In my vast Halo career (spanning a proud 3 months), I have owned and used 3 headsets:
A $18 third party headset
A $35 Turtle Beach 50X
A $200 Astro Gaming A40 (My main, of course)
The third party one was trash. Looked kinda cool but broke in less then two weeks. Not worth an investment.
The Turtle Beach 50X’s is a great brand and a great model. Problem was that the sound quality was good but it wasn’t great. (If you can’t get the money for Astro Gaming or high end Turtle Beach’s, these work.)
I’m not even going to go into a review for Astro Gaming because I’m pretty sure a lot of people have written much better reviews then I ever could. I think they are perfect, especially with me because I have a big head.
The one thing that makes high end headsets better then low end (sound wise) is that now, for me, pausing to hear direction of foot steps or thruster packs is now a legitimate strategy and has made me a better player.
One little tip, Go for the eBay route. I got my Astro’s for $75. You can probably get a pair for less then $100. Find a listing, write the lister and ask if they are in “perfect working order”. If they say yes, get them. I can attest that these headsets are well worth even to $150.
For the sake of your fellow Spartans, please, invest in a quality headset.
I really miss the wireless Xbox 360 headsets. The Halo Reach one was/is the best earpiece/headset I have ever owned.
I don’t game with a full headset, mostly because I feel that’s a little too tryhard-y. I also like to communicate with the people around me in real life while I game, and do things that don’t require full blown ear-muffed headphones.
That 360 earpiece wireless headset was just perfect. Its range was fantastic too - I could go downstairs and grab a beer or make some food, and never be disconnected from my XBL party. Great for socializing.
I use the one that came with the xbox… it even has electrical tape on the cord from when my daughter chewed it up. She’s a real animal, went for that thing like I was dangling meat in front of a starved chihuahua. Barely enough left to tape it, honestly. Now that I read this and see what people spend on headsets it makes me understand why I get snuck up on all the time in Arena. I can never hear those guys! Also makes sense why they can always hear me lol
My Chat Headset broke a while back (wires must have been strained), and I’m currently looking into the Xbox One Stereo Headset. The price doesn’t seem to bad for $59.99 + free shipping on the Microsoft Store (from my end). I’ll probably pick one up around Boxing Day.
I have a Turtle Beach Recon 50P and my friend remarked that I sounded great on it. Maybe it was because he was just using his apple earbud mic, but I think it works just fine for a little over $40.
I got some Kingston HyperX Clouds about 2 months ago for around $80.00 US. They are awesome quite honestly, especially compared to the Xbox brand over-ear headphones I had prior.
The mic is detachable. The cord is covered in a tough fabric (not exactly sure what the proper name is). The entire piece just seems like it is good quality.
