I’m getting sick and tired of matching players with perfect strafes, positioning, high K/D’s, and almost never miss. Almost any game without these super-pros has team-players who stick together. This is not just one game out of twenty or ten, this is more than half of my games in Infinity Slayer. I am a fairly good player who wants to improve and enjoys Halo 4 for the most part, but this isn’t possible when my team is getting stomped on every single game of Infinity Slayer.
Something else interesting to note is that my Win/Loss is terrible in Infinity Slayer, yet I still get these super-players all the time. I literally had to make another account and now have to pay $130 a year instead of $65 for Xbox Live because it was so bad. Yet the same is happening on that account as well. The best part is that I see on Youtube players far better than me who aren’t matching any of these super-pros and therefore have more fun and many more options available to them.
This issue is only compounded by the fact that it takes me forever to warm up and the frustration of getting stomped on makes it take even longer, making my stats drop down. Ranked vs. Social or even a warm-up (no stat tracking) playlist would help fix this since the trueskill now is so tight that it feels like I’m playing ranked minus the actual rank.
This makes it impossible to even play for fun anymore or experiment with my playstyle. I can’t even play matchmaking any more and am now reduced to XP boosting in Spartan Ops or killing an AFK in customs to improve my aim, but this isn’t the same.
NOTE: Don’t use my K/D as a reference, since most of my Slayer K/D is from BTB, where it is fairly easy to get kills due to the long range.
I really feel your pain. It wasn’t until the waning days of Reach and H4 coming out that something between my fingers and brain finally clicked. That’s not to say I’m a great player now, but I’m a lot more confident and with that my skills seem to improve. As soon as frustration and a few bad games kick in, its time to step away for awhile.
Start reflecting on the things you have done right and what works for you. If its the Noob-combo (Plasma pistol/DMR), then so be it.
If your whole team is running around as Lone Wolves, shadow one of them. Pairs or more are always effective and you can even pick up on a few things over their shoulder.
If your team, even without mics seem willing to work together, do just that. And pay attention to what weapon they are using,if I see mostly BRs or DMRs I will switch to the assault rifle, something that in tandem with them can take out a single or multiple targets rather quickly.
A lot of behavior over time can become predictable. My ability to see a enemy heading in a certain direction and cut them off at the pass is still improving, but I find it an important skill.
Vote for the map you play best on, its a start to getting your confidence up and the skills will probably follow. Take difficult maps as a challenge, for me I’ve been working to improve my gameplay on Abandon, a map that really got the best of me early on.
Learn the maps. I suck at knowing where power weapon spawns are, but if you know the maps well enough for pursuit, escape, long-range fire, pinning an enemy down, it helps a lot.
If you have a mic and it turns out someone else is willing to talk, stick with them as a duo. Communication helps immensely.
Be aware that cruddy periods of losses always come. I still have my butt handed to me quite frequently.
I still consider myself a Noob, and most of these tips are more for the frustrated player like you and me, but watching other videos of gameplay, even the MLB stuff on the Waypoint homepage, has mee rethinking strategies on maps.
Welcome to the ‘‘My Trueskill is too Freaking High even if I lose 5 Games in a row’’ club guys. Cookies are on your left and sodas are on your right. Enjoy your stay and don’t start any fight with other club members.
Yeah it does that to me a lot as well, good tips in the first comment stick with your team and try to establish enemy locations before you run out, other then that it is getting me close games pretty often, or was anyways I’m just joining 343 in thier holiday break from halo, after hitting 97 without playing anything else I just needed a break.
Coming from someone who is considered good now but started Halo as a terrible player, keep trying. If you really want to win, try to get better by learning maps, playing with teams, etc. Don’t give up.
I understand except I am on the other side of that spectrum. I constantly get teamed up with people who stand no chance against my team. I am not totally sure but I am guessing there is no Trueskill system in this game?
I know this isn’t much help but my recommendations are to use and abuse the DMR. Not only does it outplay the BR close range but it’s insane long range. It takes a little practice but in a few days you will be surprised at how far away your foes are dropping.
Communication! Simple but game changing. As I can tell you play the game for fun and that is fine. Not everyone needs to play this game competitively, however, a few call outs here and there can never hurt!
My MatchUps seem to be pretty good, I’m still getting my -Yoink- handed to me on a regular basis but looking at my stats, my kill/death ratio is changing and I’m finding it easier to stay alive longer in each match.
I’m finding very few people with mics and those that do don’t seem that interested in working on any strategy, when I do come up against a well organised team the difference is obvious, especially in CTF and SlayerPro. It makes a difference actually playing in a “team”!
I think if Matchmaking just had party matching it’d be a lot better. I know that silent team work can happen between a random team, but I’ve ran into a bit too many teams for that to be the case every time. I’m a loner, match me up with loners.
Another tip in reflecting on some of my recent gameplay.
Be prepared to change up your loadout, viz a viz, an opposing team’s tactics may not call for what you initially went in with and I think some folks tend to forget they can change their loadout while respawning.
Similarly, upon a kill or dead bodies, be aware of dropped power weapons or anything that might prove effective with what you already have. I play with Resupply in my loadout, so running over corpses to pick up grenades has become habitual, but I’ve also come across the occasional SAW or Sticky Detonator.

That’s another good tip! I’ve found myself swapping out my Plasma Pistol for a Boltshot if I find that the enemy team isn’t using vehicles, or I’ll switch from my DMR to my BR if I’m constantly in mid-range combat!
When I get off work sometimes I don’t feel like trying my but off as soon as I get in a match. Which is why there should be a Social Playlist and a Rank Playlist like in Halo 2 and Halo 3. You can start off with random people in social and do good or bad depending on what you happen to get and then once you are warmed up try hard in Ranked to get your rank up. But you know how 343 is, you can label anyone as bad so everyone gets no rank and no social.
