Have we seen Let 'Volir before?

Is Let 'Volir the same shipmaster as the one from Halo Evolutions short story The Return? Obviously the galaxy is full of Sangheili so it may seem foolish to think they are the same but there are some similarities to make me think they’re possibly the same. Both are Sangheili shipmates, both in the year 2558, both are still living in their ships with their crew and trying to figure things out and survive. The Return shipmaster was looking for answers to Forerunner mysteries and had no problem torturing an injured human he came across post-covenant war. It wouldn’t be crazy to think he allied himself with Atriox for the sake of his crew and his info led them to the Ark? What do you all think?

Hmm that’s an interesting theory.

Personally I don’t think so, because the said-shipmaster was seemingly allied with Thel 'Vadam (he said at one point “our saviour, the Arbiter, had slain the Prophet of Truth” or something to that effect). He also had a fleet of ships, while Let seemingly has only his Assault Carrier.

While Let 'Volir has NO LOVE for the Swords of Sanghelios, though has no love for it’s Covenant Remnant opposition either.

I still would love to know what happened to the shipmaster in The Return as well as learn of its name. I would also love to know what happened to Thel 'Lodamee (aka the red Elite major in “The Package”).

But overall, to conclude, I believe that the shipmaster and Let are two separate characters.

Actually GrimBrotherOne confirmed that they’re 2 separate characters. It’s interesting that he said this out of all the theories.

As I recall, he didn’t want to hurt that human he found injured in the camp. He wanted to save him, in order to question him.
Collater333 is right, that Shipmasted seemed allied with Arbiter.
Thirdly, the Shipmaster in The Return hated the Brutes.
Finally, I would like to see that Shipmaster again with Arbiter, Rtas 'Vadum and Tul 'Juran. Would be an awesome ally/confederate.

I don’t even really know why people had thought Let 'Volir was the Return shipmaster, they have almost nothing in common.

I think it would be more valid to think that Atriox is the Brute Army Commander from Halo Wars, though I think this was debunked as well. Speaking of which, what ever happened to the Brute Army Commander?

I mainly thought this because they are both Sangheili Shipmasters in the year 2558 looking to do what’s best for their crews and their ships. Also the Kevin Grace connection. He wrote “The Return” and HW2. Also yes, he was intent on saving the human but it was highly suggested he planned to torture him. He says he “still remembers how to make humans talk”, which would indicate his memory is from torturing humans to talk to give intel from the war with humanity. I also assumed he meant Thel was their saviour in that he opened the Sangheili’s eyes to the Prophets manipulation, but that doesn’t necessarily make him a Sword of Sangheilios or even pro-Arbiter. Either way with GrimBrotherOne saying no, that seals it. Though I agree with wondering what the hell happened to Thel Lodamee and the Brute Chieftain from HW, not to mention the Shipmaster from the Return. Mainly him because I’d like to know more on the monitor info he got, which monitor was that? And mainly it was that short story that gave me insight into the post Halo 3 world. I knew the fallout and fighting between the various Sangheili & Brute factions was still going on by 2558. I’m kinda disappointed a lot if the fighting post covenant war was Sangheili in fighting. SOS vs Mdama Covenant. I’d always assumed much if it would be Brute vs Sangheili and I wish we got to see those fights and aspects in halo 4 & 5 as well as the Innies, instead of what we got…

I would like to point out that no one (Outside of 343) knows what the Unidentified Shipmaster’s allegiances are besides his crew.

Well in the first few comics of Halo Escalation, the Brute-Sangheili conflict that was mentioned in The Return was seemingly still very alive in the comic, and in fact was a significantly story point in the comic.

I will say I did not know of the author connection between The Return and HW2.

But yes, I would still love to know what happened to the unnamed shipmaster in The Return, and hope they do bring us back to that because we are approaching that specific point in time. Also, what the frig is his name? =)
