Halo Wars 2 Space Fleets

So we all know with the expansive sandbox in the Halo universe there are more than enough vehicles to make an RTS. They actually did it, its called Halo Wars and it was more than good enough for a console game. Now there are rumors circulating that Halo Wars 2 could be coming up and it got me thinking. Ground battles are awesome but the space or “naval” battles in Halo are some of the coolest sequences in any of the games. So, why not create a space mechanic for the next Halo RTS similar to Sins of a Solar Empire or the space portions of Star Wars: Empire at War. Both factions have more than enough ship types to support an awesome game. Let’s break it down:

UNSC

Light Frigates

Heavy Frigates

Light Cruisers

Heavy Cruisers

Destroyers

Battleships

Colony Ships

Carriers

Smaller Units

Covenant

Corvettes

Frigates

Light Cruisers

Super Cruisers

Battle Cruisers

Destroyers

Battleships

Assault Carriers

Super Carriers

Smaller Units

How would you guys feel about a Halo RTS in space? I’d love to see a game make use of some very well fleshed out fleet and ship designs.

Factions:

NPC’s

Flood - Enemy NPC, attacks everyone comes into contact with

Forerunners

  • Would have fleet or technology caches across the map that can be claimed by anyone, usually protected by Flood or dormant Forerunner constructs
  • Could find Halo rings, Shield Worlds or other Forerunner structures. Artifacts on wild asteroids or planets.

PC’s

Storm Covenant - semi-autonomous client state of Forerunners, at war with UNSC and Sangheili, hostile towards everyone else. Begin with Didact as “hero” unit and a few other powerful ships and have a bonus on recovering Forerunner tech. Can build Promethean units at a high cost

Kig-Yar - trade alliance with Jiralhanae and Insurrection, neutral towards Sangheili and UNSC, hostile towards Storm

Jiralhanae - at war with Sangheili, trade alliance with Kig-Yar, hostile towards UNSC and Storm, neutral towards Insurrection

Insurrection - at war with UNSC, trade alliance with Kig-Yar, neutral towards Jiralhanae, hostile towards Sangheili and Storm

Sangheili - at war with Jiralhanae, allied with UNSC, hostile towards Insurrection and Storm, neutral towards Kig-Yar

UNSC - at war with Insurrection and Storm, allied with Sangheili, hostile towards Jiralhanae, neutral towards Kig-Yar. Begin with Infinity as “hero” unit

There actually is a SOASE mod called Sins of the Prophets, Though its in early alpha
and if Microsoft got one made they’d probably “ask” them to stop making it which would suck.

Suns fun.

yes please

Shut up and take my money.

I’d love me some Halo Wars 2.

I doubt it will ever happen but I would pay all the monies to control a covenant fleet. Prove me wrong 343, prove me wrong.

sins of a solar empire rebellion (20$ more or less) and then the mod sins of the prophets (free).
The mod is fantastic, but the game is not that cool, more about macro tactics than micro from what I’ve seen… however you can build and control a covenant fleet, in the last build of the mod.

Well, I don’t think that the Corvette you listed there would really be all that useful. It seems to be used more for troop deployment and air artillery.

Shortswords are more like atmospheric bombers, imo. They would quickly get shoved out by Longswords, Sabers, and Broadswords.

Covenant Supercarriers would honestly break the system. It is over ten kilometers longer and bristles more guns than the Super Star Destroyer in Empire at War, as well as have starfighters just poor out of it.

If the UNSC has Spartan Infiltrators, how about the Covenant have boarding pods a la Halo CE and 2?

I would also like to recommend including Phantom Gunboats.

I would love to command a fleet of ships and participate in naval battles in the speculated Halo Wars 2. It would be even more interesting to see in a sort of Battlefront-esque Galactic Conquest mode, where space battles would precede ground battles if there was an enemy fleet stationed in orbit.

Which was how the rts Star Wars: Empire at War played out, with a few exceptions.

that would be incredible, fighting above orbit for control of planetary insertion. Your ground forces and the amount of “aid” available to you (be it reinforcements, or call-downs) would be determined by how many ships you lost in orbit. Ground forces could also be effected by the initial battle in space, by having more or less moral depending on the outcome. This is just another way to integrate space and ground battles into one seamless experience.

amazing. . . and the success / failure of the space battle helps determine naval superiority and thus the amount of coveted orbital MAC or plasma strikes?

Or for example, on a UNSC-defended planet, if UNSC is winning the space battle, more orbital MAC platforms and/or ships can be used to directly support ground engagements by orbital bombardment as opposed to needing to focus on targeting enemy capitals around orbit.

I love this idea.
