Greetings. Recently I have thought about how halo 5s, ahem, odd campaign has affected the overall story and the potential future of the franchise. Personally, the story in halo 5 caused great concern for the future titles and how their campaigns will play out. While what I am about to mention isn’t in any way confirmed, it seems like a likely scenario. For those who haven’t heard, various people have found evidence that many of the questionable decisions that were made in guardians were determined primarily by profit based decisions, such as the resurrection of Cortana. While, once again, these claims are not confirmed, they seem, at least to me, very likely. As the reception of the campaign has shown, such business practices aren’t going to work in the long run. There have been many attempts to damage control a lot of the campaigns questionable decisions, but they simply don’t seem to be enough to help the current direction of halo. To add to this the community has been divided on various other things such as gameplay and art style, both of which are points of conflict that could be fixed if dealt with properly. In fact, from what we have seen so far one of them potentially has been. In halo wars 2 there seems to be an art style that takes the old “classic” style and incorporates the strengths of the newer 343 style to create a new style that retains what made the original style so beloved ( and has many assets that haven’t undergone any changes, thankfully, such as the classic pelican and weapon designs) while having certain details from the newer style.
Given how many different things need to be fixed by this game, in many ways this game could determine the future of halo. It could bring back the classic feel and have a decent story, as well as setting up the future stories in a way that feels less forced and makes more sense, or it could flop, being yet another low point in terms of the franchises story, which could and would cause many, potentially myself included, to loose faith in the direction that the story is going ( even though many of us already have to a degree)
Anyways, given how far halo wars 2 is probably into its dev period, all we can do at this point is wait and hope for the best.

Or there could be a drastic change in the story extremely late in the development cycle (à la Destiny, or supposedly H5) that end up making it weak or poorly received.

lets hope not
It a RTS don’t get your hopes up that everything will be dandy
But its does show a positive change for the story writing and art direction.
the fate fall down to whoever can take control of the ARK, will determine the fate of the whole universe by spiting out Halo Ring to wipe out organic life…
the ark the forunner’s greatest creation… it hold unparalleled secrets an resources that are target by a lot of people.
with the domain up an running again, it would not take long for news of the ark being under assault to reach outlet of Forunners worlds… like Genesis will be get an Red Flagged that would inform UNSC / blue team/ Oiris / Swords… to head to the Ark…
we would get some references about Spartan Vale being on the Ark in the past… even getting the chance to encounter the curtor a.i etc…
SoF crew may get mass upgrade by getting Ancient Humanity Technology… getting an starship along with some mysterious answer to halo 5 armors that are unknown or related to lost past of ancient human…
halo 6 could start off at the Ark too… some other part of the Vast Compound shield like world… fighting against Cortana forces… and the banish… with SoF crew continue to fight on the ark n beyond?

Yes, it is an RTS, but the story is in such a bad position currently that the writing and quality of halo wars 2 could greatly impact the future of the franchise. Given that it was recently revealed that halo wars 2 will have a great impact on halo 6 sort of shows how important this story is for both the future of the campaigns, as well as the future of the player base, given how many people lost faith in the current franchise direction following halo 5s mess of a campaign.
