I’ve been thinking for while now about the terminals back in CEA that make me predict the possibilities of the Reclaimer trilogy’s plot, but there is one that I’ve been focusing more on. The terminal where Guilty Sparks talks about how if the Forerunner’s creations were ever used against them, that they would need a back-up plan. Did they ever succeed in this back-up plan? If so, then what could it be? OBVIOUSLY the title “Halo” remains on the series because they still have an important role. That’s when I thought: Could it be possible that the Halos have a second function? If it does, then what is the second function’s purpose? Thinking about things like this really gets me hyped for Halo 4-6!
Feel free to post your thoughts.
Edit: And yes, I know the title has Halo because it’s the name of the franchise! I’d prefer we talk about this theory on the Halo’s 2nd function, or other possibilities for the Forerunner’s back-up plan (besides Shield Worlds). Thank you.

I don’t see why 343 would include it if it wasn’t important.
John did use it against them in Halo 3, now in Halo 4, we’ll see exactly what that back-up plan was.
Weren’t the Shield Worlds the backup plan? If the rings were used against them, the Forerunners could enter the Shield Worlds for protection.
I presume that it might be referring to the Shield worlds. But, i’m not up to date on the latest books, Other than the daft idea of Humanity having a past space empire(which breaks the point of the Human setting in that regard)
If that Ancilla 049 has some truth to it, I can imagine the importance of a shield world.
The Halo ring is a weapon, and it can be activated, or used for more than it’s intended enemy, the Flood.
If the Precursors got their hands on it, the Forerunners would be forced to fight for it, or cower in the shield worlds.

Of course. Just like ODST and Reach still had Halo in the title. But just thinking about it, we are back in the main saga where in each game, we have been on a Halo. I just love all the possibilities this franchise could take.

Okay, these replies aren’t exactly the way I thought they would go. You all are more than likely correct. However, we already know about Shield Worlds in general.
Let’s try a different question. Would the Forerunners want to forever hide in the Shield Worlds? Doesn’t sound too pleasant, so probably not. What would they use as their second offensive strategy? Instead of talking about the well-known Shield Worlds, let’s talk about how the Halos just MIGHT have a second function and what that function may do. So please, I’d rather speculate on this possible theory instead of talking about already known info because it just gets old. Let’s think outside the box!
The word “Halo” remains in the title because that is the recognisable name of this particular intellectual property; it would make very little marketing sense to change it now. I wouldn’t interpret that as a guarantee that the Halo array will feature in all future titles bearing the name.

I know. But the main question on this post is if the Halos do have a second function, then what could it be? I still am waiting for someone to give their ideas on this.
I’m not quite sure what new function you’re referring to (I still don’t think the Anniversary terminals should be considered canon), but the two original functions assigned to the Halo array were:
- Contain Flood specimens and the facilities necessary to research those specimens;
- Destroy all sentient life in the galaxy as a failsafe in the event that the Flood were to overwhelm the Forerunners.

Speculate. Could they have another feature to them that we don’t know of? Maybe they are the keys to a device even more devastating. Just something that is made up, but is realistic enough (in Halo terms) to be true.
On a side note, basically I’m trying to see if people can come up with more new, positive ideas instead of repeat threads that are just full of complaints.
I’ve found very little threads that talk about how the story could turn out in interesting ways that no one had thought of before. While I understand there are good reasons to complain, there are just too many for me and as such, I can never find these unique ideas of other people. The complaints seem to have gotten out of hand and are always about the same things: rank, weapons, and armor abilities. -_- Way to use your imagination (not directed at you)!
