Hitscan or projectile? 343 help!

I need an official answer from someone at 343 that helped develop the aiming system.

Do I need to lead shots at long range with the BR or is it simply hitscan? (Point and shoot.)

This has been an argument for weeks now and nobody has a clear answer.

Is there bullet drop? Projectile speed? Or is it hitscan?

I need an official answer!!!

Not 343, but from my experience it’s leading the shots.
…Though honestly it could just be lag for all I know, but that’s what seems to work better for me.

Aren’t weapons like the BRs, hitscan while others like the mangler are projectile?

That’s what I thought. I just want an official reply.

the BR was hit scan in halo 2, but I don’t think it has been since. You can easily test this yourself in a custom game with a friend or a BTB match…

It moves so fast that it’s basically hitscan, but fun fact, it isn’t. It just effectively is in multiplayer map ranges.

This. In Theater you can see the projectile, so you can tell it isn’t hitscan.
But, effectively, it is because the bullets move so fast. Which is good because I don’t want to have to try to add leading shots to the mess of the current system

That’s actually not a good indicator. A lot of games use fake projectile visuals.

But in Campaign, you can actually engage at long enough distances to need to lead.

Just boot up a custom game on a BTB map, and shoot down the longest sight line you can find. Then boot up theater mode and start counting the frames it takes for how long the BR shot takes to hit the wall. If it’s less than a few frames than you probably don’t need to lead in most situations, but if it’s more than there is your answer. 343 doesn’t have to explain observable mechanics.

Pretty much all UNSC guns are hitscan.

Theater mode isn’t even working right, though.

It works right enough. If you are trying to view a 30 second clip. If you are trying to tell if someone is cheating good luck.

I wanna say the weapons are all projectile based except for the Shock Rifle (Beam), Sentinel Beam (Beam) AR (Hitscan), and maybe Sniper Rifle (Hitscan, but feels off).

BR may be hitscan, certainly feels this way in swat at times especially on Behemoth, but the latency is so wonky it’s really hard to tell.

The BR was NOT hitscan in H2. It had a very fast speed of 1000 units per second, but it was not hitscan.

This is proven with mods that let you change the projectile, as well as slowing it down.

BR and Commando are hitscan. As far as I can tell, most other weapons (including the sniper and sidekick) are projectile. I personally find it frustrating and unintuitive (especially when combined with weapon bloom), but that is how it is.

my bad then, I thought I recalled a post in a update where Bungie specifically said it was hitscan.

kinda weird how everyone feels the need to point this out too me, since Halo 2 has been dead and gone for how many years now.

You’ll probably get a much faster answer, more reliable answer and video evidence asking Aozolai to look into it in his YouTube comments than expecting an answer from 343

Edit: or at least look through his already done weapon analysis videos to see if already done

BR shoots projectiles, but they travel very fast. You hardly ever have to lead targets on arena maps. But sometimes leading targets slightly is more accurate, especially if they move vertically (like from the base to top mid and beyond on Aquarius, or from the flag to one of the towers on Behemoth). Most of the time though, BR encounters happen from ranges where it’s not really necessary to lead at all.
