Hand to hand combat

If a hand to hand combat system were added, how would you like to see it done?
For example, you could spawn without weapons in certain game modes and when you don’t have any weapon equipped you throw punches/kicks/block/etc until you find a weapon
This idea is interesting to me, since spartans are deadly with more than just firearms. I don’t know how well it would work in-game, but i’d like to hear any similar ideas from the community. How in depth would you want it to be? Should there be an option to choose it over your currently equipped weapon in close quarters?

I’ve always found first person melee in games to be underwhelming and feeling quite awkward.

I love fighting games, but they just don’t lend themselves well to a larger 3D environment and I wish there was a good way of implementing it better. Some of the anime games have made 3D battles fresh but even they are completely basic when compared to a solid 2D fighter.

If you want to fight as a Spartan you should give Dead or Alive 4 a go haha.

What about different melee animations? If there were more options it could make melee opportunities feel more varied. I think spawning without a weapon will never work though as anyone with a weapon would absolutely shred you and the spawn trap would be brutal. It’s bad enough with AR starts.

I’d say what makes the most sense to add beyond the existing melee button would be ways to 1, Block or 2, Dodge – That said, a potential issue arises on how that’s implemented… for example, would a dodge ability be much different from the thruster’s in Halo 5?

overall I don’t think a lack of hand-to-hand combat is necessarily a problem – I think I’d prefer melee to remain weapon-based, like through the sword or hammer

I think this is not a good idea, I prefer to continue using weapons to fight in halo, if I want to fight hand to hand I can go to a fighting game. this is just my opinion. :wink:

I agree, I don’t think it would be a good addition to a normal halo game, but I think what has me interested in it is Halo 5’s lackluster fight between Locke and Chief lol

I’d like to see a knife utilization during combat. Like a button to switch to knife only, where you basically have slightly extended melee range but it still takes two hits to kill. Two knife attacks hitting each other will parry like in Halo 3. That’d be cool, would offer more customization too

As interesting of an idea this poses I don’t think it would be implemented well. Fighting games are It’s own genre for a reason, it has to be the focus of the game to make it enjoyable and not just an annoyance. Plus with Halo being first person I think more people would just think it looks/feels awkward.

It could be cool if they whip out a knife when they are out of ammo or something, but I doubt it is a huge priority, though I wish they would have some medals for Melee sprees like how they have for sticky and sword.

Funny enough in Halo CE we had a game type called “bare fist brawling in the pit”, which was basically spawning with a plasma pistol and only being allowed to punch each other in the pit of Hang em High. For a splitscreen fun game that was enough, because if someone broke the rule the brawl went from the game to the couch ^_^.

In all honesty halo is a FPS and there will probably be enough custom games with brawl variations but I really don’t think it needs design support with abilities or being able to switch to your knife. Just make a game type with swords and adjust the melee damage in that case.

If it had to be in game I’d just like it to be a combat knife when out of ammo with a melee button and fire button animation.
