I just came back from a 6 month Halo break and it´s good to be back. This is not a complaint thread.
Did 343, at some point, change the ranking system since spring of 2016? I´ve noticed many (and I do mean many) players who are ranked Onyx in (for example) Slayer or Arena that show all the signs of being a Gold or Platinum player. They have a decently sized negative K/D (account total) and when watching them play they are obviously average in skill. In the games where they end up in my team or the other team, they are the obvious outlier and pull something like 1 kill and 15 deaths while the 7 other players are even (with expected variances). Isn´t Onyx supposed to be the top tier? I remember back in the 1-50 system (H2, H3) you would never see a player with a negative K/D (account total) on ranks above 30-40.
Now, I know people will accuse me of measuring skill by K/D, but I don´t. K/D is in my opinion a useful rule of thumb to assess how good a player is, but of course it´s not everything. I have watched many of them play and can say for certain they are no more than averagely skilled players.
These players obviously don´t belong in Onyx and they ruin many (yes, many) games competitiveness. What happened?
Those players may in-fact be regions away from the server, remember alot of the regions now resort to Expanded quite a bit… And no, I believe they simply opened up division deranking…
(1) What does “regions away from the server” have to do with players having ranks way above their demonstrated skill? (2) I don´t search expanded.
Op as far as im concerned the ranking system doesn’t represent skill properly… Really what it shows is who is closer to the server or who gets lucky connecting to the correct server. With the current system that is in place there is no rhyme or reasoning to this… H5 in my mind will never represent any true skill the way it is currently until they get a better grip on there servers. The way the game is right now its first priority is getting you into the game the quickest. That means connection is going to take a back seat. And when that happens all bets are off of ever truly knowing who or what player actually has skill. Oh and btw don’t let those search preferences fool you. We have no idea what really that system does or what 343i says it does. And again that system in itself is broken.
Zippy.

Hmm don’t search expanded… cool answer for an overbearing region-large player base… What about Oceania, the player base is already quite small so I’d rather find a game than let my “game” search constantly and not find anything within the timeframe I have… We have to wait hours for a balanced match, with still questionable connection to the servers.

Again, tell me how that explains why many players have ranks way above their skill level.

They have ranks above their skill level due to “easy” wins… at a higher echelon of play, teams and players learn to “-Yoink!-” their advantages and really dominate over enemies weaknesses; well imagine two equally matched and skilled teams yet the only difference is the connection, latency and shot registration, the team with connection priority will in most cases, win the match due to the fact that they have one more advantage than the other… Does this make sense?
Being 1 - 2 shots behind in a fight, due to ping and latent registration, always puts non-server host region players at a disadvantage, thus a lot of American/European (or highly populated regions) win a lot more fights under this circumstance, and thus based of wins/losses rank up easily and shouldn’t be classified as Onyx’ based off their skill levels… our Diamonds, are your Onyx etc… Putting it bluntly, 343 Industries made a mistake by opening up divisions, at least at non division deranking or checkpoints, the “false” Onyx’ players were all diluted at 1500, while the better players could at least progress.

This is exactly correct, proximity to servers has quite a significant value on winning and losing, I believe true skill is judged by LAN events which have private server support.
343 Industries and Halo really need to invest in a cross-connection basis to support more connection, they either need to allow selectable options like Peer 2 Peer or Dedicated when you host private lobbies like Custom Games, Solo/Split-Screen Campaign and Forge which do not require a “constant online connection” and risk disconnection due to server issues. While when competing in Custom Games or playing matchmaking are always Dedicated Servers.

This. I have to play on expanded now and I can’t make it past diamond. People getting an extra 1-2 shots at me, makes a huge difference and if I do poorly, I feel bad for my team.
I try and avoid arena now.
I think it is still broken. I saw that a buddy of mine had won 3 FFA games with a decent K/D and get Onyx so I decided to go for it… I won 6/10 matches, and the ones I didn’t I was close, but I ended up as Plat 6… you can say I was annoyed and confused to high Hell and back. Even after a year I still don’t understand Halo 5’s ranking.
