Halo Wars capacity

I loved Halo Wars 1, but the one thing I didn’t like about it was the unit capacity. I think there either shouldn’t be a capacity or the cap should be greatly increased. What do you think?

Unit Capacity is necessary in the Starcraft/Age of Empires style RTS, both on a strategic and performance level - especially if you can gain resources from thin air like you can in Wars. First off - the system (especially the Xbone) can only handle so many moving pieces. Theoretically, too many and framerate drops and crashes will be common place. Trust me, I was once a stupid kid using Age of Mythology’s in-depth and complicated level editor. You can only spam so many incarnate sons of Zeus before the gods smite your laptop.

So its necessary from a hardware perspective.

Because your resource collection is primarily based on how efficient your reactors are and how long they can stay alive, the developers can’t actually have an incredible impact on how many resources you can collect. In Age of Empires, you need villagers to mine gold or stone from quarries, cut down trees or forage for food from bushes or wild animals. You are dependent on the how many of these finite resource generating elements the devs put on the map. In long games, all of these natural pieces can be extinguished, bringing the resource collection meta-game, and the creation of new units, to a crashing halt. This requires players to be thinking ahead and allocating their resources as wisely as they can, because they won’t last forever.

This was impossible in Wars. While finite consumable resources are scattered across the map in the form of “energy canisters,” the primary method of gaining resources was to build a reactor and wait. There was no ceiling to the amount of resources you could potentially have. This variable in a player’s Strategy is therefore eliminated, as he will always be gaining income unless something horrible happens to his reactors. This means that he could, conceivably, build units ad infinitum and melt his 360.

So if we want to be nice to our Xbox, and retain a similar type of strategic thought present in the classic RTS games, Unit Capacity is entirely necessary.

We could bump it up and/or have clever ways to work around it, though. Seriously. The way it worked in Wars was ridiculous. The ceiling needs to be there, but it doesn’t need to be that oppressively low.

You guys keep forgetting that Ensemble had limited time and resources to complete Halo Wars. They had a finite timeline and a reduced staff to complete the game with. They just didn’t have the time to spend on trying to sort out and incorporate the more complex elements of an RTS.

CA will not have the same constraints.

I would love to at least see it increased, I think that would be awesome.

Of course. The poor studio was put down by Microsoft before the game was even released.

That just makes those elements even worse. Had Microsoft not drastically altered the direction of the games’ development, Wars would have been an incredibly different - not even Halo. It is for that exact reason I believe those pieces need to be ironed out. Microsoft got in the way. Again. They always do that.

.

Depends on the rest of the game. The capacity should be increased

they should add a 5v5 game mode i would be awesome but i honestly don’t know if the Xbox one would be capable of supporting a 5v5 game mode with 40+ troops per player.

That was also my problem the entire time but it was necessary in the past.
I hope in Halo Wars 2 it will increased…because the power of the cloud xD

With the power increase of the Xbox one the unit capacity will be multiple times larger than halo wars 1

Eh, I don’t mind either. I’m fine with 40 units, all I usually need is 30-34. But I wouldn’t mind an increase in unit capacity. As long as it doesn’t mean more scarabs to deal with, God those things were nightmares.

At best, we might be looking at around 75-80 units max. I think it would be a bit much to have something like 100. 3v3 with 100 pop. per person/AI, way too much in my opinion. I’d like to see where the ground is thank you.

theres a way you can get 99 units capacity, go to skirmish and select deatm match its under standard and put it on a 3v3 map n make sure you have 1 enemy ai and no enemy ai allies and no friendly ais and start capturing bases n then as soon as there is 1 or 2 bases left it should have the capacity to 99

I think that they should just increase it

tht would be nice
