Halo's Music Old Vs New!

I Honestly hope with Halo Infinite’s Campaign you use something a little more classic with the music as well! With Halo: 4 and Halo: 5 Guardians the music just didn’t do well with alot of people! I mean how did we go from having awesome music like

Too the garbage we have in Halo 4 and 5?
*Just like the classic Art style your are rendering back please for the love of god bring back the Music that made us feel some actual Emotion for the Campaign.
Ps. Visuals are pretty big but aren’t everything!

Why did you feel the need to create this? Nothing good comes from creating these “old vs new” threads. Just because the music was different does not make “garbage”. Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians both have very memorable songs on their original soundtracks just like every other Halo game before them.

I enjoyed Halo 4’s soundtrack a lot. It wasn’t what I expected from Halo, but it had a lot of terrific tracks in my opinion. However, watch this video and try telling me that traditional Halo music doesn’t make a Halo game one million times better.

Halo 5 introduced nothing memorable to me. I can’t think of a single melody from Halo 5 that I can remember except the general Halo theme, which it absolutely butchered in The Trials. Halo 5 not only has the worst version of the Halo theme in the entire Halo franchise, but it has the worst soundtrack of any Halo title by a mile.

Omg that video I’ve never seen it before but Halo:4 would of been so good with all that classic music within the Campaign that just feels good! I really wish 343i would take notice to that! That makes it 100x better!

Yeah. Like I said, I really enjoy Halo 4’s music, especially when compared with Halo 5’s; but it’s just not nearly as fitting with the Halo universe as the music of Bungie’s days. Every now and then I go back to that video just to listen to how much nicer things could have been. I’d even say that people would have been more accepting of the artstyle if the music had been as it is in the video.

The music in the e3 trailer was heavily influenced by music from the original trilogy. From what I remember there was a version of the Halo theme and “Luck” from Halo 3. So that should encourage you. Since Halo Infinite is a soft reboot I think 343 are going to bring back a lot of the old music, which should be great.

But I really disagree with you that H4 and H5 had “garbage” music.

Halo 4 has a great soundtrack. If you didn’t feel emotion from the music in Halo 4’s campaign then you probably weren’t paying attention. It was obviously a departure from Halo 3, where many of the tracks were remade versions of ones from the first two games, but the music is terrific in my opinion and mostly completely original, which is refreshing. Also you linked Unforgotten and Never Forget as examples of music the newer games were missing. There is literally an adaptation of Never Forget in Halo 4!!!

Halo 5 had a very disappointing campaign in my opinion and I don’t think the soundtrack is as bad as people think, there is a good mix of classic and new music. It was just paired with an underwhelming story.

Old music, new one didn’t feel like halo

Or, you know? You got different taste. I personally can’t stand electronic music at all, so while I can accept H4’s music to be on a high level objectively speaking, I’ll never be able to enjoy it. In fact it gives me headaches during a prolonged gameplay - problem I never encountered in any FPS or RTS Halo title before, H5 included.

The only thing sound wise four did better than five imho are the effects. Especially those peeping sounds like the hit-markers and the shild recharge FX… They are just horrible! Can’t defend them at all! And until this day I’m asking to myself what the heck the sound fx team at 343i was thinking while implementing them frankly. I guess that’s part why people are so against the music in H5 as well, the special effects butchered the sound track sadly.

In any case if you enjoy primarily metal, jazz or rock I doubt you would be able to appreciate the electrical sounds in the background of Halo 4 - at least not over Halo 5.

That said it’s a discussion about the (imho) worst and second worst entry, and I’m including the RTS series! I get it that it’s hard to reach a level lime Marty’s and his team, especially when you have to add to a style that is uniquely them and not yours, but when I rather go back and listen to the HW sound-tracks rather than the H4/5 ones… Well, than I’m sorry to say, but something went terribly wrong! :pensive:

the music from the discover hope cutscene was just absolutely amazing that was pure halo imo you could really tell it was heavily inspired by the bungie trilogy I think the whole game will be heavily inspired by the bungie games for example the scene with chief in what looks like the control room you can clearly tell they were using luck from halo 3

Or, you know? You got different taste” I did try to make it clear that this was my opinion, which is why I specifically said “in my opinion” multiple times.

I agree with you that there is a lot of electronic music that can be grating and annoying in Halo 4. This is mostly prevalent in a bunch of relatively mundane gameplay encounters, and especially in Spartan Ops, where that whole mode is a bunch of fairly uninspired encounters with Covies and Prometheans. So yes, in the kind of mid mission type fights where there is not a lot emotionally or story wise going on, I totally agree, Halo 4’s music is not very good.

BUT, I think that Halo 4’s soundtrack’s high points are right up there with the music from the original trilogy, and the claim that Halo 4’s music is garbage and unemotional bothers me. I can see how someone would feel that way though if they didn’t care much about, or pay much attention to the story of the campaign, or if they came in with very entrenched expectations about how they want Halo music to sound.

I agree with you about the shield sounds in H5, they are not great. And I actually really disliked many of Halo 4’s effects even more, such as the sounds of the BR and plasma weapons.

Didn’t mean to offend you, but it’s garbage

I think it’s reasonable to suppose at this point that 343i will finally bring back some of Marty’s themes and motifs, after two game OST’s that outright ignore them (Halo 4) or incorporate them in the most minimal fashion allowable (Guardians). The reveal trailer using that sweet, sweet Halo 3 score was a phenomenal hype-maker.

I can applaud 343i for having tried something different (it wasn’t like they could expect to beat O’Donnell at his own game, after all), but like a lot of other changes they’ve made to the series, it’s time to admit a lot of their new way hasn’t worked and to artfully reincorporate the old, better elements. I’m fine if they keep “117” around in some way, though. It’s the only thing from H4 or H5 I can readily call to mind from either score.

I personally love Halo 4’s OST. It was certainly different from the music of the original trilogy, but it perfectly fit the whole environment of Halo 4’s campaign.

Arrival, Aliens, and Belly of the Beast were so perfect for what was going on and I honestly believe that replacing them with classic music would have subtracted from what we got. Marty’s music would have made those Halo 4 moments honestly feel less epic.

Halo 5 I completely agree though. There was absolutely nothing that was remotely memorable or epic. I don’t even remember a single instance where the music had an impact on how the campaign felt. It was just so forgettable.

Hey, a fan of Halo 4’s soundtrack!!! Wow!!

I certainly won’t argue that Halo 5 has the best soundtrack relative to the other games. But personally I remember a bunch of memorable instances where the music worked well with the action in the campaign, for example:

  • Main Menu: Halo Canticles and Blue Team. - Osiris opening cutscene: Light is Green. - During the first mission: Kamchatka. - Blue Team banshee fight: Scavengers. - Fighting the Warden: Cavalier (I will admit this song gets annoying because it is paired with so many Warden battles, which gets old quick, but it is memorable) - Chief vs Locke Cutscene: Crossed Paths (Hate the choreography but like the music) - Phaeton section in the caves during Reunion: Crypt - Mantis part on Sanghelios: Walk Softly. - While the SoS banshees are harassing the kraken during enemy lines: Covenant prayers - That big fight in the multilevel ruins on Enemy Lines: Warrior World - During the Battle of Sunaion and especially during its ending cutscene: Osiris Suite, Act 3 - Running down the Guardian at the start of Genesis: Advent - The room just before the triple Warden fight on The Breaking: The Trials - The final Cortana attacks Earth curscene: End Game - During the end credits: Blue Team and Jameson Locke

Motifs! That’s the word I was looking for in a previous thread.
I’m happy to hear a few different Halo 4 motifs in Infinite but I want them to be mixed in with music that is primarily based on Marty’s. I don’t want an entire track based on Halo 4 music.

Hmm… I find it fascinating that you’re this fond of Halo 5’s soundtrack, enough to mention this many tracks and when they appear. What I’d like to know though is, what specifically do you admire about each of these tracks and the overall Halo 5 sound, and more importantly, why do you think it fits it in with the established sound of the Halo series?

“why do you think it fits it in with the established sound of the Halo series?”

Neil Davidge (the primary composer of Halo 4’s music) said of Kazuma Jinnouchi’s (the secondary composer) music in Halo 4 in a Classic FM article: “He has superbly provided essential links between my own ‘evolution’ of the Halo music with the previous music legacy composed by Marty O’Donnell”. In Halo 5 Jinnouchi had full control of the music, and he provided even more links between Halo 5’s soundtrack and the music from previous Halo’s. In my opinion he did a great job merging new and original sounds with classic Halo motifs. I’ll give you some examples of tracks where music from previous games is incorporated:

  • Halo Canticles: Reintroduces the classic Halo chant present in CE’s Opening Suite, along with some beautiful strings and piano that is right at home in the Halo musical library. - Rock and Ice: This song carries over the 117 motif, as it is used in Chief’s introduction, it is slow steady, grand, with a hint of sorrow, perfect for Chief. - Scavengers: Again incorporates the 117 theme with elements from Halo 2’s Prologue and also Halo 4’s Wreckage. - Keeper of Secrets: Used to introduce the Warden, it includes a small part used in the ending cut-scene of Cairo Station in Halo 2. - Walk Softy: A remake of Mantis from Halo 4. - Genesis: Contains some ambient elements of the Halo 4 Forerunner sound, used on a Forerunner planet similar to Requiem - Dominion: Contains notes from Halo 4’s Green and Blue, which is perfect as Dominion highlights what Cortana has become while Green and Blue highlights her and MC’s relationship. - The Trials: This embodies the classic Halo theme from Combat Evolved. - Crypt: More of the 117 motif is present here, it also uses synths in a similar way to tracks in Halo 2 and Halo 3, and is overall an awesome track. - Blue Team: This brings to life a substantial portion of 117, it also ends with the first five notes from Halo 3’s One Final Effort in the same way Halo 4’s Atonement does. - Osiris Suite, Act 1: The song starts with a movement from Halo CE’s Opening Suite, specifically the first piece that plays in the first cut-scene of the first mission of the first Halo game, where Alpha Halo and the Pillar of Autumn come into view and Keyes says: “Cortana all I need to know is did we lose them?” How can you get more Halo than that?!?!There are probably more elements from previous Halo games that I missed, but it is clear that Halo 5’s soundtrack draws SIGNIFICANT inspiration from the “established sound of the Halo series” and it ABSOLUTELY fits in with the other Halo soundtracks.

Also I want to mention that Jinnouchi does a lot more than just rehash old tracks. He creates lots of original music that fits perfectly with the settings and moments where they appear in Halo 5. Light is Green is pulsing with energy and then crescendos perfectly matching the action in the opening Osiris cut-scene. Kamchatka has such a great texture and works so well following Light is Green in the first mission. Argent Moon does a great job conveying the remoteness of the ONI research station with its cold and clear sound, it also fits very much within the Halo sound, see Halo 2’s Cairo Suite and Orbit of Glass. On Sanghelios, the composer crafts a unique sound and texture that is fantastic at highlighting the sense of ancient tradition present in the thousands of years old ruins on the planet. Check out Honor’s Song, Warrior World, and Covenant Prayers. Osiris Suite, Act 3 does a terrific job pairing the Sanghelios musical texture with pulse pounding percussion and brass that work amazingly well for the invasion of Suniaon and Osiris’s escape on the Guardian. Sentry Battle has a brassy, booming sound that evokes the power of the Guardians on Evacuation. I could go on because there are lots of examples of excellent music all throughout the soundtrack that work very well both within the specific context of Halo 5, and the larger legacy of the Halo series.
