In previous Halo games we have had terminals(Halo 3 and 4) and data pads(Halo Reach) to provide us with some back story but maybe in the upcoming next gen Halo game a new way of receiving bonus story features could be merged with combat.
The prometheans(Halo 4) Were once biological Forerunners before they accepted the composer to turn them into mechanized beings. These new Prometheans still retain some of their personalities and original memories so maybe instead of activating terminals to get bonuses, you could encounter a tougher form of Promethean ( like a boss but less powerful) which you have to defeat to get the new information. Or have a certain number of each, like 4 terminals and 4 prometheans. However this is only if the prometheans we encountered in Halo 4 are still hostile towards humanity.
This is just a concept that i felt like sharing and would appreciate anyone else’s opinions.
Thanks for reading!
So what do you guy’s think about this idea?
That certainly is an interesting idea, and i think whatever 343 do, they should think outside the box for these extras within the campaign and ultimately have a bit of fun with them.
What I would like to see however with terminals, which I’ve posted somewhere in this forum, is for terminals to be optional flashback missions.
The terminals will remain relatively hidden through the campaign (as normal) and once found and activated, a cutscene will appear (with the option to skip as usual) once ended (perhaps on a cliffhanger or ready to start a chapter) a message will pop up saying do you want to play the ‘Didact Flashback mission’ which you can say yes/no to.
These missions should be playable outside of the campaign whenever you want (once you’ve unlocked them) and should not affect the campaign if you die (allowing you to continue or retry).
This could build up the past time line without cluttering up the campaign. We could see and play historic events as a wide variety of different characters/species.
Such examples could be:
- Playing as a precursor fighting the forerunners
- First encounter with the flood as ancient humans
- Fleeing to forerunner worlds and starting the human-forerunner war
- Major events in the forerunner war (such as various victories playing as either side)
- Playing as the Didact defeating the humans
- Playing as a forerunner with their first encounter with the flood
- Playing as a Promethean fighting the flood
- Playing as a monitor on a halo ring
EDIT:
I think that it is important that any cutscenes (campaign included) flow when played chronologically in the theatre (like halo wars) so if people choose not to play it, they can still understand the storyline.
That is a really interesting idea. Reminds me of Assassins creed and their flashback sessions. In my opinion I think fans would love that, and would love even more to be able to witness the force of the Forerunners against any who oppose them.
I’ve not actually played assassins creed, I got the idea from x-men legends (other flashback) - getting on a bit now but i enjoyed the game. Skip past about 2 mins.
In that game once you completed the mission, you unlocked a character to play as. Although I don’t see that applying to halo, perhaps there can be unlockables such as an armour set for completing them (as well as an achievement), ie. mission 1: left shoulder, 2: right shoulder, 3: torso, 4: legs, 5: forearms, 6: an accessory, 7: helmet, all missions: an extra unlockable (battle damaged variant? or an accessory of some kind?)
Yeah, or like the Halo combat evolved anniversary terminals, Forerunner symbols could appear and you must enter them to unlock extras. I really do hope the new terminals (If any) are presented in new ways, it really would be interesting.
I did like the interaction with halo waypoint with the ‘secret’ access to the terminal decoder. Shame its rather too obvious now, kinda takes the fun away, no challenge. Anyway, these glyphs did add mystery to the game, not only did you have to find the terminals but then there was an additional challenge. This was a good addition.
Playable flashbacks could then have you finding Forerunner symbols whilst playing as a Promethean which you must then enter, that would take it to a whole new level!
