I was recently re-watching spartan ops animated shorts and started wondering. Why did Halsey lose her arm in the first place? Palmer shot her in the shoulder and then Jul cut off her ENTIRE left arm for no reason. I don’t understand why they couldn’t just field-dress the wound and call it a day. I do kinda understand why she doesn’t have a replacement. She has been held captive by Jul and after she was rescued, she didn’t have the resources or the time to get a replacement arm. But why did she loose it in the first place?
If I had to venture a guess ( and it’s a guess ) the damage to the shoulder/arm was to extensive to save the arm. Plus I believe it was to be a plot point for her to hate the UNSC for taking her arm.
Jul has probably zero understanding of human anatomy, coupled with the fact that most Elites do not believe in medics there were none who could have treated her.

This. Halsey would have received minimal medical attention in the care of the Elites, even if they believed a human didn’t require honor and gotten her a medic.

Well, it could have been a power play an attempt to show that he was in control of her and this ideally make her fear him enough to do what he wanted her to do.
I believe that Jul and his contingent have a lack of knowledge of human anatomy and how to medically treat humans. That, and his distaste for humans in general probably led to him thinking the quickest and easiest thing to do would be to amputate her arm and cauterize the stump. Had she been given to human medical personnel, she probably would have not had to lose the arm.
In-Universe Reason? Probably retribution by Jul and/or a lack of knowledge on treating human injuries. Out-of-Universe Reason? Brian Reed doesn’t have a high opinion of Halsey and seemingly did it for -Yoink- and giggles. He did say how it would make her comment on getting revenge ambiguous as to whether she meant Jul or the UNSC, but that line never went anywhere.

Its possible that the shot hit a major artery, but I think that some of it was Jul expressing rage at Halsey since she had just thrown half of the janus key to majestic
I think the same
I also like to think that it got sold in the Star Wars black market!
If they tied up her arm to stop the bleeding, it would obviously lead to lack of sufficient blood flow to the rest of the arm, causing it to effectively die.
If for some reason it was left tied for too long, such as Halsey passing out for an extended period of time and the Elites not have a blind clue of what to do, it may have been nessessary to remove the dead arm.

This only happens when it got cutoff by an lightsaber.
Let’s stop for a moment and consider what a round from an M6H would do to an arm

Lol I suppose!
It’s a mix of Jul not quite knowing what to do, an MGH pistol hitting VERY hard, and probably extensive bleeding

Indeed. A large caliber round hitting the shoulder joint? The joint shatters and the pieces blow out the other side along with the now expanded magnum round. The arm would be hanging on by by a few strips of ragged flesh and skin. Even if she would have recieved care at a UNSC facility that arm would have been gone and replaced with a cybernetic. Julsie of course would have been very unlikely to have human cybernetic limbs lying around so no new arm for Halsey.
The M6H round is 12.7x40mm, or .50 caliber(half inch diameter). A .45 ACP, one the most common type of self defense/military/law enforcement round, would have obliterated her shoulder, leaving it fleshy, bloody, and permanently useless. And that is just a simple lead bullet with a copper coating. A 12.7x40mm S-APHE, or semi-armor pearcing(pointed and of hard material like steel or tugsen)high explosive, would have most likely taken the arm off and left her bleeding out. A near fatal if not fatal injury, especially if her medical treatment was in the hands of those that don’t believe in medical treatment.
