Has John-117's Luck Finally Ran Out?

For those of you who have not played Halo 4’s campaign, I’ll put this in spoilers.

In Halo 4’s ending, The Didact is stopped by Chief, who sacrifices himself to destroy the Composer. He survives, But at a great cost- Cortana dies soon after saying goodbye. Why was this moment so impact? Because we saw Chief fail. Luck was always on his side when he needed it most. He was able to overcome almost any situation by pure fate and his combat proficiency. But loss is so much more sour when we have become used to the sweet taste of victory. While Chief was able to save the day, he was unable to kill the Didact and ensure the survival of almost everyone. New Phoenix wasn’t the only thing that fell that day- Chief’s confidence- and our confidence in him- to save the day, to get everyone out alive, also fell.

For those of you who have not seen the new issue of Escalation, the following will be in spoiler tags.

In Escalation, Chief is unable to stop the Didact from getting the “composer’s forge” and a Halo ring. The Didact almost kills Kelly, and crushes Chief’s helmet.Chief seems to be unable to “save the day” like he was used to, and I feel that 343i would be foolish to miss out on this type of characterization. However, do you think Chief’s luck is running out?

yes

I’d say his luck ran out when he was chosen for the Spartan program…

In all seriousness, I’m sure that this is a theme that 343 will explore in future titles. I’m interested to see how he manages without Cortana, and I hope he gets a glimmer of hope that she could possibly be revived.

Fate has always backed the Chief. That is Obvious throughout his actions.

I don’t think his Luck will ever truly run out. He’s the Hercules of the Halo Universe.

Even Hercules was killed. Not to mention accidentally murdered his family.

I don’t think that his luck has run out or will ever run out for that matter

I think his luck has led him to this particular point for a reason.

I wouldn’t draw any conclusions from the “Next 72 Hours” arc in Halo: Escalation. Obviously the Chief stops the Didact seeing as how Earth and humanity as a whole wasn’t wiped out in a Halo (possibly Composer infused) firing since Spartan Ops picks up 6 months later and no word of it is ever mentioned.

Makes me curious though what happens to Installation 03… if John blows it up it would be the third Halo he blows up… hehe Installation 03, third blown up Halo. Considering the ease to blow them up it really makes you wonder how the Flood failed to take out even 1 Halo, pretty much crippling the Forerunner their plans.
