With regards to recent “hate” threads I just wanted to say Halo is not all about ranks.
Halo to me was always just about having fun with friends in multiplayer, experiencing epic moments in campaign/multiplayer, and having a blast in customs games/forge. I remember when my friends would yell -Yoink- at each other in Matchmaking to motivate us to win and get top score of the game. Even if we lost we wouldn’t cry about it, we would just shrug it off and try to win the next game.
I understand that rank means alot but skill should be shown when the odds are against you. Take for example in Reach you are paired up with warrant officers and against some generals and hero’s. You decide to stay and play. You end up carrying the team and beating them, not only do your teammates think highly of you but the other team is embarrased. That feeling is much more gratifying than having a number next to your name.
I look at the changes in Halo 4 and it really shows that 343 wants to revive the Halo fun that I had years ago. I look forward to it and I hope that you guys will learn to overcome the old and embrace the new.
I completely disagree, its not just a number its an achievement and a symbol to show off your skill level. That’s like saying teams in the NFL should play to win, but not keep track of record.

Records mean absolutely nothing when a NFL team chokes in a match and loses to a weaker team. Skill should be measured/shown during a match, not before or after.

Haha, yeah that can feel good. Like once I got into an argument here where the other poster was acting condescending to me and was implying I sucked with the DMR. Probably only 3 hours later I find myself matched up against him in a party of 4 against me and 3 random players. Our team won and he quickly backed out.

We don’t care about a number, we care about the competitive quality of the matchmaking.
Needless to say 343i continues the tradition of ignoring the problem completely and saying they’ve fixed it when they haven’t even addressed the issue in the first place.
> I completely disagree, its not just a number its an achievement and a symbol to show off your skill level. That’s like saying teams in the NFL should play to win, but not keep track of record.
The NFL also has the Super Bowl every year to determine who is the best of the BEST, perhaps we should apply that to a ranking system after all. One team is allowed at maximum rank ONLY, and has to defend that title.
> then stick to your social games, there is absolutely no reason for you to be here. If you dont want to play ranked games, dont. they will be optional!
social…ranked… there is no difference. I’m still the same player but in different playlist paired up with different people. My skill level remains constant…
> then stick to your social games, there is absolutely no reason for you to be here. If you dont want to play ranked games, dont. they will be optional!
The exact same could be said of those looking to play ranked games. Don’t want to play non-ranked Halo? Don’t play it. Since rank seems to be the determining factor, I keep hearing Black Ops 2 is looking for a few players …

Only the second part of my post. Reach ranks do not represent anything other than time invested. It’s very easy to play a lot and never get any better.
It would be great to bring back the multiplayer fun we had during LAN parties with Halo: CE and Halo 2. I feel bad that not everyone had the opportunity to experience Halo in that light. There was nothing better than staying up all night at a friend’s house playing Halo. Those were the good ol’ days.

MM is naturally competitive, there is a winner/loser in every match. What difference does it make by matching people by skill without showing the “skill rank” rather than showing the “skill rank”? None at all
343 is reluctant to release info because none of you can accept the change and reason with it.

Because Halo reach “competitive” used this very system and was so laughably terrible calling it competitive was an insult to the very word.
If you can match guests and people new to Halo, the system doesn’t work. Simply saying “it will match you based on skill” does not in fact guarantee a competitive environment.
If that was the case, all the Browns have to do to get good is say they’re good.

But a game that is fair and even for all the players/teams involved can have ranks. They also have referees to halt cheating as well as drug tests etc.
Reflect that back to Halo online and ranks are meaningless due to network conditions, cheating, regular teams vs. randoms and about 100 other factors that are catered for in “real world sports and ranks”.
MLG or LAN events with referees, teams and leagues are the only place where rank is comparable to NFL for example. You’re not comparing apples with apples mate but better luck next time.

I do recall an MLG player, I think it was Ghandi or something, stating in a video that the MLG circuit is really THE only place that can truly be called competitive Halo. The main focus of the video was LoL and Starcraft 2’s ranking system, wish I could find it again. He boiled it down to, rather bluntly, being the best in matchmaking being first place at the special olympics, and that if players wanted a real competitive experience, they should pony up the scratch and join the circuit. Until then, they are just another group of randoms on matchmaking, just like everyone else.

Until they get beaten by said randoms.
This is half the problem with the Pros in Halo, no grace like the Pros in Starcraft.

Yeah except the only time there would be a guest is not in a competitive playlist so that’s irrelevant. Halo reach’s system doesn’t match you based on your visual rank. your “true skill” rank isn’t visible but there is one and that’s what it uses to match you up. Also when it matches you up in social playlists with guests that’s because social playlists don’t use any kind of parameters other than the ability to connect well. But that again is irrelevant since we’re talking about ranked ones not social so yeah I don’t understand what your getting at.
