I haven’t read the books in years but my friend seemed to think that Chief and Linda had a thing for each other.
Is that true? Is it simply implied?
Also do you think 343 would ever play with that? I mean I did chuckle a little bit when Linda steps protectively in front of Chief when they met Cortana; just thinking about what my mate said.
Can we not? Read up on the Spartan-II’s and your answer lies there. I’m really tired of people creating things like gender-bends, and relationships in fan fictions that were never to be.

Lol I’ll take that as a no.
As opposed to the fact Chiefs in love with his AI companion atm? I do have to question your reasoning on that.
Sure kiddo… Let’s let John, Linda, & Kelly get in on. After all, it’s not like they’re brothers & sisters or what not. Oh wait. Yes they are. Though not by blood, they are brothers & sisters. This goes for every single Spartan II & even somewhat the Spartan III’s.
Giggity giggity… Alright!
So it’s weird that he would develop feelings for the people he lives with for so long. But perfectly alright that he gets attached to his AI?
As I said Iam just asking about something a friend mentioned and wondered if there was anything to it. If there isn’t then that’s fine. But I do find it odd that people consider it so outrageous a notion. Especially considering how 343 is arguably doing something very fan servicey by shipping Chief and Cortana.

Dude, Chief is a Spartan II and Cortana is an AI, if 343i brought back Cortana as some sort of human or cyborg, and started dating Chief, I would shoot myself. There will never be a love story between Chief, read the books and understand the lore.
Spartans have zero -Yoink!- drive. just saying

no he thought one of them had beautiful eyes it ends there. SII have no -Yoink!- drive so any relationship would be friends only. read a book
They are like family so that would be kind of weird haha

Actually the only thing that is canon is that the Spartan-IIs’ catalytic thyroid implant had a risk of suppressing their -Yoink!- drives. Ergo such a side effect was not guaranteed to happen or be necessarily permanent. And either way this in no way effects their ability to form lasting emotional bonds, or have a desire for things like companionship and romance. We know for a fact that several Sprartan-IIs have had relationships (both successful and unsuccessful) with each other and other people - namely Margaret-053, Otto-031, Victor-101, Randall-037, and Maria-062. Fred-104 even shows some interest in Veta Lopis in ‘Last Light’.
As far as the Chief goes, there are plenty of moments in canon that at least support a potential for deeper feelings between himself and Kelly-087 - who is his closest friend - but nothing has ever been confirmed. Still, here’s a list if you need it:
The Fall of Reach: The prologue establishing Kelly as John’s partner and close friend on Blue Team (a trend that would continue throughout the book and in later fiction for the majority of Blue Team’s missions - from Victoria to Sigma Octanus IV). John being enamored by Kelly’s speed on the second day of Spartan training. John offering to be the rabbit in Kelly’s place during a wilderness training exercise. John taking note of Kelly’s beauty (which he never does in regards to anyone else before or since). The two of them having a playful conversation during their first official mission. Multiple instances of ambient physical contact. Supporting each other in the face of Sam’s death. John picking up on Kelly’s smallest signs of worry when RED FLAG is scrubbed. Kelly offering to lead the dangerous space-op in John’s place.
*Fall of Reach - Comic Adaptation: Kelly appearing as a prominent figure in John’s dreams. More instances of playful banter and poignant moments of closeness between the two. (*The comic obviously is not a 100% faithful adaption of the original book - but the fact that it does still take the time to build up John and Kelly’s relationship even in this condensed version of the story is something to be noted.)
First Strike: John returns to Reach strictly to find out if any of his Spartans are alive, in spite of the extreme tactical risk. His reunion with Kelly culminates in a uniquely intimate 'Spartan smile’. Afterwards he makes a last-ditch attempt to save her life when she is severely injured by Hunters - by putting himself in a completely prone an vulnerable position that would’ve lead to his own death as well should the Hunters have fired again. Most importantly, he is willing to make that sacrifice for her in spite of the fact that Dr. Halsey and Admiral Whitcomb (two extremely important people) were in their party and still in need of protection. He also continues to further prioritize Kelly’s safety and the need to get her medical attention above all else during their escape from Covenant forces. And after Dr. Halsey absconds with Kelly in a stolen spaceship, John is notably worried about her.
Ghosts of Onyx: Kelly’s primary question (second only to an inquiry about their current location) after regaining consciousness on Dr. Halsey’s ship is whether or not John knows knows where she is and what is going on. And later, after being reunited with Fred and Linda, she openly asks the others if they think John is alright.
Glasslands: Kelly has a conversation with Dr. Halsey where she reveals her worry over whether or not John is alive and well. Chief Mendez notes how this is something that really must be weighing heavily on Kelly’s mind for her to talk about it without being prompted first.
Halo Evolutions: John thinking about Kelly and how she would be impressed with how fast he sprinted over an open battlefield in New Mombasa (this is also the only time in the whole book when another Spartan-II from Blue Team is referenced by name).
Halo Legends: John desperately calls out to Kelly when she sacrifices her own momentum to get him onto the Covenant ship when floating out in space, and afterward he noticeably pauses and contemplates the possibility of just having lost her (something he did not do for Solomon, Arthur, or Fred).
Halo Escalation: Kelly and John immediately fall back into their positions as Blue-One and Blue-Two. And Fred, who technically should be in charge, does not even attempt to contest this and literally takes a backseat to the pair. A point is also made to show that Kelly specifically is in danger before John attacks the Didact with a combat knife.
Other: Kelly’s official character biography on Halo Waypoint takes the time to note her close relationship to John (personal and working) no less than 3 times. Them being each other’s closest friend was also included in a character summary that was published in Game Informer’s exclusive coverage on 'Halo 5’ - the information for which was provided directly by 343 Industries.
I kinda interpreted First Strike as implying that John may have had a subconscious thing for Linda during boot camp. While he’s arguably closer to Kelly, that might actually mean he’s less likely to ever be in a relationship with her (not that there’s any chance as is with either of them currently). Most people find the swap from close friend to significant other very, very difficult, if not impossible or unthinkable.
In contrast to his sibling-like relationship with Kelly, John’s early memories shown in FS almost make it seem like he has a sort of reverence to Linda, frequently saying that she’s the strongest Spartan and complementing her in other ways. He also discusses her physical appearance more than he does with any other character.
I’m not saying that John and Linda are or were a thing. I’m just saying that I interpreted him as having a bit of a crush on her as a child. Given that, contrary to what some believe, the SII’s are Human, and it was before augmentations, it’s not impossible that John may have had a thing for redheads.
The Spartans thought of each other as siblings. So, probably not.

The Chief and Cortana loved each other but they were never “I <3 you” ‘in love’. Just a very close bond.
There’s no canon backing for anything beyond normal friendship between John and Linda. There is some significant evidence that could point to Kelly being closer to John than just friends and she is noted to be John’s closest friend. Linda steps forward in the final cutscene to warn John of danger. She’s a scout and that’s her job.

He says that her appearance is unique, not beautiful. That’s Kelly that he refers to as beautiful. Also they have a possibly suppressed -Yoink!- drive but -Yoink!- drive is not love.
As many have said, they are family. That would just be weird. How about more evolution of Fred and Veta Lopis? It would be an interesting new story to catch up on the S-III’s and Veta.
No, They make this clear in Spartan Ops and in the books, the SII’s were breed to Kill, Fight and Obey Orders. In the Fall of Reach Series, They give Kelly and Sam this hint at a closer relationship, but in the books, No, there fam. The animated series Almost goes against the books same with Halo Reach.
Although Reach is looked at from a different point of view of Spartans, You were SIII’s not SII’s

Okay being in love is not the same as wanting to have -Yoink!- with them. But if you’re really going to look at Halo 3, 4 and 5 wilfully ignoring what’s pretty clearly being presented as a love story then you’re kind of in denial.
Your and my own opinions on that are irrelevant, it’s clearly what they are doing.
Guys, he’s just asking a question, there’s no need to so condecending just because you know something he doesn’t.
I’m all about Fred getting him some Veta Lopis, but with the bond the Cheif and Cortana have, I don’t think that John getting with another spartan is going to do the galaxy any favours right now, haha!
