Not that I necessarily want her to (at least not in her current, inappropriate form), but I expect Cortana will return in H5 or possibly in H6 (or whatever title it goes by). Here’s what may be a pretty good hint that she will return eventually…
I just don’t think Microsoft would be doing this if Cortana was never to make a return to the Halo story. But anyway, that’s just what I think.
EDIT: Note that I’m not actually saying the product mentioned in the article is canonical. I’m deducing this from a marketing perspective…
Because Microsoft is trying to use their Flagship Videogame franchise character as a real life AI, you think she is going to come back to the video game?
Microsoft is milking the hell out of the Halo series. Cortana is an AI. We all know this. Apple has Siri as their smartphone AI. Google has Google Now. Microsoft is just using a popular name they own the rights to in order to do the same thing. It’s called marketing. It’s not a hint at Cortana’s return to Halo or anything of the sorts.
Also, I want to know how Cortana’s form is “inappropriate.” That is the dumbest thing I’ve heard. It’s not like she is showing any sort of indecent skin, because she has no skin. She is literally just a holographic image that she choses.
Some of the AI’s programmers were Halo fans, so they used Cortana as a codename for an early internal build. It leaked out and got a positive response, so Microsoft decided to use it for the main release. That’s all.
She’ll definitely come back. You don’t see her die and you all know about the golden rule in entertainment media: “If you don’t see a character die, they aren’t dead or they’re coming back to life”.
I guarantee that 343i and Microsoft will bring back one of their most important characters. Maybe not by Halo 5 but definitely by Halo 6.
Yes, I do think it’s a good hint… and precisely for marketing reasons. Why incorporate a character into other products if the character never again makes a real presence in its original product? I think that would be bad marketing. Besides there are too many loose ends in the storyline anyway that hint toward her return anyway… At any rate, we’ll see.
About Cortana’s form, plenty of people have mentioned on the forums how overly sexualized she has become from game to game, and especially in H4. I happen to agree with that sentiment, especially since the character models often come from motion capturing and thus real people. So essentially you’re looking at a person’s body, just rendered as a blue hologram in-game. In my opinion, it’s inappropriate at best…

Female characters should never be made to look attractive. It’s just objectification, right? Disregarding that Halo 4’s Cortana has by far the most in-depth and developed version of her character so far.

She’s a hologram of a naked human female and her breasts have become larger with every iteration. I think you’ll find this falls under the heading of “blatant objectification”. What happened to the tomboyish Cortana from Combat Evolved?
Cortana’s dead dude, get over it. I’ve grown impatient with amount of people who can’t accept that she’s dead. It has been stated multiple times, officially, that she is dead. You can try and argue that Guilty Spark was dead too, and if Bungie had still been in charge, he probably would have been. But he isn’t, and that at least is believable. Forerunner AI’s are tough, and the fact that it took 3 blasts from a Splaser to do enough damage to Spark, some parts still remained intact, as did his AI core. The same cannot be said for Cortana since the ship that she was currently in was destroyed by a nuke. People can make up as many theories as they want. The Librarian made a copy of her, she sent herself into Slipspace, or she’s inside the Didacts suit.
The Librarian couldn’t have made a copy, because if she did, it’d be on Requiem, and Requiem was destroyed. And she used her hardlight copies to restrain him and blind him. Besides, she has been confirmed dead 4 times. The Epilogue description says she’s dead, bot the Master Chief and Cortana pages in the Essential Visual Guide(Or something like that) says she’s dead, and 343 Industries has confirmed that she is in fact dead. /rant

Precisely for marketing their Windows phones. That’s it. They kept it so it could be a little different. Look at some of the articles. The Windows phone AI, Cortana, is an AI with attitude. That’s the whole point of having her as their AI. She isn’t as polite as the other AIs like Siri. She is also a big name that will help give the phone some weight in the eyes of the fans of the franchise.
The fact that she looks better and better in each new game is because the graphics improve with each game that comes out. Do you really want her to still have pointy breasts? That would be stupid. She is a hologram, she chose her own image, as all AIs do. I don’t think anyone who can chose their image would go for a fat, ugly representation of the human body. Also for her form to be inappropriate, they would have to include things from the nude body, like showing off her -Yoink!- or something along those lines. Otherwise, it’s no different from having a character who is in a wet suit. The body shape they use is an exact representation of the character that plays her. The person who does all of her motions isn’t naked when she does her motion capture scenes. It’s not objectification or anything of the sorts. If you think it is, then killing of Johnson in H3 was racist because he was black. It’s stupid and far fetched. It’s a game. Quit reading into things too much.

The only difference I see if a difference in graphics. If there would have been enough tech in the original xbox to produce the same graphics back then as there are now, then the only thing that would be different is her color and maybe the length of her hair.
Just to clarify, I never said I want her to return. But as many times as Guilty Spark supposedly died and then came back (which he’s still around in some form, according to the books), chances are whatever Cortana fans out there will be happy to see her returning…
But no, I would prefer that she didn’t return at all, especially if they continue to render her similar to H4. And yes, nudity objectifies women, whether animated, rendered in-game, etc… No doubt about that. It’s wrong, and that isn’t subjective or mere opinion… And improved character development doesn’t somehow negate the increase in objectification.
When it comes to tight-fitting wet suits and things of that nature… yeah, I was assuming that they used stuff like that. But you know, you don’t see people running around in public in stuff like that, because… it’s inappropriate. Why stuff like this isn’t considered inappropriate in other contexts, such as the beach or on the movie screen… you can chalk it up to human depravity and inconsistent morality.
There have been articles written about how the Metal Gear series has been guilty of such objectification as well. Obviously it’s a problem in the gaming industry (definitely in the entertainment industry in general), but it would be great if the Halo franchise could steer clear of that sort of thing…

Don’t bother. This community doesn’t give a -Yoink- about facts. They’d much rather have Chief get his holographic girlfriend back and give him a sappy, happy ending than let Cortana pass on in peace, content with saving Chief and helping save humanity once again.

She is confirmed dead by 343i. However, revival is still a possibility for an AI.

Yeah, we don’t know the extent of AI capabilities, especially one like Cortana. ‘Dead’ means nothing to a super-hologram five centuries in the future who created by the top human scientist at the time, using tech from an ancient superior alien race.
But I don’t see why we should consider a smart home add-on (awesome as it may be) to be canon.
Unless of course, the fragments of Cortana got jumbled up into the satellites surrounding Earth, and she’s interfacing with us from there.

Special pleading. You can’t claim death means nothing given that she has been confirmed dead multiple times, we’ve seen plenty of AIs die, even ones made by Halsey, nor was Cortana made with Forerunner technology.

Where do I state I want Cortana to return, and 100% believe she will?
What I’m trying to get across is that we don’t know what she’s capable of. Confirmed ‘dead’, eh? The popular theory is that the Librarian did something with her… why else would she be taken by it/her? Death is only something with living beings. She was a hologram. Unlike any other.
Oh, and I rewathced a cutscence and was rereading stuff, and I had scrambled something Halsey had said around, and I had assumed she was Forerunner tech. Guess that goes to show how much I know about the Halo Universe.
