So basically, halo wars was okay but it barely scratched the surface of what halo is, it felt like an age of empires clone so I have a few ideas to make halo wars 2 into a proper halo game.

Galactic scale combat-
How can a halo game featuring the covenant NOT include their navy? It is what they are best at and most known for, glassing, stealth cruisers, troop carriers, etc… It is rare that the covenant build bases on hostile planets instead of simply glassing it or retrieving an artifact and retreating. -
There needs to be less predictable battles (larger would be awesome too) I constantly find myself going straight towards the super units and whoever gets there first, wins.

Having a current era halo wars would be simply amazing, think about the prometheans taking out a flood infection area that was once a human colony while the covenant remnants mop up the surviving humans or the sanghelli and humans teaming up to cleanse an entire world that fell to the flood.

Having a less “simple” design-
Halo is HUGE and a game about every faction and every possible battle should contain all weapons, vehicles and equipment belonging to that faction, choosing what arms to use in your covenant strike team, do you want elite snipers backed up by jackals? Or do you want a general with a fuel rod cannon and a pair of hunters? -
More time should be put into it, halo wars flopped demographically but they assumed it was because halo fans didn’t like RTS games but in truth, the game gave the bare minimum in my mind, sure it added some things to the halo universe and it was a good way to tell a story but I can’t make endless scenarios with 3 types of each unit (some being better off not being used ever). When I looked at the beta, it looked in-depth and strategic with battles and situations changing on the fly but in the final release, the game was predictable and catered to people who weren’t good with strategy but liked halo and that doesn’t make for a replayable or memorable game.
comparing a possible halo wars to the first one is actually a bad idea in my mind because a new halo wars could be far more
than what its predecessor was and that is an extremely exciting concept. I hope you guys have some great input as to what would make halo wars 2 a great game but keep in mind suggestions should be feasible on today’s current gen consoles and ultimately should be halo at heart
Backwards compatibility would be a start maybe ride the hype train of Halo 5?
