For me, depends on when Halo Wars 2 takes place, if it is 2557, 2558, or around, it might be Master Chief, unless he is unnecessary for the story. But you should know, the leader isn’t always the hero. In Halo: Reach, Noble Six wasn’t the leader of Noble Team, but he was the hero.
I don’t think chief will even be mentioned… the Sprit of Fire has been stranded for a very long time. Chances are there won’t have any contact with the outside world.
Well they do have very old tech.

It is probable that Halo Wars 2 is going to take place between Halo Wars and [COMIC SPOILER] Halo Escalation (SoF was in that wasn’t it?). The only people on the ship who even know who Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 is would be Red Team, his peers.

He’s popped up in places like halo reach as a Easter egg and we had his armor so that does not mean he can not be a hero.
I think free or paid for Hero character DLCs could be a good idea. It would defiantly keep the game fresh after a while.

I’m not very good at lore but, I don’t think chief would’ve been born in the timeline of the Halo Wars games. Meaning he would be very irrelevant in the game.
I doubt MC i EVER going to be in Halo Wars 2. yes there might be some mentiones of the legendary Spartan, but it’s all going to be about Red Team

Because Chief was on Reach. He has never been on the Spirit of Fire. When you say, “we had his armor,” what do you mean? The Spartan armour in Halo Wars is MK IV. Chief is never shown wearing it. Undoubtedly, he may have worn it at some point. But he’s never been shown wearing it so it’s not attributable to him.

its armor, and what I meant was that we had is armor on reach…and I am starting to forget my lore facts that master chief was on reach so thanks for reminding me.
Halo wars 2 played after halo 5. i think the infinitiy will find Spirit of Fire. You can Play spartan IV and Team red, But not Master Chief and Team blau.
