Hammer swing damage distance too far

It won’t let me post the clip or the picture because it says I am a new user but I was no shields and got killed from a hammer swing maybe 2 body lengths away in game.

Well you had no shields, I’m okay with the range now as iv gotten use to it but at the start I was shocked at the distance.

I would say the height is abit stupid, cant even grapple away as it hits just as high.

Also been killed when I was behind the hammer guy, gonna guess that was latency though

I get it but I really wish I could post the pic, it is insane to see. If it can kill me no shields at this distance that means it is doing damage which is just wrong. It shouldn’t have better range than any of the guns.

Well any gun has infinite range but it is a shock to the system have to remember you’re very weak without shields.

Also latency can be pretty bad, not sure if this is servers or crossplay etc. But iv experienced alot of questionable things from hitting people multiple times with an energy sword or shot through walls

Yea I just don’t understand, because I think it still takes 2 BR shots when no shield. I have also experienced the being shot while around a corner and the missed sword swings.

This is what my issue with the hammer has been.
The latency can really throw off what you think it’s optimal range is.

At times it’s like that scene from MP Holy Grail where Lancelot is running at the wedding party for 3 cuts, and then all of a sudden he’s right there.

Lol, that’s a hilarious comparison.

Nah I like the range but slower swing more than old hammer. Makes it feel more unique from the sword.

It feels like the Hammer has a sweet spot.

Not too close but not too far. Maybe I just suck at the in-your-face swings but I’ve had a lot of luck when people are just outside melee-lunge range.

edit; I also think the width of the swing is larger? I’ve hit people completely off my screen to my left and right and I tend to use a higher FOV.

The hammer is great as it is.

Its range is pretty ridiculous when a person has full shields, is a good bit away from the physical distance of the hammer swing and you can still be killed. Nothing can really counter it at that distance except the sword.

Speaking of the sword, there is nothing to counter that at all (unless you get lucky with the skewer, are shooting from a distance, and sometimes if shields are already down).

The Gravity Hammer is a melee weapon that more or less creates an explosion upon impact. It has a bit of range. It’s always worked that way. The Sword also has a lunge distance, so a technical “range” to it.

That’s the point of melee weapons, though. They do a huge amount of damage, but are only viable at near-melee range. The counter to a melee weapon is to just gun them down from a distance. It’s not that hard.

I kid you not “near melee range” does not even begin to come close to how far I was away when I died from the hammer swing. Imagine maybe the length of a warthog in game from the spot where the hammer struck the ground and it still got me. To me that is too far. The sword nor the hammer have ever had that kind of range.

Yea go rewatch a game in theater, there is essentially a cone shaped blast that comes off the hammer and I think that I what makes it seem like a large range for the weapon.

Whether it’s hard or not is situational. The current radar isn’t that big when factoring in sprint (haven’t measured it to other halo games), I’ve found that usually if you get within radar distance with the sword then the sword persons wins most of the time.

My comments to the sword are from being on both sides of the fence, so to speak. I’ve used a whole sword’s energy without dying multiple times and taken a squad of 2-3 out with little risk, whereas at least having a shotgun in the game that can one shot kill at point blank can keep the sword in check without having to change the sword.

Back to the gravity hammer though, it mostly seems to kill or do nothing most of the time. And it seems strange if you hit someone in the small area in between then the “explosion” doesn’t collide and push the player(s) much like it always has.

I think dialing the kill range back a little to expand the shield damage/push zone would make it better. It wouldn’t need to be adjusted by a lot, nor would the physics need to be as floaty as halo 3, but something along those lines would put the hammer in a really good spot.
