Heads up Display

I feel like there can be some changes to the in game HUD in the next Halo. Since I’m not an idea guy I would like to hear everyone else’s opinions in what they would like to see in the next Halo.

When it comes to cosmetics, a lot of things can be changed. Whether or not they’re for the better? We’ll have to see. But considering that the Chief has a cracked Visor in the E3 teaser, maybe something similar to the last mission of Halo: Reach could reappear.

I personally would like the return of the Halo CE(A) HuD. I feel it felt clean and organized, but I feel it also needs the visor designs around the fringes just like Halo 3.

I’m fond of how 343 made the visor in Halo 4. I felt immersed in the character. The weight of the cover and the corners, as I made a high fall, and to see it bounce as I land felt nice. The little things like that add a whole lot to the overall experience for some players.

Not quite sure how balance would work out, but I think customizable HuD layouts, features, and maybe colors and designs would be a nice addition.

Well seeing as how everyone’s HuD uses the same monitors, it wouldn’t really be unbalanced if you were allowed to rearrange everything. It just works better visually for you.

There wouldn’t be any balance issues if you customized your HUD. It has does not affect the other players gameplay wise, but it could be an issue for those who utilize it. because you might just clutter the screen with aesthetics that could impair your sight.

I agree…
it made it look more like you’re playing through Chief’s eyes, and it’s a nice feature

Yeah I like the subtle touches in the HUD in Halo 4.

On the topics of color customization for the HUD, I’ve been hoping they’d add this since Halo 3.

I hope they have this color, assuming they add custom HUD stuff.

I really enjoyed the HUD in 4, potentially updates could be a colour slider (literally pick your own HUD colour) or how about positioning of the major elements (e.g. radar bottom left, move it to top right)?

One could also have toggles to turn off the medals or text stream(s) etc.

The secondary weapon icon should be restored… there’s ton of crap that are actually ‘clutter’ and the secondary weapon icon is definitely not one of them.

I.e. primary weapon icon, useless details

I’d also like to see a return to the clean Reach HUD… non-recharging health doesn’t make a health bar invalid. Having a compass was pretty neat. I liked the AA indicator placement. The only change would be making the blue a little more darker.

I’d also like to point out how annoying it is to find AAs in Halo 4 due to the lack of hologram and the lack of ‘picked up AA’ messages.

Visual callouts that correspond to D-Pad. The callouts promotes teamwork, give a means of communication to mic-less gamers and makes use of dormant buttons. It also gives an opportunity for visually-rich graphic overlays. The standad caveats apply - can’t interfere with your line of site, must not drastically alter core components, etc.

The buttons could be anything, these are just examples:

Up Arrow - enemy spotted
Down Arrow - rally to me
Left Arrow - do not approach
Right Arrow - ord/vehicle available

I’d welcome that option

Right now the D-pad (at least, left and right) are used to switch grenades. There’s simply no space on the controller. They’d have to remove default sprint, return grenade switching to A or whatever button it is on each control scheme. Not that that has anything to do with the HUD.

My biggest problem with the HUD stems from ordnance. When you get ordnance, it’s just hanging out there, in the middle of the screen, until you call it in. I wish you could hide it (really I wish ordnance was gone completely).

I also find the red damage direction indicator to be useless. It’s unnecessary.

Keeping it clean and simple is always better then cluttering it up.

Just thought of this but, you know how the HUD in-game (H4) is always blue, dispite the fact that you might have a red visor? well ehat if the HUD matched it’s color with your visor of choice?

black might throw a wrench in that idea I like it none the less for black I guess they could use purple or dark blue.

I always thought it would be nice to have different huds for different helmets. But Reach really got me thinking about HUD customisation and while it’d be nice, I’m a little against different HUDs and HUD customisation.

Reach’s HUD was initially yellow, but was later switched back to blue. Why? Because the cross hair, radar and so forth became more difficult to read and see in a lot of situations.

The problem is that the HUD needs to be transparent or else players may hide behind stats and radars on another player’s HUD. While it needs to be transparent to avoid that problem, it can’t be too transparent either or else it disappears in the action. On top of that you need a good color that can be transparent but doesn’t disappear.

Apart from Blue I imagine red would be good color for that. However Red is an aggresive color and does sting the eyes a little. Blue is a more soothing color than red and you can stay calmer when playing. I also think it’s part that plasma TV’s used to get static pictures burned into the screen, red was one of those colors.

So while it’d be nice, I think it’s best left alone because it could potentially affect gameplay.

I like purple, but I wouldn’t use it if it made my gaming suffer.

I wouldn’t mind seeing some customization regarding the HUD, if people don’t like it, then they don’t have to change it. Though, if we would be able to customize the HUD, my indecisiveness will kill me.
