Because I found myself last night making a mock-up on Blender, with color-coding and everything, of a map I wanna build. I really hope I can easily translate it to H5 haha
Have you ever done something like this with graph paper or legos or something?
Yeah. You’ll find professional map designers definitely conceptualize on paper before even touching models. It’s so much easier to translate ideas from you head to paper (and faster) and figure things out before starting to build the map to playtest and further refine on.
Not really, just go along with what I think looks good. Not good at trying to visualize a map unless I’m actually in Forge messing around with the blocks.
Nope, never. I jump directly into Forge and start building. There are many more errors and i have to redo a lot once i change something, but it’s my way of working.
Mixed responses, it would seem! Yeah, this planning stage is the best AND worst. It’s fun to flesh a concept out, and I really enjoy playing with elements and layouts to see what would result in the best play.
But at the same time, I got all these ideas for mechanical traps in H5 and I have no idea if they’ll be possible. And that’s the worst part!
I tried it once, but I’m a terrible at drawing directly from a mental image, and the map diagram was incomprehensible. If I still had my legos, I might be tempted to build one there haha.
In the case of H5, it’ll be a while before I even know what the possibilities for building are, anyway; the pieces you have to work with will play a big part in what you attempt to build.
Ive drawn down 1 map that i originally planned for Reach but the forge wasnt up to scratch, same for H4 and H2A So im hoping… the H5 forge will be up for it! My only problems are lack of piece capability, im not able to put down enough pieces to make the map but im hoping because H5 has tunnel like pieces i can save alot of time by using them and in general i can place more pieces so im hoping i can finally make it!
Most times I’ve forged a map there’s only been the idea in my head - nothing on paper or computer. I have a few ideas I want to put into practice now that scripting has new features such as moving stuff from one place to another.
Usually though i just go on forge and make a map and see how it goes… this one is the only one ive planned, ive now got the idea in my head so fingers corssed i can get it done
This is the version on H2A, closest ive been able to get to making it but i used all pieces and still a fair bit off from making it, think i might tweak the map to make it more like a BTB map, maybe a route around the tunnels thats all grass etc

I have a map drawn out on Paper right now as soon as forge drops and I get my permits I will begin to build. I shall call the map Master Lock. After all it will feel like Lockout gameplay on a totally different yet similar map. H2-3 players will feel right at home . If you would like to help build I can send you drawings PM me
I have draw out my maps on paper before. I have an idea for at least 2 maps I want to make in Halo 5, however I have yet to draw them because I want to jump into Forge first and just mess around to get an idea of what I can and cannot do. Then I’ll draw something up. But it definitely helps to have at least a top down view of the map because it keeps you focused on the design and you don’t get sidetracked with doing silly stuff you never planned.
Thanks, its the closest ive got, but its still a mile off of what i want to do… the tunnels made me use alot of pieces, now H5 has more pieces and has things like tunnel type pieces, hopefully i can save a huge amount of pieces using them! So i can finish the map, but we’ll see, fingers crossed
I remember when I was in Basic Combat Training a few years ago, one Sunday when we weren’t doing anything and I was bored out of mind I actually drew up a detailed map for Halo 3. I ended up eventually making it.
It turned out nice, I’d compare it to a rendition of Guardian.
I just put a bunch of stuff everywhere and plan it as I build it, I normally start with a name and build the theme off of it. But I know that legit people make their maps first in SketchUp or Blender.
