To me it always felt like the point of the rings were to mimic nature and earth in a very uncanny way, complementing the mysticality of the large brutalist structures sparsely populating it. With large chunks of the landscape itself comprising massive expanses of clean, exposed metal hexagons, it takes away from that ominous feeling in a big way.
A petty nitpick and I get its to save on resources but I’m just not a fan of the great barcode walls dominating the scenery.
Check the lore. Those are a result of the ring repairing itself after catastrophic damage. The further away from the busted section the cleaner the environment will be.
It’s a broken ring, with large chunks of it destroyed, it would of caused a significant shift in the structure, hence the hexagon pillars, has nothing to do with saving resources.
Whilst last year there was alot of negative feedback about the pillars, now they have done so much improving the graphics, lighting etc they look so much better, and fit in alot better.
When playing btb on fragmentation, I didn’t think twice about the pillars, or on behemoth, whilst they are on a smaller scale, given the size of the sandboxes there would be more bulks of hexagon pillars. Give it a bit of time playing the game and it will feel like they have always been there.
I’m all for it. Its going to be apart of the story and its a new interesting take on a halo ring. We’ve been on how many rings at this point in how many of the same enviroments? Its a unique lore friendly spin. Can’t wait for more of it to be explained when it comes out.

Two. We’ve been on two. Three if you wanna count Alpha Halo’s H3 knockoff for all of the 15 minutes we were on it. Four if you wanna count Alpha Halo’s second low-res knockoff.
I get what they were going for and I’m fine with it, but they just look so …bland and awkwardly weaved into the environment, I wish they had a bit more texture personality.
not a fan of them either, in my opinion it a specific pattern that you cant just throw around like in Infinites case, wish they did something different
I don’t like them either, but at least they look way better than last year.
People are bringing up the lore, but that’s irrelevant here to me, it’s about aesthetics and immersion imo, not logic.
Whatever it would be designed to look like it could be given a canonical explanation. But canonical explanations does not necessarily make it a pleasing design.

Agreed. I’m not a fan of them either but they (343i) have made them look better.

Is it really based on lore though? I can’t find any info about them from before Infinite’s reveal.
Even if it is, I’d argue they could have had way less of them without contradicting canon. I’m guessing previous lore isn’t the reason behind the design.
If I were a super advanced stellar engineering species creating simulated environments, I too might first create terrain noise via adjustable modular lincoln-logs-from-space upon which you can than layer stone, soil and foliage.
What did y’all think was under the “natural terrain”? It had to be metal and machinery eventually, didn’t it? And the hexagons look far better than that weird square-plate scaffolding we saw during the Halo 3 Warthog Run.

Completely agree with this. I really don’t get the animosity towards the hexagon pillars, to me they break up the landscapes in such a stunning way, and I love the areas in which they create overhangs, caves and the like. That’s a great point about the warthog run 3, those metal plates were always incredibly ugly and ungraceful to me.

If it’s fitting in the Lore, than i get why they are there. Cool mechanic of the Halo Ring.

I’m pretty sure that the events of the ring being broken like that happened in the Primordium book near the end. I could be wrong, but I also won’t go into detail in case someone wants to read it.
