Well the title says it all, I have heard that this summer it’ll be ending. No more H3 match making?! Really I thought to myself, but at times Halo 3 has close to 25,000 people! Even at bad times I see it with 10,000…
So my question is why, obviously its money since Microsoft owns thew rights; however, I still don’t understand why removing the server this summer would be necessary? On top of removing the servers how would one get all the achievements? Some achievements specifically state it must be matchmaking if I am not wrong. Also 7 on the 7th, Officer ranks, your 1-50, legacy and of course the water mark H3 for name plates.
So even if it does not end this summer what will become of this? How would one obtain the things listed above if the servers are taken down. One other thing, Call of Duty 4 still has servers, so does Doom for Xbox arcade and it literally has at any given time about 6-7 people online. So why 3?
TL;DR
Halo 3 servers may be going down this summer is this true?

For all the reasons you’ve outlined yourself right here, don’t believe anything you hear until you see an official statement.
While I personally wouldn’t miss H3 on XBL, I can’t see them doing that to it either. With H2, that made sense, but with H3, and ODST, and them both using the same console… yeah, I refuse to believe it until I hear it from the horses mouth.
Halo 3 doesnt use servers. Halo 2 shut down cause original xbox live did. So unless xbox 360 live gets shuts down which wont be till prob around 2020 halo 3 and all 360 titles will have live (keep in mind when halo 3 goes down halo 3 odst halo wars and reach will at the same time no sooner or later, they will all go down together) Any thing about halo 3 going is a complete lie.
Just to back up what everyone else said, Halo 3 isn’t going anywhere until every single Xbox 360 game looses service. Just as when H2 went down so did every other original Xbox game. So I wouldn’t worry about it until the end of the next generation console’s life.

Well, theres the matchmaking servers… And the servers that have all the user created content on file share and the servers on bungie.net that hold all the screen shots.
But yeah, like everyone already said, theres no way Microsoft would shut down the Halo 3 servers. It’s still one of the most popular games on xbox live. Theres no reason to shut them down.

Considering that Bungie is done with Halo I imagine that the Halo 3 matchmaking servers will likely go to Microsoft/343, much like they stated would happen with the Reach servers. Although user content file servers will stick with Bungie.
> But Microsoft is known for dropping things that do not make money for them…
Doesn’t matter. Halo 3 runs on the current version of Xbox LIVE along with MW2, Black Ops, Reach and all the other games we know and play. When the next version of XBL comes out (if there is one), the old version will eventually get phased out along with the online capabilities of all the games that use the old XBL service.
