I have a lot of ideas for Halo-related fan fiction and I would like to get your opinions! I threw some options up on the poll and would love to hear some feedback. If you have a different suggestion, or an idea that branches off of one of the options above, post it here and I will take a look!
They all seem like interesting ideas, especially the ODST and Spartan II ones. The James Bond style one could be really interesting, as long as the antagonists are mainly covenant and it isn’t literally a James Bond insurrection story set in the halo universe.
I have a few ideas that’d love to do but probably will never write; 1. Because I’m lazy 2. I won’t have the time.
One of my ideas is about a trio of Spartan IIs who survived Reach (Entirely possible, research into Beta-Red Actual on Halopedia or something) and their lives after Reach. It would focus on the memory of the other Spartan IIs as well as detail the trio’s involvement in the Battle of Earth, Battle of the Ark and eventually the Battle of Requiem. The main character would be a competent Jack-of-all-trades Spartan, while the other two would be Beta-Red Actual herself who would be the team leader and a close friend of the main character. Eventually these two would be killed off leaving the main character to take charge of a team of Spartan IIIs and step up to the position of team leader, something he’s never done before as his leadership capabilities weren’t his forte.
Another idea is about a group of ODSTs, all from different units and all unrelated who meet through the Spartan IV project. It details their lives and histories before their induction into the Spartan IV project and then their missions after they’re all augmented and placed in the same team. It would also show their family lives and their struggle to cope with the fact that they are now weapons of the UNSC. There would be a sequel to this in which the entire team is disbanded after a botched mission which leaves some of the team dead, some wounded beyond repair and some mentally unstable. It would follow them through their rehabilitation and would include flashbacks of their time in the war before eventually piecing together the mission that left them all incapable of serving.
I have probably close to half a dozen ideas of stories that i intended to make into machinima but some of them are so complex it would be impossible to do so. I’ve thought about trying to find another medium to do this in such as short stories, or motion comic etc.
As much as i love writing fan fiction i just can’t imagine anyone reading an entire book that i wrote, something to think about. But the James bond story would be a cool one if done right. Make sure to make it a personal story, give him flaws, don’t just make him a bad ace with no real trials.
So here is my problem with making the Covenant the main bad guy:
It’s hard to be undercover when you are a human and they are aliens. Although I can think of a few ways I might be able to make this work, it is going to be tough. It might be mix insurrection/covenant remnant.
The James-Bond style ONI operative story could be very interesting. If you do it right, it’d be a great read. IMO.
For me, I’m writing a fan fic story about an Elite. He’s being interrogated by ONI. They want to know why something recently has happened. The Elite will tell them what they want to know, but he has to tell his story for what happened to make sense. He first starts out as one of the weakest Elites to be integrated into the Covenant. He has many flaws (very weak built skin on the opposite side of his stomach, colorblind, very weak built wrists, weak built legs make it hard for him to run for long distances, etc…). He eventually becomes an Honor Guard, and ends up being one of the highest ones and protects Prophet of Truth. He manages to overcome all of his many flaws. When the Great Schism happens, he wants to kill Truth and chases him to Earth. Stuff happens. When the war ends, he heads back to Sangheilios. He becomes a member of the Ascetics. Fast forward a few years, and Jul 'Mdama recruits him. The war keeps going, and eventually he realizes he’s joined the wrong side. Then the “recent thing that happened” is explained, and then him and ONI go deal with what happened.
Unfortunately, I don’t know what the “recent thing that happened” is. Can’t think of something. It has to happen after Spartan Ops Season 1. I know that for sure.
343i said their stories all have to connect to the main trilogy somehow, so while I know this book would never get published, I’m still keeping that in mind, because it is a fan fic after all.
I got the first two chapters done, and have started working on the third chapter. Definitely going to take time before it’s finished, but I’m loving writing it.
I’ve thought about writing a fan fic story about the planet Far Isle, the planet that was severely controlled by Innies, and the UNSC was forced to nuke it.
Either an average Spec Ops ODST who eventually becomes a Spartan IV story or a Michael Westen/James Bond-esque ONI operative who is awesome at any situation a spy faces against the Innies and Mercs
To be honest with you, I probably will not be doing a story based around a Spartan IV. I’m not a huge fan for some reason. Based on my timeline they will be mentioned and maybe make an appearance, but I won’t be making the main character one. If I do an ODST story it will most likely be about a small squad detailed for Black Ops insertions behind enemy lines. Both by SOEIV and by “archaic” free-fall jumps. I’d make it interesting either way.
It’s looking like the ONI Secret Agent story is going to be the victor. I am still outlining a couple stories so I will wait for a few more days before I make a final decision.
To be honest, I would rather not see a story where we have a Human protagonist. There are plenty of great ones out there already. I would love to see an Alien protagonist. Maybe a Sanghelli. Or a Hugarok. Or, If you really want a Human main character, perhaps a story were he/her and a crew are stranded on a planet where a heavy Flood infection has taken place. This would be really interesting.
I suppose I can understand that. I might do some very short stories about a Huragok. That could be interesting for sure. I think I would have to do more practice before committing to an alien protagonist in a larger story due to not being very familiar with writing from the eyes of a Sangheili.
Also, as to the flood infection, to me it would feel too… Zombie apocalypse-ish. And I am kind of sick of zombies to be honest.
They all sound cool, but I like the idea of the Project Orion setting. There is very little we know about Project Orion compared with the other areas you thought of exploring so you would have a lot of room for manoeuvring your story and a lot of room for creativity to play with. I would look at that.
I myself ave started writing a fan fic, but I don’t have much time to spend on it unfortunately, so I wish you the best of luck with yours. Mine in particular deals with the Spartan II’s and one in particular who survives Reach and ends up on a Halo and so on. I’ve written up a prologue on here which deals with his initial abduction as a six year old, but it got no interest so I would post elsewhere.
Something about, Sangheili working with humans, to destroy the Covenant remnants.
I don’t know, i find it interresting how “aliens” and humans could work together. Instead of work together.
I once read something about a unggoy and Sangheili scientist looking in to the humans history. And asking questions about it.
I know sounds boring, but i found it rather enjoyable.
It’s a fast universe, so many possible stories to tell.
A story about an ODST that has been in many battles, harvest, on the halos etc and an elite who realises Jul is a traitor and tries to leave the Covenant and fight with the UNSC. He is on an installation when he sees this ODST get hit by a ghost, he runs over to the ODST and picks him up and returns him to safety…[sometime later]…the ODST has made a full recovery but the elite lost his arm for trying to help him (almost got executed but was saved last second) they take the elite back to a ONI base where he allows them to trial him in certain things…[after some time]… He gets issued an experimental combat exo-skeleton, dubbed the Trojan.
The story continues this elites and a force he recruits then the arbiter comes in somewhere.
