Happy 17th Birthday to the Halo Universe!

’The Fall of Reach’ by Eric Nylund was published on October 30th, 2001.

This marked the premier of Halo as a franchise & fictional universe as we know it…

I played ‘Halo: Combat Evolved’ at a friend’s house when I was still a teen, and really enjoyed it. My friend then told me about the game’s tie-in novel and how it gave a lot of really great context to the setting and characters. So naturally I checked it out. And honestly, as fun as the game itself was, it was the story that was started in this book and the characters in it that has kept me coming back to Halo for well over a decade now.

I love Blue Team, Chief Mendez, Dr. Halsey, Captain Keyes…and I will always treasure how their struggles and losses and triumphs have stuck with me and been an inspiration in my personal and creative endeavors.

…What was your first Halo experience/memory/etc?

I played through the first mission of Halo Christmas day when I got it 2001. I stopped playing so I could play that stupid Sega Racer game that launched with the Xbox instead. I ended up realizing what a gem this game really was over the next few weeks/ months then had to have more. My earliest feelings with Halo 1 at that time was just genuine intrigue, I really wanted to understand the world it was set in because its presentation was just sovisually interesting (to my 8-year-old self) Once I picked up and read The Fall of Reach, it was all over and I was pretty much in love with the universe ever since (Minus a few comics and Halo 5).
