Has 343i commented on the misleading marketing?

First off, I don’t want this turning into a flame thread to each other. People have different opinions. Mine is this: this game, while fun at times, is easily the worst one in the series. I enjoy playing it, but the story is bad in my opinion and it just doesn’t feel like Halo like the past ones did. But all that aside, I’ve been looking around and I want to know if anyone at 343i has commented on the misleading campaign. I don’t care if it is them telling the truth (which is very doubtful) or lying to cover their butts (more likely) but any comment would be nice because right now it feels like 343i is ignoring the problems out of spite.

Simple Answer: Frank O’connor said something along the lines of “you guys just don’t understand subtlety and nuance.”

Long Answer: I’m sure Halsey will be here soon.

“Certainly a lot of our younger players are going to struggle with that subtlety, that nuance, because they’re expecting Darth Vader.”
I think this is what you are referring to.

Which is BS because even Darth Vader had depth to his character. Hate them or love them, the prequels actually helped give depth to Darth Vader’s character. I can’t say there really is much depth to Cortana’s ideology other than “War is bad m’kay! So we gotta stop you guys from killin’ each other, m’kay! So, to do that, we’re gonna use these big machines to force you to stop killin’ each other, m’kay!” Even if you can get depth from that, there is no excusing the lack of depth from the Warden Eternal.

My guess is that 343 had very little to do with the actual marketing.

Meanwhile we have ridiculous over the top villains like the Didact & Warden Eternal. Can’t believe he has the balls to say that.

I think the only depth, that I can think of, comes from the whole “Creator vs. Created” narrative. Meaning; Cortana in Halo 4 wanted Chief to find out which one of them was the machine. Problem is, Halo 5 didn’t touch on this at all.

We aren’t looking for a “Darth Vader” as he put it. At least I’m not. I don’t mind an antagonist who the player can sympathize with. But it’s just so cheesy how they did it.

“Cortana is dead!”
“No, she’s really dead.”
“We mean it.”
“GOTCHA HAHAHAHA COOL PLOT TWIST RIGHT???”

It just seemed so… dull. It wasn’t what I expect from a Halo title. I wanted the deeper issues of humanities possible ascendance to the Mantle explored. I wanted the Flood to test the now war-torn galaxy. There’s just so many better things they could have done. But they chose a fan-favorite character, “killed her,” and just made her the bad guy. That’s it. There isn’t any deeper meaning behind that. It’s so on-the-surface and basic.

Then of course the Warden, who is a badass character who they completely ignored and underdeveloped to the point of comedy. For a highly-intelligent keeper of the Domain who is near Omnipresent and invincible, he sure does feel very underwhelming and lacking any depth at all.

Mp is halo

This made me lol so hard, because you know the moment Halsey posts here he’s gonna link to one of his posts that has so much text it takes three replies from him to get through it all.

It’s almost ironic how much waypoint echos his attitude towards criticism. Eh, who am I kidding… Frank is way more receptive.

This made me spit soda out from laughing so hard. But ya gotta admit Halsey’s points are always well thought out and on point.

When will you people get it through your heads that 343i doesn’t do the advertisements. They give a basic plot to Microsoft’s team, who in turn blow everything out of proportion. Like say Fred got shot and it gave him a gash on his armour or whatever. Shot doesn’t even wound him. The Microsoft team will take that and spin it into this elaborate story line where Fred sacrifices himself and is fatally wounded. That’s what they did with the Locke and Chief fight. They made is seem like an ancient rivalry that would be the end of one of them. Their job is to get people to buy the game. That’s what the ad team is paid for. I’ve also heard that 343i has expressed (They can’t really outright say it about Microsoft however) their discontent for the way the trailers were done.

343 are actually mad at Microsoft for the marketing.

What you said about the disconnect between 343 & the ad team sounds plausible, and I hope you’re right. But I also though that part of the point of having 343, as opposed to just the “Microsoft Games Halo Group”, was to ensure that stuff like that DIDN’T happen.
I sincerely hope that they, 343 and Microsoft, have learned their lesson. The ads for Halo 3 were great. The ads for Halo Reach were great. The ads for Halo 4 were good. The ads for Halo 5…yeah. The ads for Halo 6 need to be on point, that’s for sure.

Maybe 343i shouldn’t have made such a terrible story then. The marketing was 100x better than the final game.

It’s like getting mad at somebody for making you look bad when you only work to the minimum requirements, while they go above and beyond.

Can’t find it right now but it’s true. It’s fine if you don’t believe me

How would they know that the made a bad story? Yes the marketing was 1000x better than the game but that always happenes. Halo 3’s marketing was better than the game same with 4 and Reach

They responded by removing those 2 trailers (All Hail, The Cost). It’s their attempt to do damage control. When Halo 6 comes out they’ll just sweep it under the rug. (MCC end result)

Basically this. Frank O’Connor in clever language called all the fans of Halo lore morons in a time article. While completely ignoring the fact they made a huge writing change halfway through development. I feel that had more to do with it than anything.
