According to Halo Nation, Halo 4 was confirmed to take place in 2553 along with other things like returning vehicles and what not in the Nov. issue of OXM. Can anyone confirm this?..perhaps give a more in depth analyses?
Don’t EVER believe Halo Nation, it is poorly and unregularly edited. The only way the game could be set in 2553 (or at least partially) is if there is a split campaign- one with the Chief and one set a number of years before. MC and Cortana were shown to be still drifting in the FUD by 2556 in Halo Legends.

I don’t remember it saying 2556?? well that is awesome! that probably explains his armor upgrades then.

I never said I did. I’m just trying to get a better idea of this since I havent read any of the latest OXM issues.

We know it was 2556 because Cortana was created in 2549. Cortana states in Legends that she has been around for seven years at the beginning of Origins. That gives us 2556.
As for the new armor: the only reason the Chief suddenly woke up in new armor is because 343 wanted to show off what they were thinking for the Chief’s new look. The Announcement trailer is non-canon. When the Chief wakes up in the actual game, he will have the same old MK. VI from Halo 3, and then may receive new armor after the first level or two or something. Think Mass Effect 2.
I do recall an interview with Frank 'O Connor talking about the trailer and what it holds for fans. He had said that Master Chiefs armor was different for two main reasons being that:
A) It was just 343i way of interpretating his look, has each game before has slightly tweaked the look of his armor.
B) He also stated that “There’s some story behind his new look…There are specific reasons why he looks the way he does and why some of his behaviors have changed. We’ll see in good time.”
It appears that they are doing some major hinting at a possibility of Chief not being asleep for the entire duration of time between Halo 3 and 4.

Well Frankie has said before in interviews that “A few years has passed” since Halo 3, so it definitely can’t be in 2553. We can tell this already by seeing that Origins is in 2556, as well as the fact that in Glasslands it states that the Infinity hasn’t been launched yet.
I have a feeling that it’ll take place in around 2556-2557ish.
