It’s better to read through but if you don’t want to, scroll to the bottom for my questions
So I’ve heard this before and now I just have to get to the bottom of it…
Some claim the Halo 5 story was re-written at some point during its development.
So I’ll first say that Halo 4 (could add Spartan Ops in with it), from story standpoint, took Halo down a very intriguing path. So many interesting dynamics opened up with the story and one really felt as if the story could go anywhere. After Halo 4 and leading later into the E3 trailers, scouted secrets, commercials, hunt-the-truth… speculation brought Halo to a place I’ve never seen it and it was so much fun. Halo was doing things right and everything seemed in place to be epic once Halo 5 came out.
Then Halo 5 came out…
I’ll admit I was warm to it. I had curiosity wondering where this story was going but overall something about it let me down. Soo many loose ends weren’t tied in well with what was brought forth by Halo 4, Spartan Ops, trailers, commercials, audio entertainments, comics… the list goes on… So although the story connected, there seemed so much that had potential that was, or hardly was, given any focus. Some of it felt forced from a character stance… mostly team Osiris but the potential is there I suppose. So much wasn’t explained thoroughly as it should be… heavens I feel bad for anyone that isn’t super connected with the Halo universe as I’m sure they were very lost… So basically I can see how one can speculate that Halo 5’s story was re-written and maybe rushed because it does feel a little all over the place but like I mention… how’s one to know this is what happened?
So in the end, I very much hope that things were very well thought through and that Halo 5 is just a full on setup for something bigger than we know moving forward… that maybe Halo 5 is necessary towards something great but it’s simply hard for us to understand yet since we don’t know the direction that 343 does. Is that hopeful thinking? Maybe… but I can’t help being hopeful that Halo is right where its supposed to be and that its all headed in the right direction.
Bottom line… What is this whole ordeal about the story being re-written? What are your thoughts on the current state of the story? Do you think it’s possible that the story is in a good spot and has great potential moving forward if done properly?
The simple answer is yes, it was.
There is so much stuff pointing towards Halo 5’s story being rewritten half way through, its just impossible to say otherwise.
To name a few;
They killed off Jul in the first 5 minutes.
The Escalation story arc involving the Janus key hit a brick wall and went nowhere.
The Didact was still alive, but then ‘contained’ or whatever in the comics, never to be mentioned again.
Hunt the Truth S1 having little to no impact on the story, as well as the misleading ad campaign.
A campaign designer just ups and leaves the company after they ship the game. Did he not agree with the changes?
All this concept art that never made it into the game.
My theory is that 343 at some point knew that they weren’t going to finish Halo 5 on time, and MS refused to let them delay the game, so 343 had to throw out must of the unfinished story, that probably involved all the conveniently wrapped up story lines, in order to release the game we got. But they would never admit that though.

Woah! Never seen those concept Arts before! Why aren’t they in The Art of Halo 5 Guardians?
