Halo Xbox 360 Services Going Offline in 2021.

Link to Tweet.

It’s the end of an era. If you want those online achievements or that top rank, best get them/it now.

I also noticed that player customisation will no longer be supported for Halo: Reach and Halo 4 but will remain for Halo 3. Can somebody explain this? I would hate to lose my Legendary/Pre-order gear and Haunted Helmet.

Damn. Can’t really complain considering how long these games lasted, especially H3. But, next December will be an emotional one for sure. MCC is a worthy replacement I think. Perhaps it’s too idealistic, but I hope it lives on for many years to come.

Thanks for giving such a large heads up, 343i!

I wonder if the shut down of customization for H4 and Reach has to do with the purchase process associated with it. Since the servers will be shut down, players won’t be able to sync their data to verify which armor pieces they own and don’t own. As such, I’m curious if it means players will still be able to use the armor pieces they already own, but won’t be able to earn any more.

Imma go watch Halo 3 montages and cry myself to sleep.
By sunsetting servers, does that also include online custom games?

I thought it would last longer, but it was a good run.

I wish they didn’t automatically stop the sales of the digital versions without warning, they should have given us an extra month to buy copies if we wanted.

Yes I have the discs, but I have no idea if the console after Series X will have discs or not now, I would have bought a copy of Halo 3 digital just in case. Come on 343i, let me give you money haha.

Judging from the picture they included, I think online Custom Games are safe. But don’t quote me on that, lol.

I really hope we will still be able to use the pieces we already own. I don’t like the idea of losing my Eternal Flames and Haunted Helmet.

Step 1: Roll over
Step 2: Try not to cry
Step 3: Cry a lot

goodbye good friend :frowning:

If 343i is going to do this, then they really need to make it a priority to update the titles in MCC up to par with their original releases.
Halo CE’s missing visual effects is probably the most obvious of these, but 2 is also missing quite a few, and Reach’s postprocessing effects for stuff like fog, rain, lighting bloom from flames, etc is reduced.

Perhaps most important considering that this is online stuff that’s going down relates to the file share and how MCC handles files: MCC on console supports a measly 50 files per filetype to be saved locally (and file stuff isn’t on PC at all yet IIRC) This is less then Reach has. Hell it might even be less then what 3 supported… in any case, MCC supports 5 titles (3, ODST, Reach, 4, H2A) with gametype, map, screenshot, film, etc functionality, 50 files per type is nowhere near enough and it’s baffling that this was never changed.

It is a huge inconvenience to anybody who regularly plays customs or forges… Hell, when the Halo 3/Reach to MCC file transfer happened, I straight up was unable to download all of my Halo 3 and Reach maps and gametypes because I hit the limit, and I didn’t even play customs that much to have a huge quantity of maps and gametypes. So all of my gametypes and maps will go poof and become unusable if the file limit isn’t upped before my friend decides to clear his fileshare out that he helped transfer my stuff over with (since we could both only transfer 24 files each).

This is to say nothing of how MCC has heavily neutered screenshot and film support: Screenshots basically don’t even exist in MCC, as it relies on the Xbox DVR rather then the in engine renderers (which also reduces image quality as it compresses them and 3/ODST/Reach’s screenshot renderer spat out higher quality effects in some cases). And yes, this matters, since even if we can still take screenshots in the original releases and save them locally and rip them off the 360 hard drive, player customization will be down for Reach, meaning any screenshots of non-default Spartans will be impossible in 360 Reach, and on MCC reach, there’s the broken postprocessioning

In short, to make sure MCC retains the full functionality of the original releases since they will no longer be usable for online play, file share, etc:

  • CE, 2, and Reach’s visual issues and other bugs need to be fixed (there’s so many other small things, Generalkid has like a dozen videos on his channel about this, some competitive CE players have a giant list, various H2 restoration projects have some as well, etc, but those visual issues are the main ones I can think of) - The amount of local files needs to be upped to at least like 500 per filetype, frankly I don’t see why there’s a cap at all, it should support whatever you have room for on your Xbox One (and when it comes to PC, your hard drive there). - Support for screenshots and films need to be re-added as they were with original releases, to where you can save them locally as part of your local files (not just game DVR) indefinitely and for them to be put on your file shares. The screenshot renderers should support 4k output, from what I’ve seen.

Halo Reach has always been my favorite halo game. So I’m gonna try and get as many of the online achievments as I can before the servers go offline.

Maybe it will work like when they turned off the halo 2 online servers and we can have a repeat of the noble 14. And have people try and see how long they can stay on the servers till they eventually get booted off.

RIP HALO REACH
It will be missed

Wouldn’t you still be able to equip anything that you have unlocked each time you fire up these games? I get that it wouldn’t save because that information is stored on the server, but shouldn’t it still be available to access from the in game menus?

It’s a shame but had to happen at some point. Looks like campaign and custom games are still sticking around. If I want to play the games as they were, I can still gather some friends and hop on there. Also seems like 343 will be passing over user created gamemodes, maps and content over to MCC this year, which is great to see.

Regardless, all the people with a nostalgia dependency are going to hate this.

To go along with your list of things to update, 343i really needs to add in all the Infection maps that are missing from MCC but are present in the Xbox 360 version of Reach. I’m talking about Forge World maps like The Cage and Asylum and even versions of existing maps like Countdown (there were two versions of each map but 343i decided to just bring over half of them.) Even after a year, the map selection for Reach’s Infection is still lacking considerably compared to the Xbox 360 version. It’d be a real shame if these maps are lost forever once matchmaking is taken offline next year and 343i should really consider adding these missing maps to MCC before that happens. I’ve seen others talk about this before but obviously 343i hasn’t mentioned anything about it and so I don’t see any better time than now to add those missing maps back in the game.

Ok someone help me out in my time of mourning. Getting a halo Reach Legendary Edition was on my bucket list. Could I still redeem the code for the flames? No? Or only before a year from now?

watches that old robot chicken video posted on YouTube of the giraffe stuck in the quick sand and the 5 stages of grief which aired about same time Reach was released

Unless I am misinterpreting the article I linked in an earlier reply, player customization is server dependent in Reach and 4.
So if you were to get flames now, you could use them for a year before customization is turned off.

Honestly I think your safer with disks. They can stop digital version access at their whim. I used to have the digital copy of CE on my 360. When CE anniversary came out, I could no longer access the digital CE. Still can’t to this day

I honestly don’t mind much about the multiplayer, but I’m wondering about customs.

For the love of God, and all that is holy, please do a legacy stat transfer to the mcc. Otherwise mine, and lots of others stats collected over almost a decade will be lost

From the checklist picture they posted, it seems like custom games will still be accessible.

Best you can probably do for preservation purposes is to take as many screenshots as you want/need.

Also, can anyone explain what the ‘extras’ for Halo 3 ODST mean?

I’m not bothered by this, I mostly find it weird (and cool of them I guess) they didn’t do this ages ago. They did it way sooner for the original Xbox, and by then there was no MCC, we’re spoiled this time.
I remember being a kid, I just played campaign, and then discovered that Xbox live existed like a week after they shut it down for the original Xbox xD that was so disappointing lol

I have a question about this. I don’t have my 360 anymore, and I’ve never actually played Halo Wars, not my genre. But since it’s Halo I’ve felt I should probably play them at some point instead of just watching it on youtube etc.
Does anyone know if it will be possible for me to get Halo Wars 1 for XBO or XSX at some point if I so wish?
