Now look I know this is a F2P game that they plan on updating for years to come. I am absolutely okay for the company and shareholders to make money, I understand how this new meta of F2P live service games are. I am okay with a Battle Pass (not so much its xp progression). I am even okay for certain limited cosmetics. I think the esports cosmetics all look dope and plan on getting one myself.
What I am not okay is that they decide to take out a staple feature of the Halo games from the last 15 years in favor to push out their monetary options.
The fact that they are saying that it is high priority for them just irritates me even more, they know we want it but they decided to ignore everyone after the first flight 6 months ago.
They say it is hard to design and implement a career progression system. This is a blatant lie, the only real difficulty in the design of it is the rewards and rank names / emblems. The actual design and implementation of the system is surprisingly easy, I have created progression like systems in the past (not this big of course). Their dilemma is trying to figure out how to balance what they want to be free rewards vs paid. They don’t want to make the free ones better looking so people don’t buy from the store.
It is clear they are trying to bring Halo back into the esports genre. (Absolutely stoked about that.) But they are making some critical errors. Career progression systems keep the casuals playing since they have something to do other then ranked mode. It keeps them invested into the game and in turn gets them interested into the esports side of things. There are exceptions to this (CS:GO and Valorent for example have only ranked progression, but these from the start are catered towards much more competitive players. This is why their esports can strive without a form of Career Progression.)
I am sad, angry, and worried about the future of this game. I was dumbfounded when I found out about the lack of Career Progression.
