Halo's Impending Fanbase Clash

I haven’t seen many people talking about this and I’m curious to see if people agree with me. I have a prediction that the Halo community as a whole will go through a really interesting phase with Halo Infinite.

Halo 5 was disappointing to many of the Halo fans, but there is also a good amount of people that still play Halo 5 to this day. It’s hard to say the exact percentage of the Halo fanbase liked Halo 5, but it feels like there is a substantial amount of people who liked AND disliked Halo 5.
Meanwhile, 343 has worked on the wonder Halo MCC. Over the years it has seen improvements, such as it’s introduction to the PC platform and it’s exposure being on Xbox Game Pass. It even has cross platform. So naturally, those that didn’t like Halo 5, like myself, have scurried off to Halo MCC to replay their favorite childhood games with friends.

Halo 5 and Halo MCC have been brewing their communities separately for a while now. Halo Infinite’s Multiplayer will be cross-platform and free, expanding it’s reach further than it’s ever been. I think that Halo Infinite will reveal to us one of the most interesting community clashes we’ve seen happen to Halo yet. I can only imagine Halo purists arguing about balancing changes and Halo 5 players having to re-learn a Halo game without advanced movement. This isn’t a pessimistic view as much as it is an excited one. I can’t wait to be in the middle of this and see which “side” 343 takes, which fans overwhelm which, and who will stick around and who will go back to their old favorites?
Something like this can honestly be a breeding grounds for some really exciting changes and advances for Halo as a franchise. What do you guys think? A diverse and loud fanbase will likely result in some really fun arguments in lobbies. I wonder if 343 will even be ready for all of this noise? Are they prepared to compromise and follow through with their decisions for the game? It’s all so exciting and I can’t wait to be a part of it. Of course, I hope for the best for Halo Infinite, but I’m curious what your guys’ thoughts are on this? Will this destroy Halo or will something awesome come out of it?

I made a video on this to show some proof for my points. It’s not the most serious essay or anything, but if you’re interested to see a more in depth explanation for this fanbase split check it out

As someone who started really playing Halo with Halo 5 and switching to Halo MCC, I think it will get heated initially, but I think it’ll end up like the smash bros community. Like how there are different sub-communities for the different games. I think Halo 5’s community will kinda be like melee or brawl. I also think that 343i will most likely keep updating Halo MCC, and many people will stick with MCC.

I think it will be pretty much the same as every halo release. There’s a group that thinks the new thing is the worst and ruins the franchise, and there’s another that thinks its the best halo yet. Usually the former group dominates the forums for a while, then decides to do something else. Maybe infinite will be different, as 343 has emphasized the return to roots aspect of the new title, so maybe fewer people will be upset, assuming that return to roots pans out? Personally, I think the H5 community won’t be upset with the new movement system, as there is still sprint, clamber, and slide capabilities, making it somewhat akin to H5. I think only purists will be that system in particular. With that being said, I am worried about sliding, as I hate that mechanic in basically every game it is included in, and I think it could be extremely frustrating to see in Halo multiplayer. Maybe it will be fine though, I guess we’ll see. Overall, I’m not convinced that this release will be substantially different from any other we’ve had in the Halo series, in terms of community debates over movement mechanics at least.

I see what you’re saying about the movement options like slide and grappling. However, I don’t think this is something to worry about. Games like Titan Fall use movement to their advantage by basing the gameplay and maps around it. Personally, I think the movement looks like a good mix of newer Halo and legacy and will make both happy.

I mostly agree, especially with grapple, that looks so fun and a great alternative to jetpack. I just feel like sliding doesn’t add anything interesting to the movement in infinite, in ways that clamber and grapple will. However I think that arguing that other games’ movement systems worked because they built maps around those systems is somewhat missing the point. People want halo to feel like halo, because they like the unique gameplay aspects that are inherent to halo. Newer movement systems can change that halo feel, which is why people get upset about them sometimes, and why I don’t like sliding. Maybe it will fit well with Halo’s formula, but I doubt it.

I say that we should only enjoy the game as they offer it to us and be grateful, that fighting for tastes is very silly xd

I personally don’t like Halo 5’s advanced movement (I know there are those who do and you have a right to have your own likes and dislikes… Even if they’re wrong), but I wouldn’t call myself an absolute purist. I think that even though things like sprint, clamber, and sliding etc. are in Infinite, it still has the ability to feel like the Real Halo. And it looks like from what we’ve seen so far, 343 has tuned those mechanics to work with Halo’s gameplay. I hope both sides will be satisfied (more the Real Halo fans than the Halo 5 fans lol). Above all I hope Infinite will be the best Halo game it can be. (But honestly frick smart-link though amirite :))))))))))))))))))) lol)

Just play what you want and enjoy, and don’t worry about the rest. We all have different opinions about whatever, and we all prefer something over another thing, but it’s not worth the time or effort to buy into this kind of stuff. Just my two cents.

Just play what you enjoy and ignore the rest.

I think Infinite will have a good balance between old and new. I don’t foresee a major clash gameplay wise. The biggest clash I see will be people complaining about PC plays vs console players. Which is a valid argument if it’s Xbox One vs PC. But it’s an invalid argument on those who have Series X|S as the new system bridge the gap pretty well.

It happens with every Halo game, but I will be one of the people to say I loved Halo 5’s multiplayer after awhile I couldn’t keep up but it was still one of my favorites. I would not be surprised if a bunch of people start praising the multiplayer after playing Infinite or people start suddenly talking about how ambitious 5 was compared to Infinite.

Welll I think sprint is fun

I think it will be fine if everyone is civil and if we all listen and respect eachothers opinions

I think we are all gonna die

There will always be differences in what each person finds fun and having disagreement is perfectly fine. As have been said we just need to try and be civil when those disagreements surface. Also I try to remember that those that are most aggressive in their opinions tend to be in the minority when compared to the wider community, it’s just they seem more present due to how vocal they can be in their distaste of things, most people, even when they dislike something are reasonable enough to have a calm discussion on the topic.

As has been the case pretty much since Reach, franchise fans will be deeply divided over whether Infinite is an improvement or a step down for the series.

The bigger deal is whether or not Infinite can revitalize Halo outside of its core fanbase. If it can really bring Halo back into the status of a top-five industry-wide Gaming IP, it will be an undeniable success. Even then, it will have countless classic Halo fans and Reclaimer Saga fans furious at how it didn’t carry forward some of the things they love most about their favorites.

I see your point, but Halo 4 and 5 don’t feel like Halo to most people already which is why they stick to MCC, and I think 343i is trying to shake up the feel a little bit while respecting and considering the legacy fanbase. And if people really don’t like Halo infinite’s movement, they’ll just keep playing MCC and, with my strong faith that MCC will get continuous updates into the foreseeable future, I think they’ll be fine. Also if the slide mechanic was causing people to not like it or make it unfun, they would have heard something from beta flight testers, and most likely removed it.

It’s gonna be like a tornado spinning in both directions at the same time.

real reason people like the mcc because the movement of play, for some easier to control compare to halo 5

> Halo's IMPENDING Fanbase CLASH! (Halo Infinite E3 Multiplayer Reveal) - YouTube

I’m someone who grew up on Halo starting with Combat Evolved, played MCC before Halo 5’s release, and when Halo 5 came out I completely stayed away from MCC aside from occasional Campaign fun. I’ve been playing almost exclusively Halo 5 for the past 6 years (excluding other game franchises ofc). I love every Halo game and if I was stuck playing one at random, i’d be happy. So, I feel like Halo Infinite is as close to a perfect compromise as you can get, with the game getting rid of the thruster packs and Spartan abilities of 5, while keeping some gameplay aspects, and staying more or less true to the legacy Halo games as well with equipment pickups, world design, story plot, focus on sandbox, etc etc. Undeniably there will be a clash. One side who dislikes Halo Infinite at it’s core, and the other side who loves the game for one reason or another. I personally feel it doesn’t have anything to do with whether the person plays Halo 5 or MCC, moreso what they personally enjoy in the game and what they enjoy. Someone who has played Halo 5 religiously may not even give a hoot about advanced movement, or someone who plays Halo 3 a ton right now might wish the game had sprint and clamber.

And as far as 343 “taking sides” I believe they will take the side of whomever out populates the other. That or they will compromise like they already have done.
If Halo 4 and 5 were the most well-received Halo games by the majority of the community, Halo Infinite would look much different. You have the old “bungie stan” Halo fans who prefer the old Legacy Halo trilogy who act as the anchor for the community, ensuring and fighting to keep the game true to it’s old roots. And you have the new-age Halo fan, the young ones who started playing during the Halo; Reach or Halo 4/5 days, who are used to the advanced movement and the new art styles and characters, who unlike the anchors, want to see the franchise and universe evolve and grow into something more than what it was. When you combine these two sides of the community, as well as the sweet middle-ground players, you get Halo Infinite. A beautiful mix of old and new, old art styles and new, old gameplay mechanics and new, and so it becomes something new entirely with love and passion from both sides of the coin.

Halo infinite is the child of the two sides of the Halo community. The anchor of the old players and the trailblazing of the new players. I think the two sides will always be at war, but perhaps with Infinite we can all find some middleground and accept the game for what it is, what it always has been. New games, old games, it’s all Halo.
