Has the Masterchief changed?

What has happened to the chief? Is this where 343 has been going with since Halo 4? And is that the real reason i hated it? I just re-watched the locke and chief fight and thought… “The chief would not do this.” Fight a fellow UNSC spartan? (cough). Spartan! (cough). I understand the chief loves cortana or cares for her i also understand alot of fans were very angry cortana died and some ill-minded when she came back. My point is Masterchief is a Spartan-ll trained from the ground up to follow orders and be his very best but lately all i see is the chief acting out and having preferences. How? And Why this change in his character? Some one fix the emptiness in my heart.

Yeah, they changed his character drastically and I’m not a fan. They are pushing the fans emotions onto him and I absolutely hate it.

I liked old Chief, Chief who didn’t talk much and always did that what was ordered, Chief who was killing machine and The Demon, Chief who we didn’t know looked like.

He’s changed, but only because he had no reason to be anything other than the stoic hero before. Sure, he had the loss of his fellow Spartans, but their deaths come with the territory. The relationship between Chief and Cortana was unique for him. He connected with her in a much more human way, and as much as ONI would like you to believe otherwise, Spartan-II’s are still human. Of course Chief has been effected the way he has. This is, practically, his first real human relationship he’s had. Of course it’s going to change him. Nothing has acted on him to force him to change up until now.

Of course, that’s the in-universe answer. A real world answer is Bungie specifically made Chief a blank slate so players would put themselves in Chief’s shoes. 343 is going for a more character driven story which requires more characterization that removes the player away from feeling like they are the Chief. Two very different directions.

I really liked halo 4 chief. But halo 5 chief us just awkwardly construed to facilitate the bad plot.

They changed him twice, took him from being an aloof one liner to a fully fleshed out character, and then back to a one liner again. Kinda wish they’d pick one course and then stick with it.

That’s the point. Drilled to be a soldier since he was a child and now he is defying orders. He’s really starting to realize how dirty he’s been done. And he realizes how much pull he actually has

If the player was put into the Chief’s shoes as the way to characterize him, it gives him a weak identity. Its not unique. Just because each Halo player is different doesn’t mean thats the best way to characterize him.
By giving Chief more emotion, connections, and lines in-game, you make his character unique. If he’s a blank slate, he’s essentially just a character without…well…character.

So 343 was going or is going for a chief that has realized he is a human too not just a machine and feels he deserves better?

I think 343 was trying to go for a “Is Chief man or machine?” type of thing in Halo 4, but they more or less dropped that, kicked into an incinerator, and threw it in a landfill with Halo 5.

Poor charactrer writing happend to Master Cheif…117…John :frowning:

Should have stuck with that.

The only form of media in which John has had good character writing has been the books, and maybe Halo 4. His character was awfully written in the first trilogy.

You think so? I always looked at him as a bad#ss! Thats what made such an iconic character in Halo.

agree and love your opinion on the matter but what do you think about Master Chief rejecting Cortana towards the end of the level “The Breaking”? For me I understand why he said no due to the fact that she killed a lot of people by activating the Guardians without no thought for her selfish ideal. My question is if Cortana was so important, why did it seem like it was so easy to say no?

Someone, please remind me to continue the discussion. Overall though, 343’s John-117 is better character, and its done so beautifully in 4.
I can go on how he’s become his own person in halo 5, but I dont have time right now. So do remind me later, because I can explain it.
I dont have time to explain, but I do have time to explain why I dont have time to explain: I need to sleep.

Why would you guys think having a blank slate character is better than a unique, human, and fleshed out character? Chief has development in the first three games , but not near as much as 343s take.

I ask this question all the time. Nobody ever answers me either. :frowning:

They changed chief too much, i agree, but i dont believe 343 will stop here unfortunately.

Oh, his character most certainly has! My thoughts on that can be found, here.
