O hurry 10 second timer” and you find a 3x3 block to stand on to be safe. Same with campaign it took out replayablity.

As for HLG i dont really care I look up the spots and find them any ways. I thought it was pathetic how people were mad they couldnt find people behind the pallets or breakable door on high ground. Hiding has helped me win 1v4’s when the other team whores power weapons and vehicles.
