Heavy FPS drops on Halo CEA

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with Halo : CEA on PC, playing with anniversary graphics is fine. But as soon as I player multiplayer or with classic graphics, I always have below 30 FPS while playing with classic graphics, for the campaign on easier difficulties, it’s ok but for things such as higher difficulties, this is where it becomes challenging.

My specs are the following :
OS : Windows 7 (Family Edition)
Processor: Intel(R) Core™ i5-6500 CPU @ 3.20GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM (DDR4)
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
Display Memory: 4095 MB

Thanks for reading me, have a nice day.

So you get FPS drops either in Multiplayer or by using classic graphics in? I would definitely update my graphic drivers: NVIDIA Driver Downloads

The drivers aren’t an issue, this has been a problem with a bunch of other people using different systems and specs, and all those had in common was that they were running the MCC version of Halo: CE. The GPU isn’t the issue, nor the CPU or anything else about the end-user’s system, the problem is with the game and 343i needs to address that. People who are able to run the original Gearbox port at 120+ FPS can barely run the MCC version at 24 FPS.

What Resolution are you playing on? It may be getting super-sampled. Also I would run the game in Full Screen if possible. The only time I experienced Frame Drops was when there was a lot of Foliage present (Silent Cartographer, Jungle in Guilty Spark).

I don’t know 100% if this is the case, but you gaming on Windows 7 may be causing some issues. I’d see if there is any updates to Windows. I think MS got rid of Windows 7 support recently. If they did, it may be time to upgrade to Windows 10.

I have the exact same problem:
When I play HALO MCC CEA PC on remastered graphics, it runs at 60-65 Frames Per Second which is good , but when I press TAB, and switch to old (original) graphics the Frames Per Second just drops to 15-30, then I press TAB again and switch to remastered graphics and the Frames Per Second goes up again to 60-65 Frames Per Second , can someone help me with a solution to boost the Frames Per Second when played on original graphics. My spec: GeForce GTX 970, Intel i-5 2500k 3.30 GHz
Note that in Halo Reach I have 100+ FPS
If anyone have a solution please help

Even me
Specs:
HP Probook 4540s
i7-3632QM
8GB DDR3
Intel HD4000+AMD HD7650M 2GB DDR3
Windows 7 64bit

The game runs at 30-40fps on anniversary graphics but switch to classic it immediately drops to 15fps
(I know my specs are below minimum requirements)
But the issue seems weird when I checked using MSI afterburner
When in classic graphics the game has 0% GPU utilization, but when in Anniversary like expected 99%
I have submitted a ticket

Lower your resolution and close all other applications when you launch the game. Disconnect additional monitors if you have them plugged in.

Did all of that
Even reinstalled the whole MCC.
Still the same issue
Tried older versions of drivers, no difference
It seems to be the issue of the game

What is your resolution set to?

1280x720, 720p
I even tried all the way down to 320x240 (Yea, I know the game supports that for some weird reason) still no improvements

(Note: Halo 2 classic runs at 60fps (I capped it at 60), Reach and 3 runs at 30-40fps, CE classic in theory should run at 60)

I have the same issue. I have an ultra high end pc that cost 13000 USD. yes. 13K USD.

SPEC:
AMD Ryzen 3990x threadripper 64 Cores 128 Threads OC to 4.175ghz all cores.
EVGA FTW3 ultra RTX 3090 OC to 1970 mhz boost
256GB G.Skill Trident Neo Z RGB at 3200Mhz (32GB x 8 sticks) in quad channel.
I ran Halo anniversary Halo CE. and witnessed frame drop to 25 ish. I am playing at 4k. I limited the fps to 120. all setting on highest (high). with vsync on (my panel is 4k 144hz 1ms gsync). Driver is the latest.

Which OS are you running?
I tried upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but unfortunately the hardware doesn’t want to comply
So I tried Windows 8.1, and that resolved the Halo CE lag.
Now Halo CE runs at 120fps (Halo Custom Edition ran at 150fps)
Seems like it’s an issue with Windows 7.
My friends who run Windows 10 doesn’t seem to have any issues with CE.

win 10 pro.

Again today I tried playing Halo reach from the halo anniversary.
10 FPS. I even turned off the anti aliasing. I never cared too much for jagged edges. Just moving my mouse. I limit my fps to 120. When not moving my mouse I do get 120fps. also RAM consumption went to 100 GB. Yes. RAM use went to 100 GB+ (I have 256GB)

Other titles run fine?
Specifically check if DX9, DX10, DX11, DX12, OpenGL, Vulkan performance
DX9,DX10 you can test the orginal Crysis using DX9 exe and DX10 exe
DX11 there are plenty of titles to test - GTAV, Battlefield V, etc (Results from DX11 tests are important as Halo MCC runs on DX11.1)
OpenGL, Vulkan you can run DOOM 2016 (This is the only game I know, apart from emulators that use OpenGL)
And is Windows 10 updated?
Have you checked your power profile in Windows? That there isn’t any power saver setting enabled?
Have you checked if Windows 10 has no corruption by checking it with DISM and SFC?

I have also noted that CPU cores 1-8 are pegged at 100% and the GPU is relatively at idle.
This could be the issue that Halo MCC is unable to handle that many cores (It could be the game expects an 8-core cpu, and unlike DX12 or Vulkan, dyanmic multithread processing is unavailable in DX11).
If this is the case and things in first paragraph are all good, then I’d suggest you either disable cores in bios and verify.
or an overkill solution…
Run Linux as the native OS, run Windows as KVM-QEMU VM with 16cores, 32GB RAM, and RTX3090 pass-through.
Beware, KVM-QEMU method requires a separate GPU (Any GPU with 1GB+ graphics is fine, needed because Linux needs a display output since RTX3090 is completely dedicated for the VM) for Linux display and needs a VT-D capable motherboard.

And yea, Submit a ticket to support.halowaypoint.com

Hello guys, it’s been a while…

After finally upgrading to W10 all my FPS problems got fixed and I can now experience Halo CE multiplayer properly, thanks everyone for your advices !
