Have some respect for Martin O'Donnell, 343.

http://aka.ms/GarethCoker

In the waypoint interview with Halo Infinite composer Gareth Coker about the soundtrack, they refuse to name Martin O’Donnell (the Halo composer everyone knows) and only mention using “legacy scores”

Marty himself made a tweet about it suggesting he is “Thinking about changing my middle name to “Legacy”.”

As a long time Halo fan I am quite shocked how 343/Microsoft is treating the original composer this way. They are clearly using his music for inspiration this time and you should at least name the man when talking about his music.

Also, according to Marty, Microsoft barred people working on Halo 2 Anniversary music from speaking with him, but this may have just been a legal issue as he was with Bungie/just leaving Bungie at the time. Although this new Waypoint post seems to imply something else…

I expect the Waypoint interviews with Curtis etc. to rectify this and show Marty at the very least a "modicum of respect", to quote Halo 2.

And don’t forget about Michael Salvatori!

dont be petty. None of that interview indicates a lack of respect

Calling Marty petty? That’s heresy.

WTF. “Legacy”

HiddenXperia did a good interview with Marty about Halo. He never explicitly said anything, but implied that Microsoft had something against him and avoid all contact with him.
For example, despite the fact that he was free (and friends with the audio team) during the development of the Anniversary games, the audio team were not allowed to ask him for any advice at all when remastering the soundtrack.

It’s likely Microsoft have specifically asked that nobody ever mentions Marty and Michael by name at all.

Edit: Just noting I’m not excusing it but rather explaining why it’s probably happening.

So we’re just gonna ignore how the unhealthy obsession the Halo community has for Marty O’Donnell has completely erased Michael Salvatori from the picture? Alright, sure, it’s all 343’s fault for using the word ‘legacy’.

By the rings! What’s going on with Marty and Microsoft/343?

According to Marty, 343 literally barred composers from speaking to him. It’s not a coincidence that every would be instance of his name was replaced with “legacy” in the blog post. Truly a bizarre way to treat one of the original creators of your franchise.

Pretty sure Marty said it was Microsoft who made that decision not 343.

This right here, he gets no mention at all from the fanbase or, most notably, content creators.

Honestly isn’t a good look for 343 or Microsoft if they’re intentionally not mentioning Marty and Michael’s names when talking about their work. We’re talking about the guys that are responsible for us having the chanting monk’s Halo theme stuck in our heads for nearly 20 years and don’t ever forget H2 & H3’s Unforgotten/Never Forget which is probably the most emotional song I’ve ever heard in a game.

If you’re gonna stand on the shoulders of giants at least show them some respect.

a lot of people just don’t like 343 so they go out of their way to find any tiny slip up to attack them on, don’t get me wrong I think 343 has done a lot of things wrong but I don’t go out of my way to attack them. Seems pointless don’t bite the hand that feeds you

Can I ask what you did when working at ea? Like what games and what you did for them?

Marty pokes fun at everything, he does it in jest (hes said so on some interviews in which they ask if hes taking jabs at stuff). I am saying your the one being petty and trying to defend his name when its not under attack

Lol they forbid his friends working on Halo 2 Anniversary from speaking to him about it. He said himself on his interview with HiddenXperia that felt like a snub. I said that in the OP.

Contrary to popular belief, Halo does not owe Marty anything. Did he make legendary tracks? Absolutely, but his fame grew along with those tracks and those games, he isn’t owed any more than he has already received. There is nothing wrong with referring to the collection of Halo soundtracks as “Halo’s Legacy.” His name does not need to be mentioned every time someone discusses Halo’s soundtracks.

Lol, 343 wouldn’t have jobs at Halo if it wasn’t for Marty. The franchise would be nowhere as big as it was when 343 took over.
