Health, and the "Health Bar"

The Health Bar and med-packs have been a Halo feature since the beginning, and were carried on in ODST, and Reach but have since been left out again. Personally, I disagree with this. I liked having med-packs scattered around the map, and having to know where they were. They played a key role in knowing the map, and I liked the idea of having to heal up again after ending a close duel, and to add to that, Pelicans in Forge mode don’t feel the same without med-packs.

It’s been a feature that’s always worked well, and I see no reason to leave it out. Especially in Halo 5, when Cortana isn’t there to tell Chief he’s gonna die. So canonically it’d make sense in that regard without an A.I. Chief would switch it on to help monitor himself a little better.

That’s the end of my rant.

I completely agree.

No, I hate health packs and the health bar. Halo 2, 3, and 4 got it right.

Canon-wise the suit heals the user through injecting biofoam and stuffz. Cortana was never needed, see Halo 3.

Gameplay-wise Health packs punish players that survived a previous engagement with an enemy, putting them at an unnecessary disadvantage for the next fight.

The Health bar should return, but not with 20 bars that faded from both sides at once like in Reach, seriously that was annoying. This is purely so you have some clue as to what your health is at, yes you’re at risk of 1-shot w/ no shields but knowing that you have 5/10 health is better than nothing.

Also, by bringing the Health bar back you can have Medkits in Customs. Everyone happy.

Don’t think they will be coming back do to the MJOLNIR automatic biofoam injectors. IIRC that was reason why they got rid of the health bar and health packs. Maybe in the next installation of ODST(Hopefully) will we see health packs again.

I honestly don’t care if health packs make a return.

But, I do want the health bar needs to return, the current system is not a good replacement, I don’t care what others say about the current system being better than the health bar. But it does not display your health, it displays you shields, and only your shields, no shields means you have no shields, it doesn’t tell me how much health I have, it doesn’t tell me that I’ll survive a melee, or I’ll die from a stray bullet.

By no means am I saying we should change the recharging health, recharging health can stay, I just want a bar that tells me my health AS WELL AS my shields.

I do not want health packs to return because it will punish you for fighting. If you are low on health you will most likely lose the next fight since you are at a disadvantage.

I remember many players not playing offensively because they were to scared that their health bar will decrease.

health system and health packs? no
it put winners of skirmishes at a disadvantage

health bar? yes
it’s nice to know how close i am to dying, rather than taking an educated guess

> No, I hate health packs and the health bar. Halo 2, 3, and 4 got it right.

I have to agree, I also hate the health bars. They slow game play, because you run back to base to get a health pack, or searching for one instead of playing.

However…

A better system IMO would be one like what the Halo REACH Elites had, where your health would regenerate over time (10/15 seconds).

So for a Spartan, you would have it that your health regenerates from 1% to 100% in 10 seconds or whatever time is best. This would also make the AA/Equipment “Regenerator” more useful, as it would regenerate in maybe 3 seconds.

This could also allow for medikits to return for an instant health refill.

I agree with health packs and health bars returning.

It adds more strategy and tactics to gameplay and makes the game more interesting. Running around knowing that your practically fully healed after every fire fight seems to make me feel invincible to some degree.

Med packs I can live without, but there is no good reason to remove the health bar even if it regenerates.

I find it rather silly that some people cannot separate having a health pack and having a health bar.

Health Bars in Halo allow you to better assess the situation and make smarter choices. Its just a bit of extra information that I quite like having. It worked just fine for Elites in Reach.

Dude, you’re getting health system and Health bar mixed up. Just because there’s a health bar does not mean there needs to be health packs.

You can have Regenerating health AND a health bar.

Agreed it befuddles my mind when people think like it’s set in stone that Health bars requires health packs to be in the game. There are games that have regenerating health AND health indicators. Plus to me, health bars alone don’t hinder the game, they improve the game, instead of having to find cover every second when you’re hit by an EMP, you can still kick butt, and roll on out with no shields and have full health.

I’m fine either way, although health packs add that twist to legendary. And perhaps an achievement?

Either way, keep the manly master chief grunts when taking damage, and add a few more.

In my opinion there should always be a health bar. The system I would like is a health bar with health that recharges at a decent rate, not immediately after the shields are up or painfully slow, but at a rate somewhere toward the faster side. There could also be health packs around that immediately refill your health if you are close enough for one. Could be almost your second wind in a close firefight as well.

What if we have regenerating health, but keep in med-packs as an option to regenerate faster? Or just be a customs option.

I am of the opinion that the health bar should 100% return. Players should know how close they are to dying. A health bar is a clear way to indicate this. It’s a no-brainer.

As for health recharge… I think it should stay, however I do not think it should recharge instantly when your shields start to recharge. I think it should lag behind. The Elite health recharge system in Reach is pretty much ideal.

I think they should do this in conjunction with reducing the delay of a shield recharge.

With the addition of Sprint the shield delay has had to be lengthen by 2 seconds to help reduce ‘get of of jail free’ scenarios. Which is a lot in game terms. But at the same time Sprint increase player mobility allowing players to reach action quicker, this creates a demand for faster shield recharges because otherwise players are regularly being caught shieldless or weakened after winning encounters. A delayed health recharge keeps the weakened player temporarily on the back foot, giving the attacking player the momentum they deserve in a chase, but at the same time it allows players to get back in the action quicker after winning an encounter.

There needs to be some manner of health system in place for classic gametype remakes. To recreate CE all you need to do is set health recharge to zero and put health packs on the map, to recreate H2/3/4 health system is set it on 4sec delay, 2sec recharge.

I think many people have been to quick to judge the classic health pack system. I mean if you judge it by Reach MM with its poor and sparse pack placement I can very much understand why you didn’t like it. Often there were only 2 per map and they were located all the way back in the bases, none in neutral territory…

But on a good map with good placements a strong health attrition meta game can evolve, it can encourage map movement, it can create momentum swings, create great ‘chase’ gameplay, it can allow player to predict player movement and intersect players before they reach health packs and it can regulate the ‘get out of jail free’ aspect of Halo. I want to at least be able to recreate this in customs.

Health packs punish people for winning a 1v1. You are more then likely going to loose your next one because you don’t have the same level of health as your enemy.

HELL NO! Health packs are extremely annoying and seeing your health flashing red for an hour in Legendary isn’t satisfying. I don’t get the pros it offers, as far as I see it only slows down gameplay and makes you have to look around the map more. And health usually comes hand-in-hand with fall damage, which I absolutely hate. I really didn’t like that in Reach and Halo 2 brought a welcome change at its time.

Well, when you’re out of shields it’s not going to take more than one melee. Most weapons will one-shot you, too. I don’t think the Spartan has enough health for a visible health bar to actually be useful.

Highly doubt it will return.
