I think that with 343i trying to explore John’s humanity, the characters should (execpt on the battle field) refer to him as John instead of “Chief”, “117”, “Sierra 117” or "Master Chief. It shows that he is human and not a number or a machine.
He is a Spartan. A soldier, he is number 117 and the symbol of the master chief.
Although Cortana did use John at the end of halo 3. Also she uses it in halo 4 I believe.

Yes, but the title and number take away from his humanity
Not all of the characters should, that would be awkward. Only Cortana should.

True, but if canon is anything to go by, he finds it odd when people refer to him as “John”.

Halesy should too, she does in the books
I think it would be better that the Spartans/Infinity officers refer to him by his rank and Spartan tag, since they idolize him as a hero, and use it out of respect for him, and Cortana be the only one that refers to him as John since she is the one with the closest, most personal relationship with him.
Edit: If Halsey is in the game too, she can refer to him by his name aswell since she also knows him on that kind of personal level aswell (obviously, since in a way she’s technically like a mother to him).
Chances are, regular foot soldiers probably don’t even know his real name haha. I think he should be referred to by his titles unless spoken to by: Cortana, Halsey, or any of his Spartan comrades.

I agree with that, but Halesy should call him John

See my edit.

Agreed, Lasky might call him John but probably chief out of respect since John inspired him

She is in the game, and she probably will because she does in the books
if they want him to be more human they need to show his face. i still think he’s a robot sometimes
As I’m pretty sure it’s already been said, calling him “John” would be not be formal at all in the military. I’m not expecting anyone in campaign to call him John save for Cortana, Halsey (if she appears in game), and possibly another commanding officer. otherwise no I think it would be really silly.

Would Lasky even know him by anything other than Master Chief/Spartan 117? He was only inspired to become who he is now by his one and possibly only encounter with him. I highly dought that John would give his personal information to who was at that time just a Marine Corps trainee.
> if they want him to be more human they need to show his face. i still think he’s a robot sometimes
They should never show his face! Its okay if its seen when he was a child, but not currently
> if they want him to be more human they need to show his face. i still think he’s a robot sometimes
I hope they don’t show his face, that’s the last thing 343 needs to do with their first Halo game. And honestly, I wouldn’t be hurt if they never revealed Master Chief’s face at all in the series.
Only people that know him real well should call him John. Like Cortana and Halsey.
> if they want him to be more human they need to show his face. i still think he’s a robot sometimes
But that would kill the illusion.
As one of the developers said in the ViDoc, a wonderful thing about Sci-Fi ia that people can recognize people as people without their faces shown.
Master Chief has a good shroud of secrecy and mystery around his appearance, which fuels the illusion that you are the Chief, following from his eyes. It also helps the view of him being a supersoldier since age 6, raised to be a soldier.
