Thanks man.

While I do think they’ve improved from Halo 4, I still think their art is a bit hit or miss. On one hand I think Sanghelios, for the most part, looks amazing. On the other hand, even though Forerunner structures have been toned down a bit from what I can remember, I still feel like 343i’s Forerunner designs are too noisy and elaborate, and don’t really reflect the elegance that Bungie set for Forerunner structures.

Their human structures all seem a bit soulless with every city, every space station, and every space ship being same dull-colored pipes, rounded corners, slanted surfaces, and bright warning colors. It’s as if every human structure had been designed by the same architect.

Then there’s of course the issue with a lot of the Covenant character designs being grossly different from the designs of Bungie, so much so that it’s not obvious that they’re even the same species anymore.

A final note is that most of their skyboxes feel forgettable. With Bungie’s games I always have this very distinct memory of skyboxes. Partly because they often had some very distinct feature, but also because they played so well into the atmosphere of the mission and because they often were just beautiful pieces of art. In 343i’s games I don’t really have a memory of having just looked at the sky and thought it was beautiful.

In summary, there are a few places where I can give them credit. Some of their environments, like Sanghelios, look interesting. I have few gripes about the vehicles. However, most environments just don’t stand out as interesting, or they stand out in a way that doesn’t fit the theme, and I generally find their character designs objectionable. So, as far as I’m concerned, their art isn’t that great, with a few notable exceptions, and there’s a lot to improve.

Art direction is subjective so this can’t really be considered ‘proof’ of anything.

I think some of 343i’s designs are appealing, but their utilisation (Forerunner Structures especially) leaves a lot to be desired.

Last time I checked, being “amazing” was one of those things that is subjective and varies from person. Also last time I checked, you can’t prove something that is subjective.

Some guy on YouTube can say that 343’s art style is amazing. Some writer at Kotaku can say 343’s art style is amazing. Some random poster on forum can say that 343’s art style is amazing.

But none of it is definitive proof that it is amazing, because you can’t prove an opinion to be correct. Well, at least as far as I’m aware, you can’t.

For me, 343’s art style is all over the place. Some things, such as the Warthog, Blue Team’s armor, the Strident-class, Sangheilos and others, I like. But there’s a lot that I really do not like, like most of the non-Covenant/non-ancient Sangheili architecture in Halo 5, the redesigned Pelican, and a fairly large chunk of the armor available in Halo 5.

And, quite frankly, the examples you’ve presented feel like cherry-picking, using the better examples of 343’s art. You didn’t use Seeker to try and “prove” your point. You didn’t use the D79 Pelican to “prove” your point.

But, uh, basically: You can’t prove an opinion. You can rationalize why you have that opinion. But you can’t prove why yours is “more correct” than another.

These games are definitely eyecandy, however I despised most of halo 4’s armors. Those were godawful to me. Halo 5 definitely stepped it up on the armor though.

That’s not true. (o_O )
No one ever played Halo 4 or 5, shot a Grunt/Elite/Jackel etc and then thought, huh? what the heck was that?
They knew exactly what they were shooting at.
I get that this forum is filled with die-hard fans who can notice these differences, but trust me, casual fans (the vast majority of Halo fans) don’t pay that much attention to face textures and where mandibles are placed.

On a side note, I really like the creepy body-mesh suits of Halo 4 Spartans. I thought they were -Yoink!-. lol.

343 should continue the art direction that they took with HW2. It was mix of old and new and I particularly enjoyed it.

I didn’t really mean it in the sense that anyone would have trouble knowing what they’re shooting, but in the sense that if you were to tell a biologist that the bird-like Bungie Jackals and the lizard-like 343i Jackals are the same species, I think that would be a tough for them to swallow.

I’m not at all trying to argue that it would hurt the experience of anyone else, but that they look far too different to my taste.

i like 343i’s art stile it is streamlined and dynamic, good to know that i’m not the only one who likes the art stile!

Some of 343i’s designs are fine, but I find some of Bungie’s to be better. (Some of the vehicle designs, the armor, and the Forerunner structures.)

What I liked about 343i’s designs:

  • Blue Team’s armor: They were able to retain the iconic Spartan design despite the obvious change in aesthetic, making the Master Chief recognizable. - The Warthog: When I first saw the advertisement of the new design of the Warthog for Forza Motorsports 4, I knew that it would be a beauty. The spring and piston feature (I think they’re the shock absorbers) near the wheels make it seem like a real world vehicles. All and all, it has some pretty nice features; I like the railings on the hood which I think are used to strap some supply packs around. - The H2 anniversary Battle Rifle: I loved how they kept the classic look to it while adding some technical details to it for further realism. I hope they carry that over to next one. - Some of Covenant vehicles: Their organic design does make them seem more alien, which they are. I guess it took a while for the Wraith design to grow on me. I’d admit that it did look a little weird at first. - The Monitor design: Strange, I know, to appreciate the new Monitor looks. It does make them more advanced with it being more round. What I liked about Bungie’s designs:

  • The Scorpion tank: Especially the look in Halo 2 anniversary. No offense to 343, but I think that Bungie’s design seem more tank-like, like a real piece of heavy military hardware. - The Pelican: Once again, the Halo 2 anniversary look. 343i’s design tends to look more like an aviation craft with its rounded cockpit, whereas I prefer the more miltaristic style they did. - The armor: Reach was good design for it. 343 seem to have deviated from that path. True, they wanted to be more creative, but I feel as though they have forgotten what made the Spartan armor iconic and memorable. There are few exceptions though, but most of them aren’t so great. - Scorpion: Once again, the Halo 2 anniversary look. No offense to 343, but Bungie’s design seem more like a real piece of heavy military hardware. - The Covenant: The new designs barely seem like the kind they were. 343I have again forgotten what made the old design so great. - Forerunner structures: The current one seems too advanced for an ancient civilization structure, a bit like transformers (the Michael Bay film.).

This would be a good compromise

Interesting viewpoints from all perspectives

Yeah I like the look of all the games but halo 4 and 5 are stunning. I would agree that halo reach and 2a are gorgeous too.

Thank you for the response. I believe when we take a step back and view this debate from the millions of fans that are not on forums we can ascertain that most people can not tell the difference between bungie and 343. I had friends that did not even know that bungie did not develop halo 4. 343 should be able to keep their artstyle for their games and every halo game has a unique look anyway. I would argue that halo 5 looks more like 2 than halo reach.

That is all from me for today thank you for the feedback

Visually 343’s games pale in comparison to Bungie’s.
