I blummin love this game… but I suck at it.
Anyone want to teach me the ropes? Or anyone also new to the multiplayer and want to have a fair fight with someone who also doesn’t have a clue?

Sorry to say dude, but you are horribly wrong with that advice 
If you specialize in one form of combat you’re just asking for trouble. Each type of unit has a counter, so if you only build one type of unit, your Enemy can build a single type of counter and have the game won no problem.
Best way to learn is to pick one particular leader (i used Forge), find a consistant team mate and try out different things. If you lose, figure out how your were beat and adapt to ensure that doesn’t happen again. Then rinse and repeat.

Firstly, you need to make sure you’re starting the game correctly with your build order, theres quite a few effective orders depending on your plan for that particular game, but I’ll tell you mine that work for me.
UNSC:
After this it depends which leader I am of course.
Covenant:
Obviously there are other ways that are just as, maybe more effective.
I do not always use this method, it depends how many opponents are Covenant and their ranks.
Additionally, If you are using the Covenant, when you get your leader, try to destroy as many AI bases as possible, even if you don’t want them, it builds stars (this works on any unit), 3 star Covenant Leaders are incredibly powerful so be careful not to let them die!
Agreeing with whats been mentioned already, DO NOT make just ONE unit! Of course if you are Cutter / Forge / Anders you should specialise in ODST / Grizzlies / Hawks. But, think about what your opponent is thinking. Here is an example.
You are Proffessor Anders against Sergeant Forge.
Your special Unit is Hawks, they will know this (and if they are experienced) will prepare themselves with wolverines.
Don’t be worried by this, you just need to balance your population and be ready for them, so you could make Cobras.
But you should still make some Hawks as they are your special unit.
This will work as long as you retreat with your Hawks when necessary and move your Cobras forward etc.
You will get better with practice and you will learn which leaders you are best with. Here are my favourites:
Standard - Prophet / Forge / Brute Chieftain
Deathmatch - Prophet / Cutter

depends what leader you use. if you specilize in one unit it will save time and make it easy for you to rush.
sadly as said its normaly easy to counter.
If you covenant here are the best combos I know
Prophet:Gladiator:10 honor gaurds, 2 hunters, rest jackals.
Honnor gaurds a greatly effective as hard hitting ground units. All you need to do is send 5 in cloak to scout ahead and then send the rest and watch stuff fly.
The Jackals are Anti infitry meaning they do extra damage to infatry and can do great damage to flying units being there infitry making them great as pretection for your honor gaurds.
the hunters work as gaurds for the prophet. even when he’s flying he still counts as a infitry meaning vehicles can destroy him making a few hunters a good thing to look to.
This is cheap and fast making it easy to protect your self aginst a rush. buildings good for most bases are just 3 supply things, 2 halls, 1 shield generator, and 1 temple. there own way. your secound base sould be all supply pads and 3rd all shield generators
Chieftan:Hammer head:4 brutes, 2 hunters,2 wraiths, 2 locust, rest jackals
The Brutes, hunters, and wraiths all work a a shield for your chieftan. They will each work in there own way. Brutes work aginst all. Hunters souly on vehicles, and wraiths on infitry.
Jackals same as before
This is good because its heavy and hard to kill if well used.
Buildings are 3 supply pads, 1 hall 1 factory, 1 shield generator, 1 temple. the secound 1 hall 1 factory rest shield doors. 3rd is same as before.
Arbitor:Hidden sword:10 banshees, 2 vampires, rest jackals.
Banshees are used as reinforcements because once you upgrade your arbitor with cloak he can be used as a heavy power scout but if found he needs back up fast and the fastest are banshees.
Vampires work as vehicle back up if any thing that flys on wheels attacks the arbitor there great as gaurds because there anti air meaning they can do great damage any anything that does not use legs.
Locust are just there a a demo squad
jackals do there thing

All the advice you have been given so far is good if you are new to the game. Experiment for awhile and get a feel for online play. It is a really tough road to get good at this game. The skill gap is huge.
Once you have a certain idea of how to play and manage to get some strats down, I highly suggest watching this youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/bas1sta
He uploads a new video almost daily. You probably won’t get what’s going on at first. It takes awhile to understand how high-level play in Halo Wars works.
In the end, you may aim to get better at the game or you may just want to have fun. But I’ll leave this here just in case. If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer them.

The best way to learn is from your mistakes, lol.
I was beaten in my first 20 games straight, it was painful but it gets easier.
This might help
Make sure you play through the campaign.
This will give you a better understanding of which units are effective against others.
Work on your build speed.
Try different out different stratagies and combinations in a practice game against A.I.
Try to always keep an eye on what your enemies are doing
Check on them every couple of minutes with a scouting unit warthog/ghost/chopper,
this will give you vital clues to what they are building and what you should build to counters
their army
If you find yourself under attack early in the game, don’t give up! keep making buildings and turrets while your friends build up an army that counters.
This game is definately worth learning to play.
I’m a General now and still play on a regular basis.

It also depends on what playlist OP wants to play in too. People will also give you strategies to help you. None of them will probably help you because you need to take their strategies and put your own twist on it. Basically, when some one gives you a strategy, play around with it to find a way of doing it the way you want as long as it gives the same great results or even better results.
Wow! I was expecting this thread just to die straight away! Thanks for all of the advice - I will be adding most of you who have said I can.
I’ve only done the story mode on easy and I have had a fair few skirmishes vs AI, but again on easy… I think I’ll probably just fall to pieces when it gets more frantic (harder)! Having said that, easy isn’t that much of a challenge so I guess I should grow a pair and play on a harder level setting.
I’ve only played one game online and I got beat after 25 mins. My enemy was playing with me I think - he was using just Scorpions with Spartans in (I’m sure he had more than 3 Spartans - is this possible and if so how?)
My worry about playing a 2vs2 or 3vs3 match is that I am going to be naff and everyone else is hardcore - I don’t want to ruin people’s games by bring them down… though I guess I could make it more of a challenge for people to win!!!

This is pretty much how I’ve started most of my skirmishes… so at least I’m starting right! I usually use Cutter… don’t really have a reason why I use him!
If you find a friend or 2, and play either one side or the other, it is best for each of you to build the counter to your teams weakpoint. Played a game for 3 hours going back and forth until the other team quit out.

4 supply pads > Reactor > Fortess > Reactor > Vehicle Depot
Start bulding tanks. Once you have your first tank out, go and clear a rebel base and build your 2nd base. On your 2nd base, build a 3rd Reactor and then another Vehicle Depot. Research Canister Shell and keep building tanks. Now the rest is up to you. Go harass the enemy or stay back until you research Power Turret.
It is not good to wait until you have a full army to go attack. Once you have about 3 or 4 Canister Tanks, go see what the enemy is up to and harass their bases. If things aren’t looking good, retreat. Remember to always scout the enemy to see what they are building so you can counter accordingly.
Also, once you research Power Turret, do NOT research Grizzly Tanks. Power Turret tanks are proven to be stronger than Grizzly Tanks, as crazy as it sounds. Here’s a video on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwQDLRPlk54
So yeah. If the enemy is making air, than mix in some wolverines with your tanks. If the enemy is making tanks like you, do NOT make cobras. They are anti-vehicle but they are too slow and immobile and they still get raped by tanks. So, the counter to enemy tanks… is more tanks.

My advise is to exapand quickly. Don’t be stuck at that one base, take them early on in the game. Also, don’t do what i did where i would make one vehicle depot and select 5 tanks… make 3-4 vehicles depots to start pumping out units faster… this is very important because lets say your fighting your opponent 25-30 mninutes within the game and it seems both you and your opponent are lossing units at the same rate with enough resources and with the 4-5 vehicle depots at that one base you can have out 4-5 tanks at out with the time it would take to build 1 tank. You should see what i’m traying to say but it works very well with air units. I had a friend who made 6-7 air pads pumping out hawks.
Practice with your reaction time in skirmish games, use the D-pad often when rotating between bases and units.
Resources is key.
