Atriox, the antagonist of HW2, wears bulky gray UNSC armor. Obviously this was not issued to him–he stole it from a UNSC soldier.
However, unless it’s really tight on his body, the only UNSC armor close enough to fitting him would be the Spartans’ MJOLNIR, and upon closer examination, his armor seems like just that.
The only gray MJOLNIR armor we’ve seen is on the cover of The Cole Protocol–a member of Spartan-II Gray Team (go figure) is wearing it.
Atriox has obviously been around for a bit and, considering he’s one of the Banished–presumably banished to some far-flung world, do you think maybe he encountered Gray Team, also sent to far-flung worlds, and…well…killed at least one of them?

I think he may have received it as part of some shady ONI deal. Perhaps his forces were given equipment in exchange for a service, similar to the outfitting of certain groups by the CIA in the real world.
Don’t think it’s possible for it to be a spartan’s armor piece but it clearly is UNSC issued equipment. I would like to think it was given to him by ONI but it seems more reasonable that ht scavenged various UNSC metals and reforged it for a custom fit body piece using some new tech available.
I think its much more likely to just be a visual upgrade on the power amour the brutes had in Halo 3.
There is no way he is wearing full blown MJOLNIR. Human and Brute anatomy differences make it a certain impossibility for him to put it on. It is possible he salvaged some of the armor pieces of the suit from Spartans he killed (either II’s, III’s, or IV’s) and incorporated it into his armor, kind of like a war trophy.
To add on to the existing comments, the armor (however much of it is UNSC) was likely scavenged as the one piece of armor we can identify with certainty as UNSC is an ODST chest piece.
From what I have seen of the character, it looks like he has some ODST armour on his chest area.
Well Castor in Halo Last Light had stolen a lot of UNSC stuff like Mjolnir schematics so it isn’t new that brutes take and use human tech if thry find it useful.
He has a ODST chest plate on, but I think it’s mostly a trophy kind of deal.

Allegedly it’s been confirmed that The Banished were a splinter group that fought the Covenant during the Human-Covenant war, which adds a bit more weight to what I said. Also, his armour looks a bit too well put together to be scavenged IMO.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Yeah I agree with you on this one. It looks specifically made for him, the mechanical hand and the other components don’t seem like the jirelhanae can just make due to them having such few supplies and technological tier. And the UNSC armor could have been some way for him to be a test subject somehow like jul’ mdama was for ONI.
It really does look like it was custom-made for him. It makes me wonder if there is an ONI connection, maybe something more than just weapon and equipment, since I doubt they’d give that kind of hardware to just anyone… It gives new meaning to the song used in the trailer too.
It’s just a suit patched together from whatever he could get his hands on. Maybe a few bits and pieces of Mjolnir that were retrieved from other lost Spartans, Brute armour, an ODST chest plate. Good theory, but I don’t think so.
I think it’s either suped up armour made by the Prophets in preparation for the Great Schism and Atriox got some before he went it alone, or killed some Loyalist wearing it; or ONI made it and gave supplies as payment for fighting the Covenant. Personally I prefer it be Covie armour he has added any all tech he can get his hands on rather than it being tailor UNSC made.
What if ONI knew about the banished and wanted them to help the UNSC stop the Covenant since they had a common goal and they gave him a custom build armor in an agreement?
