Contrary to popular belief, boss fights aren’t new to Halo at all. If we take a step back we can remember Warzone Firefight from Halo 5. One thing about those fights was how bland they were, the battle with Jul Mdama or any extra opponents that were 'mini-bosses had no extra mechanics than any other. Jul Mdama fought like a basic sword elite, the hunters fought like hunters, the AI was all the same. However, in the IGN article about Jega R’domnai, they say the AI is unique to him and that he fights with his own cunning. Has 343 fixed bossfights?
I imagine it will all depend on the difficulty you play at.
At the same time I imagine Jega just has his own fighting style that different from everything we’ve seen from Covenant/Banished battle Tactics.
Boss fight overall though who knows have to wait till December to find out proper.
If they take notes from Destiny on how to make an interesting FPS boss fight, then they’ll be well off. Destiny may have had a shaky start with bosses just being oversized bullet sponges, but eventually they cracked the code and now there are tons of unique and mechanically interesting bosses throughout the game.
Boss Fights in Halo are always an interesting point of contention.
What I really don’t want to see is bullet sponges like Warden in Infinite.
Boss fights still need to nail that 30 seconds of fun mantra, with Mini-boss fights like Hunters in CE through 3.
Lol well hopefully not like the fanatic, one of the most annoying and worse boss fights now.
I think the comparison to WZ is very different, the mini-bosses and bosses were and addition to the map, not the main enemy, at least 30% of my matches we didn’t even care about bosses, just a couple of the first to get the req system high enough to get wraiths and wasps.
I think they are more like the boss on H3, a remember fighting a Brute and guilty spark. H5, the boring warden (I mean the first fight was fun but after that, meh), and so on.
but yeah, let’s hope for different mechanics for the boss, different armor, and my oh my, a crossover with other space games
Like it has previously been stated in this thread. Boss fights aren’t a new phenomenon to Halo. The initial concept of boss fights can probably be viewed as fights against higher class enemies in Halo CE like the introduction to Hunters and some fights against Gold Elites.
However, these instances of boss fights in Halo CE are just borderline cases which may fall outside the definition of boss fights dependent on how you define a boss fight. When it comes to more obvious examples of boss fights, a definite candidate are the following 3 boss fights in Halo 2.
- Heretic Leader (Oracle)
- Prophet of Regret (Regret)
- Tartarus (The Great Journey)
In addition to the 3 boss fights in Halo 2, the successor Halo 3 did also feature a boss fight against 343 Duty Spark (Halo). Furthermore, two other obvious examples of boss fights in Halo are the fight against the Field Marshall in Halo Reach (Pillar of Autumn) and the quick time event boss fight against Didact in Halo 4 (Midnight).
When it comes to Halo 5. There the most clear examples of boss fight are the 7 Warden fights distributed across the following mission.
- Osiris (1 Warden + 1 Giant Knight)
Eastern Egg - Unconfirmed (1 Warden)
- Reunion (1 Warden)
- Battle of Sunaion (1 Warden)
- Genesis 1 (1 Warden)
- Genesis 2 (2 Wardens)
- The Breaking (3 Wardens)
Finally, there do also exist few additional instances that can be argued to be boss fights like the Scarab fights in Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST, Litch fight in Halo 4 and the Kraken fight in Halo 5.
To summarize it all, boss fights is definitely not a new concept to Halo and there exist many obvious examples of boss fights and few instances where it’s possible to argue that it’s a boss fight.
I think yall should take a look at some of the topics hidden experia has shown about halo infinite. according to some official information the bosses are supposed to have their own AI and looks. Essentially they want to make these encounters feel unique. Hopefully 343 delivers in this department.
I cannot put links here but his most recent video covered some details about one of them.
I hope so, nothing makes bosses more frustrating than taking an uninteresting character and just amping the damage resistance to 99% or adding some cheep regen ability. Honestly, I’m my opinion, bosses are just a bad attempt to “mix up the game play”.
Give me overwhelming enemies, not a single overpowered one. I’m not expecting to find much enjoyment with these boss fights.
I’m not terribly excited about the bossfights. The idea of every major story mission ending with a fight with a brute or elite with for some inexplicable reason 100x the health of an ordinary enemy with an ugly health bar floating above them just because they’re labeled as a “spartan killer”? Lol ok.
Idk it just doesn’t feel organic to me in terms of game design. I like the canon possibilities of these higher up enemies who get to show off a bit more individuality, it’s a nice way of differentiating the Banished hierarchy from the Covenant’s. But the way they’re seemingly being implemented as typical potentially bullet-spongey bosses doesn’t feel especially Halo.
I hope they surprise us at least with these battles throwing them at us when we least expect them as opposed to them being heavily foreshadowed every time and always at the end of a mission etc.
