> I absolutely would love a Halo Wars 3. However, your question was, is Halo Wars 3 likely? In my humble opinion, I think not. From what I could find Halo Wars 2 has sold 290,000 copies. This number was nowhere near 343s target and I will go as far to say the game bombed. I’m sure you have heard people complaining that the game died on PC only a few months after it came out. In comparison, the original Halo Wars sold 2.39 Million copies and even that was considered poor by some people. The Halo franchise is no longer the juggernaut it once was, contributing to the massive difference in sales and interest.

(This is my first forum post so please be gentle with me)
I had heard that 290k figure. Where does that number come from?
If its accurate that number seems incredibly low. Using VGChartz (which doesn’t include Halo 5 digital sales so its lower).
Halo 3 - 12.12 million sales vs Halo Wars 2.39 million = Roughly 19.71%.
So 1 in 5 Halo 3 players bought Halo Wars.
Halo 5 - 4.77 million sales vs Halo Wars 2 290K sales = Roughly 6%
So only 1 in 20 Halo players bought Halo Wars 2.
So even accounting for Halo 5 selling less than half of Halo 3 that’s still a huge drop on the proportion. Again rough numbers here but that’s pretty shocking. I’am not sure you could use Halo’s declining popularity to explain that because then sales would have fallen in line with the FPS game.
For Halo Wars 2 to have sold in line with the first title vis a vis the shooter you would have needed:
954,000 sales. So they only met 30% of that amount.
I remember seeing one clip after launch with Kevin Grace (who has mysteriously disappeared I’ve noticed; 343 seems to have a lot in common with the Kremlin) and he seemed pretty downbeat or sullen. Whereas before I recall him being very animated and chatty about the game. So perhaps it did bomb.
I mean, total guess here, but they did definitely suggest we might see new factions down the line and now we aren’t; which suggests they may have trimmed down some of their DLC plans due to lower than expected sales. Stuff like only two missions in Spearbreaker and ATN being sold separately. Again, total speculation.
But its strange, there was a lot of interest and chatter about it. Some Youtuber’s talk as if this game saved the Halo franchise. Yet if those numbers are correct, then the game massively undersold.
